I hope that's fairly accurate. I had to scan it and print 2x to read any of it - old eyes ain't what they used to be. (If you copy and paste, change to monospaced font like Courier to keep spacing.) Key signature A major (3#). 3/4 time of course. John |

Subject: RE: Chord Req: My Favorite Things From: Tunesmith Date: 09 May 07 - 04:00 PM I've never liked this song, and that's down to Julie Andrews' very "proper" singing voice. Come to think of it, I can't recall hearing it performed by any other well-known artist; however, it has a great tune and well crafted words. I would have liked to hear Johnny Cash sing it! |
Subject: RE: Chord Req: My Favorite Things From: PoppaGator Date: 09 May 07 - 05:31 PM Nice example of manual dyslexia from JohnInKansas. I trust it didn't pass unnoticed. Tunesmith, there is a VERY well-known, and very excellent, jazz instrumental recording of this song by one John Coltrane. It's the title cut of a famously classic album. I wouldn't imagine that the average Brit folkie would dig (i.e.,enjoy and understand) the extended improvisatory post-bop modern-jazz passages, but the eloquent manner in which 'Trane "states" the basic melody to begin and end the piece should be accessible to any musician's ear, and might well suggest an alternative way to approach singing this old chestnut. If some record-selling website provides a brief MP3 snippet of the opening passage of this piece, you might find it interesting. All you need is the first repetition or two of the verse (30-40 seconds should be plenty); the rest of the cut would not be immediately relevant to your needs and interests anyway. |
Subject: RE: Chord Req: My Favorite Things From: Tunesmith Date: 10 May 07 - 05:35 AM PoppaGator: I do know the John Coltrane tune; infact, I'm learning the sax at the moment. I really can't get into Trane, though. His "lapses" into bad taste ( e.g. making strange noises that don't seem to add anything to the tune) bother me. I love earlier players, especially Lester Young and Charlie Parker |
Subject: RE: Chord Req: My Favorite Things From: Brían Date: 10 May 07 - 07:43 AM A stellar video of John Coletrane performing My Favorite Things can be found on Youtube. I rather enjoy 'Trane's "lapses", although I wonder if you are confusing John's playing with Pharoh Sanders, who specialized in producing overtones in his playing. |
Subject: RE: Chord Req: My Favorite Things From: keberoxu Date: 11 Jan 18 - 12:15 PM Is it a big jump to move from John Coltrane to Betty Carter? Here she is live, with her trio. WARNING: scat singing in between choruses. I think it's brilliant but it may not be to everyone's taste. Betty Carter "My Favourite Things" live |
