I have just obtained a copy of Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson. It is complete and not in bad shape. I can't find a publishing date. 1st and 2nd pages are blank. The first page with writting says Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson has a picture of a lantern, then it has a quote "With the wind of God in her vesture, proclaiming the deathless, ever-soaring spirit of man." Locke.
At the bottom is says The Goldsmith Publishing Company, Chicago Ill. Made in U.S.A. Plus a copy of their logo at the bottom. How old? Or how do I find out?

Thanks!!!!

There seems to be an active trade in books from this publisher. Try the reference or the rare book section of the nearest big library. Lacking that, antiquarian booksellers are often delighted to help with questions like this.

3refs. (great handle)
Sorry to tell you but "Goldsmith" is a republishing company. Your book in value is about 25 cents.
Go to tis site: http://www.addall.com/Used/AddUsed.html
At the bottom type in the Author, title, and publishing company.

This should help. Have fun and good reading.

Who cares about the value? I care about the Words Within!!!
First Edition? Bah. Same words. Same story. Gimme the story every time.

Hay Sorcha! What's bothering you tonight? All 3refs is asking for is a little information. Maybe he/she doesn't want to read the book. maybe just to see if it has a value. Is there something wrong in his inquiry?

Oh, no. Sorry. Didn't mean it to come out that way. Sorry, 3refs.

Sorch, (who comes without references, smile)

Not that it matters to Sorcha, but "Treasure Island" was first published in 1883, Cassell and Company, London. A fine copy will set you back about $10,000.
A 1911 edition illustrated by N. C. Wyeth is about $600, and the Oxford Press edition with Rowland Hilder illustrations about $500.

First - please READ the book - it is a delight and in my top 10 "all-time" list.

Use: http://www.abebooks.com for comparison pricing - and binding and illustrations and publisher.

Sincerely,

Thanks for the info. Read the book several times. It's just that this is obviously an old book and I was wondering about it. Having no publishing date kind of threw me.

Thanks Again

3refs, I think my first copy was a Goldsmith, or similar. Lost long ago. I also remember from childhood "The Gold Bug," by Poe, a short story that first came out in 1843. Both caught me firmly and I have re-read both several times.

It's one of my favorites too, but then again, I loved Moby Dick too.

I'll never forget listening to my Grandma reading "Treasure Island " to my cousins and brother one summer long ago. She was recovering from a slight stroke and could only sit out in the garden that season, and it seemed to have been a warm , bee and wasp filled one.
The story thrilled us as I know it still can thrill youngsters. I read it for my own kids a fedw years ago also and anytime they see or hear of it on TV they say how they recall the story of "Young Áwrkins" but the character who seems to have delighted my son most is ...Ben Gunne (A tribute, no doubt, to my acting skills)
