I'm one of Divis's customers as well. I think it was a good film in that it was partisan without being uncritical of the IRA. There was no doubt who the director was rooting for, but some of the criticisms aimed at the rebel hero were quite unanswerable - and there weren't any glib answers offered. So in my opinion, a serious film. |

Limited showings--one theater in Manhattan, one in Westchester Co., one in Queens, and I think one in northern NJ. Another point, I read somewhere a few years ago that many if not most of the Blacks & Tans were Irish Catholic soldiers who had been discharged from the British Army and were offered this new opportunity at employment back in Ireland. I cant remember the name of the book that had this information but it was pretty well received when it was published. Anyone have any information on this point? |

She rode her 2 wheeler to bring news from one group of IRA men to another. She was stopped one day, searched and finding nothing the b.& ts. taunted her with anti-Papist remarks and pulled the chain & crucifix from her neck. This was in West Cork. My Dad, from Monaghan, told of being in a pub which was run by a man and his 16 year old daughter. Suddenly, 3 or 4 tans came in and rousted the locals and eyed the lovely girl. They insisted she have a drink-she refused as her Dad explained she was too young. These bastards lifted her up and placed her flat on the bar & poured whiskey, from a bottle, down her throat. When she became sick they poured the rest over her body. They were, of course, armed & the few locals who were present dared not intervene. A truly terrible time. |

Just read the Irish Echo Newspaper. There is going to be a movie bio. of James Connolly-the workingman's hero. He was my Father's hero too. One of the best trips my late husband & I had was around "83. We took my Dad back to Eire-he had left there 60 years before. We covered alot - but for him the most touching was a courtyard in Kilmainham jail where Connolly was tied to a chair & executed. He was unable to stand because the beatings he endured broke his leg. Of course many others met their fate in that place. I put Kilmainham & Gettysburg as the most reverential sites I've seen. |

His injuries were so severe that he had to be tied to a chair, in order to be executed. Connolly, IMO, is probably the key figure in the Rising. Were it not for his bringing his Citizens Army to bear, the Rising likely wouldn't have come off. He is a personal hero of mine. I have a number of books and collections by and about him. Many folks might not realize, but Connolly wrote a whole pamphlet of song lyrics. He was a Union Organizer, a lyricist, and a Socialist. He organized for the Industrial Workers of the World (the IWW, or Wobblies) in Scotland and in the United States. For a list of his archived works, and links to many of them, GO HERE. In my opinion both him and Padraig Pearce were the key figures in the Rising, although without Connolly's committment to action it's possible the Rising might never have happened. However, without Pearce issuing the declaration from the steps of the GPO the significance of the Rising would have not been the same. I agree though Mick, Connolly was a man of the people and a committed socialist and his prime concern was the rights of workers - a fact often overlooked by people who see him just as a truculent Irish Nationalist. |

It was so emotional that it is the only movie I have ever seen where nobody in the audience spoke or made any noise during the movie or even when it was over. We all just walked out of the cinema in complete silence. It was an eerie feeling. My mother had some stories about the Tans, especially about them throwing a grenade into a group of children playing" ring -arounf-a - rosie''. She had a photograph of the blackened street. I believe my older brother still has the photo. I heard a few reasons as the why wore the unusual uniform 1 - so they would not be confused with either the police or the regular army. and 2 - nNt enough complete uniforms to go around so they had to use part of the army uniform and part of the police uniform. They were bad days indeed. |
