Subject: Bring Back Vin Garbutt (Please Help) From: GUEST,Rob Henderson Date: 09 Aug 06 - 09:16 AM Ok so heres the story in short..... .... I saw Vin Garbutt play a few weeks back and mentioned I was going to Cambridge Folk Festival. "Oh I haven't played there for ages" was his reply. So being very drunk I thought it would be funny to make a "Bring Back Vin Garbutt" flag for our camp flag pole. The first nights rain brought down the flag :( All it was good for now was a sun screen in the hot sunny days, until my mate dared me to get "WHERE'S VIN?" Henna Tatoo'd on my chest. Drunk as I was, I agreed. Getting the tatoo was the start of a snowball effect. The conversation went... ME: "how mush to get WHERSH VIN on me chesht?" VENDOR: "about £10 mate" ME: "mint" VENDOR: "Why the hell do you want WHERES VIN on your chest?" ME: *explained what I've just explained to you* VENDOR: "EXCELLENT!!! Heres £5 back and can I sign the flag to start a petition to hand in to the festival orgaanisers?" ME: "WAY HEY!! LETSH DO IT" Waking up in the morning I found my self with ELIZA CARTHY's and the MAYOR OF LEWISHAMS signature on my flag along with a more of the last nights less than sobre folk. So back home and thinking it was all becoming a distant memory, how wrong I was. My father got an email today from the MAYOR OF LEWISHAM, who has set up a website with me as campaign leader. http://www.ksco.fsnet.co.uk/BringBackVin/index.htm not only that but our local paper has got hold of the story and is putting the website into the paper. So I'm holding my head up high and going through with what I started (as drunk as I was) I am also asking anyone who supports me in this to please click on the link on the site and tell Cambridge organisers that Vin should be on the bill for next year. :) My 2 year old son is starting to learn some words, as I sing it to him all the time, so I think it would make his next year special too at cambridge :) |

Subject: RE: Bring Back Vin Garbutt (Please Help) From: Betsy Date: 09 Aug 06 - 07:49 PM You're all great people. Incidentally when you next talk to Vin, ask him about the gig where they thought (presumably) a group was going to turn up - Vinegar Butt. Honest it's true!! As for Cambridge, poor souls on this thread, I suspect that you do not know the ridiculous politics which probably have kept one of the best loved performers, serious revivalist and uniquely funniest men in the English language, away from the biggest gathering of Folk in Britain. To elucidate may get me into legal trouble so forgive me. Closed and divided minds in the Cambridge set up , perhaps may not let you have your wish, but I wish you every success in your worthwhile endeavour and I shall go and sign your Clicky - thing. Cheers, Betsy |

Subject: RE: Bring Back Vin Garbutt (Please Help) From: GUEST,Rowan Date: 10 Aug 06 - 12:11 AM Are there any birds at Cambridge? I ask because Vin's an inveterate twitcher. At least he was when in Australia, crossing the Hay plain. That'd surely get him there. |
Subject: RE: Bring Back Vin Garbutt (Please Help) From: GUEST,padgett Date: 10 Aug 06 - 03:56 AM I admire Vin for not only his brilliant whistle playing, his belching is World class and his unique singing style but, ___ He says and sings what he FEELS, that should be what Folk singing is about, not necessarily what the establishment wants to hear Get behind him for Cambridge but Vinn wont change his views, Not everyone agrees with others views, but I will back to the hilt everyones right to say it even if I dont agree [of course there are legal exceptions] nuff sed! Read carefully what Betsy sez coz he is Vin's long time folkie mate!! Ray |

Subject: RE: Bring Back Vin Garbutt (Please Help) From: GUEST,trevor bond Date: 12 Aug 06 - 05:49 PM Is betsy a sudonim for someone from the Teeside/durham /teesvalley airport region. I saw Vin recently and he was fantastic. Agree with Padgett that folk music was always about freedom to express what you think. |
Subject: RE: Bring Back Vin Garbutt (Please Help) From: GUEST,Rob Henderson Date: 14 Aug 06 - 04:47 AM Lol, Matt. Yes, FTW stands for "For The Win" now and not "F**k The World" as it used to incase anyone was wondering. Funny how things change like that. :) |
Subject: RE: Bring Back Vin Garbutt (Please Help) From: nutty Date: 14 Aug 06 - 05:12 AM Betsy is Pete Betts .... long time buddy of Vin (They both hail from South Bank), and accomplished songwriter. |
Subject: RE: Bring Back Vin Garbutt (Please Help) From: GUEST,trevor bond Date: 14 Aug 06 - 05:49 AM Then as he's Pete Betts he must remember the Stork and Castle ,which had two folk clubs a week in the 60's |
Subject: RE: Bring Back Vin Garbutt (Please Help) From: Betsy Date: 14 Aug 06 - 07:36 AM Yes Trev I remember the Stork and Castle and Peter and Nigel(Bond). I'm nursing a bad head from last nights finishing singaround at Saltburn Festival .Vin was on top form at the Festival as per usual. Met Ossonflags and his missus Mary after more than 30 years and shared some wonderful memories of the Hull scen. Plenty of mudcatters at the Fest.including Nutty, and ,Rob Henderson who started this thread. The weather was shite - but the music and song was great , and i am still amazed how the Wilson Family keep up their phenominal workload . Cheers Betsy |
Subject: RE: Bring Back Vin Garbutt (Please Help) From: GUEST,trevor bond Date: 14 Aug 06 - 11:56 AM Good to hear you enjoyed Salburn. Vin was in great form at the Arc. I have only recently started getting back to folk clubs and meeting some of the people from those old days. |

Subject: RE: Bring Back Vin Garbutt (Please Help) From: GUEST,Avro Date: 16 Aug 06 - 07:33 AM The Da VIN Ci code. What are these 'views' that Cambridge doesn't like? I was at Cambridge (the warm cider was deadly!) and missed the Vin flag, sounds like a great idea. |
Subject: RE: Bring Back Vin Garbutt (Please Help) From: GUEST,Rob Henderson Date: 16 Aug 06 - 11:55 AM Apparently from what I can gather, he is to political with his views on abortion, war and other political matters. Since the original organiser died the council has taken over running the folk festival and its fallen victim to PC madness and not booked Vin to play since. * I will make the flag twice as big next year if he's not on the bill Avro. Keep an eye out for it. :) |
Subject: RE: Bring Back Vin Garbutt (Please Help) From: Pete Jennings Date: 16 Aug 06 - 12:58 PM I went to Cambridge for the seventh year running. I was stood there, hardly able to move, with all this diddly-diddly music being played by a variety of unknown/reformed/reconstituted/regurgitated fiddle-based bands and it suddenly came to me: What on Earth am I doing here? Same old thing, year after year, no real representation of what's happening in the real world out on the club circuit (so no Vin, then). I came home and had a great weekend playing some folk songs. Don't think I'll bother going back. Pete |
Subject: RE: Bring Back Vin Garbutt (Please Help) From: GUEST,Ron Henderson Date: 23 Aug 06 - 10:36 AM As much as I love Vins down to earth music, I also love listening to the diddley diddley music too. Maybe not so much on a stage, but I love walking around the tents finding that sect of good musicians really going for it hidden away behind some overflowing portaloo, hmmmm.............or was that Glastonbury? |
Subject: RE: Bring Back Vin Garbutt (Please Help) From: GUEST,Declan Date: 23 Aug 06 - 04:02 PM Nice to see you here Betsy. I sing one of your songs, learned from listening to Mr. Garbutt. They don't write them like that any more. They don't either! I'd love to see Vin back at Cambridge, but if they do away with the fiddles and the diddly diddly, I won't be back. There are many diffrent styles of folk music. I like Cambridge because they cater to many different tastes. You can please some of the people ... |
Subject: RE: Bring Back Vin Garbutt (Please Help) From: Declan Date: 23 Aug 06 - 04:19 PM I seem to remember that VG is (or at least used to be) quite fond of the diddley himself and is quite a good whistle player. I first came across himn at the Lisdoonvarna festival in the 80s. I seem to remeber him saying that his mother came from Co Mayo. |
Subject: RE: Bring Back Vin Garbutt (Please Help) From: Betsy Date: 24 Aug 06 - 03:55 AM Nice to hear from you Declan, Vin's Mam's maiden name is Tess probably Teresa but in all these years I never heard her called anything else ) Kelly. Whether she came from exactly Mayo I can't remember. She is very infirm theses days I think getting on for 95 years. She always used to buy the Universe, an Irish Catholic weekly paper.Apart from owt else, it contained the words of various Irish Songs, which was probably where Vins "folk" curiosity started. His Dad Alf, who has unfortunately passed away , was completely the opposite - English and non-catholic and undoubtedly where Vin gets his sense of humour. What a great couple, and obviously ( as I have seen the results , marvellous parents. Rob Henderson wrote earlier "......his views on abortion, war and other political matters". I support Rob from this angle .. I don't think Vin has rabid views , and I don't agree with some of them, but F*cking Hell !!! what is our folk music without this diversity ? Any how, I don't remember Bob Dylan , Pete Seeger, Donovan, Eric Bogle etc etc. ( I tried to give a good cross section there ) singing and writing about war or political matters. Do You ? well.......perhaps a bit !!!!, hang on, quite a lot actually. There were a lot of closed minds, both forcibly and acquiesced, in Germany in the 1930's, and more recently under Thatcher. Always remember your history, it's amazing how it somehow, returns to bite you on your arse ( English spelling ). Lets forget the "Cambridge" part and call it the Clique Folk Festival. If you think like them - You're IN ,if you don't, then F*ck off, you don't follow our narrow-minded profile of what a top performer constitutes . Cheers, Betsy |
Subject: RE: Bring Back Vin Garbutt (Please Help) From: GUEST,Gerry Date: 27 Aug 06 - 06:20 PM Vin For Cambridge...if he is'nt there next year there will be a contract on the orgaisers. You have been warned!!!! |
Subject: RE: Bring Back Vin Garbutt (Please Help) From: Dartford Warbler Date: 14 Sep 06 - 02:53 PM As a newbie to Mudcat, must say that this is one of the most enjoyable threads I have come across (so far). Have not been to Cambridge since 1980 but still have the glass tankard! (bet they don't have them anymore???) Well done and good luck to you Rob. |
Subject: RE: Bring Back Vin Garbutt (Please Help) From: GUEST,Rob Henderson Date: 19 Sep 06 - 10:24 AM They do as a matter of fact. I have never bought one myself but my father has a cupboard with a few in including this years. What I couldn't get my head around was the fact that 'Health & Safety' made the beer tent stop selling the plastic 4 pint milk jugs full of beer, Yet the council was still allowed to sell these glass tankards which meant people walking back with 4 glasses in there hands instead of a plastic bottle. Safety? Thanks for the reply Dartford and I hope to see you at CAmbridge one year in the future :) |
Subject: RE: Bring Back Vin Garbutt (Please Help) From: GUEST,Rob Henderson Date: 21 Sep 06 - 09:56 AM Ok, I think its about time to print this out and send it to the festivl organisers along with the flag. I'll print it tomorrow, just to give you chance to write anything you wish them to see. If this doesn't work im gonna make a few "BRING BACK VIN" T-shirts and basball caps for us to wear next year and a much bigger flag (I hope it does tho cos Cambridge already stretches my budget a bit :S). |
Subject: RE: Bring Back Vin Garbutt (Please Help) From: GUEST,Tessa Date: 21 Sep 06 - 10:12 AM Is Cambridge FF getting a reputatoin for being very political? I say this because I have heard a few discussions about the festival management and there less than "folky" views on running the festival. Although im not to sure of what happens behind the scene it sounds like censorship is playing a big part in it. Can people not except other peoples point of views anymore? I don't understand why Vin Garbutt wouldn't be able to sing what he wanted to sing. If he was going to cause offense wouldn't people be campaigning to make sure he doesnt play at festivals? Keep up the good work people, I'm glad the majority still have some sense. |
Subject: RE: Bring Back Vin Garbutt (Please Help) From: Tattie Bogle Date: 21 Sep 06 - 07:32 PM I've never been to Cambridge festival, but do go to Sidmouth regularly: can't we have him there? Last time I saw him was in Selkirk, when he nearly caused a few medical emergencies with his description of his own near-death experiences in the care of the NHS! |
Subject: RE: Bring Back Vin Garbutt (Please Help) From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 21 Sep 06 - 08:14 PM Well, having Vin booked would be one good reason for giving Cambridge another go. A good reason for going anywhere for that matter. Whether it'd be a good enough reason in the case of Cambridge I'm not too sure. All big concerts and no real fringe, not what I really look for in a festival. |
Subject: RE: Bring Back Vin Garbutt (Please Help) From: GUEST,Rob Henderson Date: 23 Mar 07 - 02:56 PM I've been jogged into continuing the campaign this year at Cambridge Folk Festival. Looks like it needs a bigger and better Flag this year :) Also in the middle of making a website for it with a better .com name, will post a link to it when its uploaded. :) Anyone planning on fighting for tickets this year? and if so I would love a few Mudcatters signatures on this years flag. :) Looks like I'm gonna have to see this through till the end, lol. (loving it really) |

Subject: RE: Bring Back Vin Garbutt (Please Help) From: Bainbo Date: 24 Mar 07 - 11:01 AM Rob, I salute you. It's a noble campaign. But really, given the apparent mindset at Cambridge FF, youve got to say: "Stuff 'em. It's their loss." (Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't BBC Radio 2 involved with organising the festival now? And hasn't Vin been a regular at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards, either as a nominee, winner, or guest? So how come ... Oh I give up. It's pointless trying to work out how these people think.) |
Subject: RE: Bring Back Vin Garbutt (Please Help) From: Bugsy Date: 24 Mar 07 - 08:49 PM I was at Vin's Concert in Perth Western Australia on Friday and brought up this subject after the show. He was really interested to hear that there was a thread about him on Mudcat, but said that (though he is very humbled by all the efforts made by the fans, he still doesn't think that there's much of a chance of being booked again at Cambridge. To paraphrase his comment, " I really don't think that the people at Cambridge would have any idea who Vin Garbutt is anymore, or the kind of music I do. CHeers Bugsy It was a fantastic show though and good to see that Vin is his old self again. |
Subject: RE: Bring Back Vin Garbutt (Please Help) From: GUEST,Rob Henderson Date: 26 Mar 07 - 08:21 AM Bugsy, Read the first post again, it's not really my campaign. People at Cambridge made me do this when I was drunk, lol. You know the kid in the playground that gets pier pressured by all the other kids to do what they daren't do? Bainbo, Yes you are right, but to the best of my knowledge the council run the fetival since the previous owner died and the way they think is.... ...Council must be Politically correct! ergo Council must not book Vin Garbutt. Which is the kind of mindset that destroys the freedom of folk music to be honest. Please feel free to go to the website on the top post and give a comment to CFF. |
