Subject: Lyr Add: THE GRANDFATHER'S CLOCK (George Formby) From: masato sakurai Date: 24 Oct 07 - 11:50 AM Of course, George Formby Sr rewrote it. His "My Grandfather's Clock" (mp3, noises included) is at George Formby Senior recordings. The lyrics are here. THE GRANDFATHER'S CLOCK (Geoge Formby, Sr.) This is a song about me grandfather. And them that doesn't want to listen, Get out o't'room, please, Because it's only annoyance to me. Get in lads! My Grandfather's Clock was a Waterbury Watch, It could live 90 days without food. With a silk 'at on its 'ead and me father's McIntosh, It was dressed up like a Picadilly Dude. It was kept in the hall, 'Till the cup-board got The Small, And we 'ad no place the food for to stock. So the butter and the heggs, And the little mutton legs We kept them in me Grandfather's Clock. And the works of the clock, Through the butter meltin' in it, Sent the fingers flyin' round, At a 'undred miles a minute, And Grandad, with a sigh, said "I haven't time to die, So I'll put it off until the clock's repaired." Aye 'twas about the best thing he could to do, you know. Very sensible man was me Granfather. He al's undressed hisself before 'ee got into bed. My Grandfather's Clock was me Mother's P'rambulator, 'Round the park in it we used to ride. There was me, and Treacle Tummy, Liza Ant, and Justice 'Awkins, Screamin' "Jimmy," and the twins all stuck inside. So Grandad, 'oo was dead, Changed his mind, got up instead, And the sight that he saw give 'im a shock, For the man 'oo brought the coal, Couldn't get it down the 'ole, So, 'ee slung it in me Grandfather's Clock. And we didn't need a shovel, As the pendulum swung 'igher. For ev'ry time it swung, It knocked some coal into the fire! And at nine o'clock, the crank, used to Chime a Dubble Blank, So Grandad had to knock 'ee wouldn't go! |

Subject: RE: Grandfather's Clock, another version From: Mr Happy Date: 24 Oct 07 - 12:18 PM topical tom, You may find your 'unprintable' version in the DT! |
Subject: RE: Grandfather's Clock, another version From: topical tom Date: 24 Oct 07 - 12:43 PM No, Mr Happy, not even in the DT! I think that it could be a parody invented by college students since that's where I first heard it and sang it(sad to say!) |

Subject: RE: Grandfather's Clock, another version From: Joe Offer Date: 24 Oct 07 - 02:17 PM Our original Digital Tradition search engine worked differently. No matter how you tried to find "My Grandfather's Clock," you ended up with My Grandfather's Cock and then had to go through that parody to get to the original song. At least once every six months, I'd get an irate e-mail from some woman who was trying to teach her children the "Clock" song, only to happen upon the bawdy parody. I don't know how many times I had ot explain that folk music ain't always pretty. That being said, I think we really need to see the lyrics to topical tom's version. Please???? -Joe- |

Subject: Lyr Add: THE GRANDFATHER'S CLOCK (G Formby, Sr) From: Will Fly Date: 04 Sep 08 - 07:08 AM This is a parody of "My Grandfather's Clock", written and performed by musical hall artist George Formby Senior. THE GRANDFATHER'S CLOCK (Parody written and performed by George Formby Senior) [Spoken intro] This is a song about me grandfather, and them that doesn't want to listen, get out o't room – please – 'cos it's only annoyance to me. Nah then, lads… [Sung] My grandfather's clock was a waterbelly watch, It could live ninety days without food. With a silk hat on its head and me father's meckuntosh (mackintosh), It was dressed up like a Piccadilly dude. It was kept in the hall 'til the cup-board got ter small, And we had no place the food for to stock. So the butter and the heggs and the little mutton legs, We kept them in me grandfather's clock. And the works of the clock, through the butter melting in it, Sent the fingers flying round at a hundred miles a minute. And granddad, with a sigh, said, "I haven't time to die, So I'll put it off until the clock's repaired". [Spoken interlude] Aye, it was about 't best thing as he could do, d'you know. Very sensible man, was me grandfather. He allus undressed his self before he got into bed… [Sung] My grandfather's clock was me mother's p'ramberlator, Round the park in it we used to ride. There was me and Treacle Tommy, Liza Ann and Justice Hawkins, Screaming Jimmy and the twins all stuck inside. So, granddad – who was dead – changed his mind, got up instead, And the sight that he saw gave him a shock. For the man who brought the coal couldn't get it down the hole, So he slung it in me grandfather's clock. And we didn't need a shovel as the pend'lum swung higher, For every time it swung, it knocked some coal into the fire, And at nine o'clock the crank, used to chime a double blank, So granddad had to knock – he couldn't go. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: The Grandfather's Clock From: Mr Happy Date: 04 Sep 08 - 07:32 AM http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=0nRXL0qlO3s That turntable's awful creaky!! |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: The Grandfather's Clock From: Will Fly Date: 04 Sep 08 - 07:41 AM Cheers, Mr. H. Interesting comments on YouTube. It may not be the turntable that's creating the up-and down pitch, but the wonky record, which has warped over the years. Difficult to tell. Someone also refers to the 78rpm record as a "transfer"... |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: The Grandfather's Clock (G Formby, Sr.) From: GUEST,EOB Date: 14 Oct 12 - 07:15 AM I believe it was a "Waterbury" watch, after the Waterbury (CT) Clock Company, one of the first companies to mass produce clocks and watches. Ultimately, it turned into what is now Timex. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: The Grandfather's Clock (G Formby, Sr.) From: Will Fly Date: 14 Oct 12 - 07:43 AM Yes - Formby is referring to a Waterbury watch, but parodying it as a "waterbelly" watch. :-) |
