OK, given the wide-ranging topics Mudcat discusses, I can see where the spammers might think we had an interest in their products. BUT WHY do they think we have any money for it?

We ARE folkies, after all: One would think they would be able to figure this out!

'thinking' has little to do with posting spam. Obviously, they never look to see if it has been seen or not.

I suspect that they do searches for words, and if one appears in a forum which allows posting, they slam in a C & P and go away.

Nope. The term is "cut and paste," even if you happen to be doing a copy and paste. That's just what it's called. (And of course, even if you cut once, you paste many times. . . )

What we need to realize here, folks, is that it is we, in our insulated, narrow little world of folkie stuff, who are in the wrong.

If we would only each BUY one of their tablet bottles of Viagara, SUBSCRIBE to their tit-of-the-hour clubs, PAY for their precious access to Bestialty's Best, and order ALL our medicines from them, THEN they would leave us alone.

I am counting on you!!

being a philosophical, pedantic purist, *I* like to call 'em likes I sees 'em, and iff'n you don't make the original source disappear, it's COPY & paste. I sometimes do CUT & paste when composing, but....

and that's why I shorten it to C&P, so's ya'll can read it any which way. Ain't I a good guy?

The original does frequently disappear. Sometimes when I don't want it to. I actually do more cut and paste because otherwise I end up with the same thing in a couple of places in the document, if I missed getting rid of the first occurrence.

Well, Phbttttttttttttttt.   Only when you are making up the terms. ;)

I refer you to How To Copy and Paste at webmasternow.com and also this article at the highly acclaimed Wikipedia site which makes the distinction between the two. You cannot cut from a document to which you cannot make changes, such as a message board. You can only copy.

In my early computer days, which were also my early Mudcat days, the reason I was having trouble with the Blue Clicky Page here was because of the step that says "cut and paste this into your post:". I found I wasn't offered the option of cutting, so that stumped me for a while. When I finally found I could COPY and paste, I came to the conclusion that they made a mistake saying 'cut and paste'.

It all seems quite obvious now, but to a complete newbie, such things can be confusing. All I can say is - if the term for both actions is 'cut and paste', it shouldn't be.

It's a confusion of historic terms.

When all editing for magazines took place on paper hard copy - before computers (I am that old!) - if you wanted to remove something - you cut it out with scissors or a sharp blade.

If you wanted to have copies of something inserted in a "paste-up" original paper document which was then used as the original image in a photolith printing process - you cut out new copies from duplicate pages and then pasted them in where needed.

What's all this about 'tit-of-the-hour' clubs? If you want to see tits, I have three sorts here. I don't charge the extortionate rates that those sites do, so for just a bar of chocolate or a bottle of something drinkable, you can come and see great tits, blue tits and occasionally a coal tit. At the moment, a great one is hanging upside down from the feeder whilst her mate is wiping it's beak on a branch.

I've installed 'state of the ark' viewing facilities and as soon as I've got the horse manure off the table and onto the garden, there'll be somewhere to rest your glasses.

I work in print and web media, and have always used keystrokes over drop down menus. Control X and Control C are cut and copy. Control V is paste. I do a lot of editing on documents that can and must be changed. Over the years in the different venues where I work, what I do was and is still is called cut and paste, regardless of the number of folks who only do copy and paste in their particular media.

I'll spare you my lecture on the hazards of citing Wikipedia as an authoritative source.

Don't apologise... just get it where you can!

As I trained as a typist (i.e., I use 9 digits instead of 2), it is quicker for me to type a n d, but 'ampersand' is just as easy... Using the actual ampersand (the squiggly '&' thingy) makes no difference, the speed I type at. I'm one of the few people in my office who can actually write it with a pen.

Many years ago, when I became offended at the odd "abbreviated forms" people used as replacements for the &, I decided to look it up and found that that particular symbol was at that time traced back to pre-biblical Egyptian/Arabic glyphs.

As numerous things, such as the invention of the typewriter, the sewing machine, the helicopter, and recyclable paper - and the rise of the internet, have intervened since I learned to write one in script, it's quite likely that history also has changed and different origins may be found now.

Actually, Geoff, you'll find it's "hamper sand", so-called because it was derived from the use of sand kept in a small wicker receptacle, which was frequently misplaced. It was required when there was an unsightly blot, as a form of early blotting paper. Obviously when everyone tried to write this new-fangled shorthand thingy it was much in demand in the scriptorium. Hence the cry was frequently heard, in tones of urgency, " 'Ampersand! 'Ampersand!", which became attached to the symbol itself.

'When creating a new typeface, a designer can inject the most artistic flair into the ampersand character. The term ampersand, as Geoffrey Glaister writes in his "Glossary of the Book," is a corruption of and (&) per se and, which literally means "(the character) & by itself (is the word) and." The symbol & is derived from the ligature of ET or et, which is the Latin word for "and."'

more from this page

Like many letters in our current alphabet, the ampersand probably began as a convenience. The Latin word et (meaning "and") was first written as two distinct letters, but over time the 'e' and 't' were combined into a ligature of sorts. Once the ampersand was accepted as a single character, artistry took over and a more flowing design evolved. Credit for the invention of the ampersand is usually given to Marcus Tiro, who included it in a shorthand writing system he devised in 63 B.C.

By the time Charlemagne's scribes developed the Carolingian minuscule in about 775 A.D., the "et" ligature had become a standard part of their repertoire. It remained so all the way until the invention of printing in the 15th century, when the ampersand was adopted, with enthusiasm, by the first typographers. For example, Francesco Colonna's Hypnerotomachia Poliphili, printed by Aldus Manutius in 1499, used twenty-five ampersands on a single page. Why such liberal use of the ampersand? Early printers wanted to keep their work in the tradition of hand-illuminated manuscripts. And, like us, they considered the ampersand a particularly beautiful character and enjoyed using it for its aesthetic merit.

The word "ampersand" is an alteration of the phrase "et, per se and" (that is: "et by itself [means] and"), which became corrupted to "and, per se and", and finally, ampersand.

Manuscripts also had other 'shortcuts' - one of which has been corrupted into the "Ye" used in such phrases as "Ye Olde Sweete Shoppe" - which is a corruption of the extant language anyway.

"Ye" evolved from the Thorn, an elaborate "T" that was no doubt done in by the printing press.

"Recognition of some words is naturally hindered by the presence of two special characters, þ, called "thorn," and ð, called "edh," which served in Old English to represent the sounds now spelled with th."

Note that there was never any distinction made between the two th sounds that English presently carries in that both were represented by either the ð or the þ. (One can feel the difference by putting the hand about a half inch from the mouth then saying the words thin and there.)
