It's not that I'm precisely blaming the big corporations for everything...

I'm just saying that the party sytem cannot truly represent the general public, given that their primary funding does not come from the general public, it comes from the big business community. Thus, legislation will be crafted in order to meet the needs and desires of the big business community.

The big business community seeks maximum profit. (naturally) Maximum profits are not likely in accord with maximum benefit to the general society. For instance, if there is cheaper labour in China, guess where your jobs are going to go?

The parties are necessarily forced to say one thing (in order to get elected) and do another much of the time. This makes them hypocrites and turns the public into embittered cynics.

None of that is conducive to good government.

Neither is it conducive to a healthy society to divide people up into competing partisan teams and set them against each other. You see the fallout from it constantly on this very forum. It's divisive and destructive.

Greg F. said, "This is what comes of not teaching Rousseau in schools any longer." Which = "If ya can't skate and ya can't stick handle, ya ain't got a team."

Yup... Bobby Rousseau, numero 15, Montréal Canadiens, was one hell of a hockey guy, that guy. He was able to contribute to the team because he learned the fundamentals.

sIx!!! Don't leave. We need to lighten the thing up.

Why, just yesterday, cousin Jimbob sent me an e which was a circular he recieved from a sect of which he is a devout member. It was a Cat'lic Catechism on how to vote. Being a dyed-in-the-wool remote Cat'lic, I read it thoroughly. It talked about abortion and such and how ya should vote based on yer Cat'lic conscience.... con science?

There. That oughta lighten up the discussion.

If the sensible vote is divided Harper wins so we have to vote Liberal to stop him.

Raptor is not the average Canadian voter. You know why? The average Canadian voter is dead. That's right. The average Canadian voter was John Lawrence McCann of Scarborough, Ontario. In his life John voted for the Liberals 15 times, the Progressive Conservatives 6 times, and the New Democrats (or CCF) 3 times. He drank Molson's and rooted for the Leafs half the time and the Canadiens the other half of the time. He went snowshoeing. He owned cars made by Ford, Chrysler, and GM. He married young and had 2 and a half kids. The world he knew is gone, man, gone forever. It was a world of mounties, royal family, lead soldiers, hockey without helmets, and wooden sleds. It was a world where a kid saved up to get a BB gun, not a Playstation. Gum cost a penny or less. You put baseball cards on your bicycle wheels and made catapults out of wooden clothespegs. You had metal animal toys that ran on the floor and shot sparks out of their mouth.

Those were the days when the Conservatives actually were Conservative. Now they are anything but.

Now here's my suggestion: Raptor, you rent a fishing hut. You and Dave the ancient mariner hole up in it for a week or so and fish and talk politics. If you're both still alive after that, we all go out and celebrate at the Chinese buffet.

I'll go and check with her again and get back to ya.

LH ... it was also a time of no seat belts, asbestos insulation, lead based paint, lead based regular gas, (not only where the toy soldiers lead), the woman's place was in the home, everyone smoked, and they smoke just about everywhere, lethal chemicals were dumped anywhere, subtle segregation (yup, also here in Canada too, ever here of Africaville in Nova Scotia, Japanese out in B.C.), rampant poverty in the north, and in the maritimes, our government's mistreatment of it's First Nations back then. All in all things have gotten somewhat better since Mr. Average Canadian voter ... today, unfortuantely we have an 'each person for themselves' evolving attitude.

I personally have no objection to a Tory minority government -- I mean apart from the fact that I would never vote for such a horrible thing -- it would be a chance for them to learn a few things, moderate themselves, or if not, the Canadian people could vote them out in 12 months and we could start again. What I fear is a Tory majority, which would be a catastrophe -- 5 years of these people with no brakes on them, and it is Bush North.

Strategic voting is an inexact science, to say the least.

yours,

Peter T.

Considering that even Harper recognises that the Liberals dominate the Senate and Supreme Court, there are checks and balances in our system to combat any abuse. Even the Governor General is a Liberal appointee. The fact that he is in favour of an elected Senate, and open to more free votes in the house, how can anone accuse the Conservatives of being so dangerous? We need a change and it appears Canadians realise the Conservatives are willing to effect them. If Harper becomes abusive what will happen to him? Total annihilation of his party at the next election.

Nuff said...

Yours, Aye. Dave

sIx. The fifth bead is love. Earth, wind, fire, rain, love. Remember when Bruce Willis kisses the orange-red haired girl and unleashes the power of good just in time to save the universe from being ruled by evil forever? Brucie... you should know that, being an honourary Cat'lic an all.

Dave. An elected Senate? No way. Keep it or abolish it are the only reasonable alternatives. As for the open votes, not worth a tinker's damn. It's a cowardly way out of commitment to doing what is right. Mob rule does not work, even among MsP.

Little Hawk. Hahahaha, cheeky bugger!!! Seems to me that your proposed political system didn't work all that well in the good old USSR. Again, mob rule sucks.

Good thing the election isn't today, with all the power outages around from the wind and ice storms in this end of the country.

Gnu - It didn't work well in the USSR because the USSR was dominated by a friggin' POLITICAL PARTY!!!!!   The one thing worse than either 2 or several poltical parties is just ONE damn political party controlling everything...the Nazis in Germany (after 1933) and the Fascists in Italy being other examples of that nasty procedure in action.

Remember: a political party is an organization, and like all organizations it exists mainly to enlarge and sustain itself...at the cost of what?

No, what I am recommending is a bit more like what they had in ancient Greece in the city of Athens...an assembly of equals who are tied to NO organization, debating issues and deciding them by vote. Like Athens, only...no slaves, and the women get to vote too. (just thought I'd better mention that before some smart guy jumped on it...people love to chew on the details)

You ARE part of the "mob", Gnu. Remember that also. ;-) Don't you trust yourself?

It "failed" because a military genius, Philip of Macedonia, conquered all of Greece, including Athens, and established a military dictatorship. Such is life. Everything has a beginning, a middle, and an end. Philip's son was Alexander, an even greater military genius. He came to an end at age 33, lasting a far shorter time than Athenian democracy.

gnu, I think the more likely scenario, if there is a minority Tory government is that the Liberals will support Harper on a lot of stuff, particularly in lowering corporate tax rates, which the NDP managed to block during the last go around. Might be good for the boys of Bay St., but it doesn't bode well for the average Canadian at all. The Torys won't get much support from the Bloc if they try to dick with any social programmes that negatively affect Quebec.

The political $ySStem is based on moronic behaviour and encourages it at every turn.

We live in a political $ySStem that is ridiculous, insane, and totally fucked, period...although...it COULD be a whole lot worse!

(so we should thank our lucky stars)

Look at it this way. Someday someone else besides the Liberals is bound to win. It will almost surely have to be the Conservatives, right? Who else would it be? We will live through it. If they screw up badly, then they will get pulverized in the next election, as Dave pointed out, and then we will be back to electing Liberals for a lengthy stretch.

Ho Hum.

The sky is not falling yet, Raptor. Face it...someday the Conservatives will win, and Canada will not go up in a puff of smoke and vanish when they do. I can't stand them either, but I'm a realist. They and the Liberals are both a major disappointment, but no one else is going to get elected on a national basis. That's life in Canada.

I'm hearing the young people (30ish) telling the younger people (20ish) to get out and vote because if you don't, you can't complain later when all of a sudden it matters.

A good message and I'm really wondering if the youngsters will determine who wins this election.

Its hard to say. I hope they are smart enough to appreciate Canada as a sovereign nation and that they don't fall prey to rhetoric based on a false economy. I think they are actually very concerned about the environment. That means they will probably vote NDP or Green. I hope so.

If so, we will have a minority government. I hope its a minority Liberal government rather than a minority Conservative government. We will soon know.
