Subject: RE: BS: Bobert Under the Knife March 14th... From: Rapparee Date: 16 Mar 12 - 10:51 AM I'm going to send the P-vine a big mallet to use to help you sleep. Of COURSE you woke up in the night! Geez, dude, you had a guy doing some serious cuttin' on ya. You got this body, right? It's gotta heal in it's own way, and waking you up is just its way of asking, "Hey, are they through yet? 'Cause I'm gittin' plumb tired of being whittled on and rearranged." Woke up this mornin' it was too damned early, Posted to Mudcat, tried to git back to sleep Dropped some more meds, couldn't find 'em on the floor Surgery sucks, they treat you like meat. |
Subject: RE: BS: Bobert Under the Knife March 14th... From: Bettynh Date: 16 Mar 12 - 02:25 PM Dammit, Bobert, I said it on the other thread and I'll say it again. THROW AWAY THE TYLENOL. You're already taking it in the stuff the doc prescribed. It's very easy to OD on, and it'll damage your liver. Get some Motrin (ibuprofen) or Naprosyn (naproxen) or even aspirin, but NO TYLENOL. |
Subject: RE: BS: Bobert Under the Knife March 14th... From: Bobert Date: 16 Mar 12 - 05:26 PM okay!!! But the doc said to use it between doses of the perscription stuff??? What gives... B~ |
Subject: RE: BS: Bobert Under the Knife March 14th... From: Bettynh Date: 16 Mar 12 - 05:39 PM Yep, it was the NURSES and PHARMACISTS that kept track of the daily dose when I was working an orthopedic ward. More is better with the narcs, but not the tylenol. If you develop liver failure he won't see the connection, either. He'll hand you off to an internal med guy and blame you for drinking too much. Try asking - you'll likely have dead air, then agreement that Motrin would be ok, too. |

Subject: RE: BS: Bobert Under the Knife March 14th... From: Rapparee Date: 16 Mar 12 - 10:11 PM You CAN OD on Tylenol (acetaminophen). You can also OD on ibuprofen (7,000mg will do it) -- trust me on that, my wife has had ibu poisoning). You gotta WATCH WHAT YOU TAKE!! Now, about the pain. Go get a rubber bone (gotta be rubber). Put it between your teeth and let the P-vine take a belt sander to your leg (extra-coarse grit). It'll feel sooooooooooo good when she stops.... In the meantime, read Corinthians III: The Way Named Straight, Tarsus, Province of Syria. My Dear Corinthians: I, Paul, by the will of God an unworthy apostle, again write you in fellowship and with a good will. I must once again remonstrate with you, and must tell you again in no uncertain terms to shape up! Don't make me come over there, you hear? You'll be sorry if you do! By the way, I've written to you twice -- don't you know it's very rude not to reply to letters? Sincerely yours, Paul. |

Subject: RE: BS: Bobert Under the Knife March 14th... From: LilyFestre Date: 16 Mar 12 - 11:01 PM Bobert, Being awake and in pain sucks...especially during the night. Does anything give you relief? A certain position maybe? Put on some music that relaxes you, grab a book or do something that interests you. On those many long nights when I had pain from my chemo, I spent time making montages online. It was fun and in the end I had something neat to show for it. Or sit and cry. I did plenty of that too. I don't know if you are a praying kind of guy but there were many, many nights when I couldn't sleep so God and I would chat and eventually I would drift off. And I slept better alone during that time. I love my husband but I needed to have room to thrash around, toss and turn and be miserable if need be. He was a good egg and didn't take it personally....maybe that might help. We are all so different. Know that you're in my thoughts and prayers. And you know what else helps me sleep? Vicks Vapor Rub. True story. Love you friend. This too shall pass. XOXOXOOX Michelle |

Normal pattern 2 hours sleep, a bit of prowling about, 2 to 3 hours sleep then a bit of prowling about, then 3 or 4 hours nice restful sleep that has to be ended to start the day only a little late. I usually get longer better sleep of I go out to the caravan, next best is the biggest sofa, and least wonderful any of the 5 bedrooms in my house (but at least the best of them is mine)! |

Subject: RE: BS: Bobert Under the Knife March 14th... From: ChanteyLass Date: 18 Mar 12 - 12:56 PM It's a spiral. Lack of sleep causes pain to feel worse. Pain causes lack of sleep. Meds may be affecting your normal sleep pattern. That's something else to discuss with your doc--or maybe a nurse practitioner if one works with your doc. NPs are sometimes better listeners and if one has worked with several docs, an NP may be less locked into one way of medicating patients. I think some docs get into a rut of prescribing the same thing, while and NP may have seen a variety of doctors try different things. I'm hoping for less pain and more sleep for you, starting now! |
Subject: RE: BS: Bobert Under the Knife March 14th... From: Big Al Whittle Date: 18 Mar 12 - 07:35 PM Sorry it hurts Bob. Have they tried you with Oromorph - morphine based? I get on with Tramadol - those some people say it sends them tripping, The strongest, I ever took was for tri geminal neuralgia - that was callled Kapaki It stopped the pain, but I had to stop gigging as it emptied my mind of the lyrics of songs that I'd been singing every night for years. The point is, you need an effective painkiller to sleep, and you need to sleep and relax - just to mend and stabilise your condition - temp, blood pressure, etc. Best wishes to you - I hope you're soon back up there on the sidewalk. |

Subject: RE: BS: Bobert Under the Knife March 14th... From: Bill D Date: 19 Mar 12 - 12:29 PM Sleep.. Bobert... I got a small prescription for Ambien. I actually cut them in 4 pieces and take 1/4 if I wake up...or to get off to sleep. If that seems not to work after 1/2 hr. or so, I take a 2nd 1/4 piece. It works 'pretty fast'. I am not sure how it reacts with pain meds. |
Subject: RE: BS: Bobert Under the Knife March 14th... From: gnu Date: 19 Mar 12 - 02:30 PM Bobert... part of not "being able" to sleep on your back is your mind telling you that you can't. You can. I had to learn to do it so I started off by propping myself up a bit and I had to experiment to get the right angle. Same thing with teaching myself to lie FLAT face down with head turned and with my arms fully extended by my sides... THAT was very difficult but it had to be done to stop the carpal and cubital tunnel problems in both arms which occured during my weight loss (I lost about 80 pounds of fat and 20 pounds of muscle so that when I curled my arms up while sleeping it stressed the nerves). I know that's TMI but it demonstrates that it can be done. Ya know, I just had a thought... unfortunate you were not warned long ago to practice different sleeping positions before the op. Mention it to the doc. Such a suggestion may help others in future. Once again, bud, I hope you heal fast and well and get some sleep. Ya gonna talk to the nurse or doc about the meds? Is the pain subsiding at all? I'd love to see a pic of that riggin-friggin. |
