LEJ...when Alison of Australia asks nicely, YOU would pose holding a harmonica strategically placed.

But I suppose I wouldn't really do justice to the coat the way Kendall does, anyway. Besides, I LIKE what autoharps attract.

This just sprung to my mind unbidden as it were, and I have absolutely no idea why !

"Now, I cast me mind back thru the ages
To the days of that horny old Celt
With his wife lyin' by on the bed, Sir,
As he stood by the fire in his pelt

And I thought that I heard Brian whisper
As he stood in the fire's rosy light
"Well, you've had yer own way long enough, dear...
'Tis the hairy side outside, tonight."

Pelt eh?

Bill

Is it true that you posed au naturel for the first Mudcat Calendar? Holding an autoharp, strategically placed? I'm surprised a man with that reputation would have time for the additional attention a Kendall Coat would engender.

Kendall...what you & Jacqui did was lovely and worth hearing, even with your limits. I could understand every word....and I was surprised I could!

....and fer Pete's sake! You are part of it all because you are a friend to a whole bunch of folks...not just because you do or don't perform! As the voice improves, we'll start critiquing THAT again...*grin*

By the way...can I borrow that coat? I do like the effect it has.

I had reservations about coming to the Getaway because I can't contribute. I say this in all honesty, I really am a shy person, and what I was feeling from the gang was love and acceptance in spite of my handicap.
My most heart felt thanks to all who made me feel at home.

Well, I was pleased to pick up a copy o Elizabeth LaPerelle's most recent CD Lizard In The Spring", yup, that was a highlight in it's self. The most enjoyable time I had was singing with Ken Shatz, espically during the concert when we did "Ol Dollar Mammy" a prison worksong. Amos's rendition of Richard Thomson's "Vincent 52" was great, would've had RT green with envy. It was so nice to see & hear so many West/Left Coasters this yr. Loni, Amos, Joe, got to meet & hear Claire who should've meet & sang 25 yrs ago & espically Slyvia who I did know & sing with 25yrs ago, she's always a joy to see & hear, as many found out. It seemed that quite a few new singers were getting their feet wet which is great to hear & the amount of fine musicians & singers is always staggering & surprizing when you (or me anyway) think that it can't get better & it does, excepting for the food, maybe but I for one wasn't expecting much on that front anyway & from the pictures I've seen I can stand to lose the weight.
It was a bit thin with Mudcatter's (wimps, all of ya) but it was no worst because of it, for sure, the Maryland crowd is most welcoming & talented that the missing were not lost as their spirits were there with the rest of us. Fancy, Nancy King with a now 3rd generation of cuties attending , Nancy you're one lucky doll with that troop of yours. I don't know why Kendall, with hardly a voice, had such strong reservations about going? Kendall, the rest of us mere mortals come in both arms dragging in whatever it is we're armed to the teeth with & all vocals greased & lubed & you walk in with a coat & no matter what the rest of us did from that moment on it was all for not, we couldn't get the attention of a hungry flea & you get both sexes pawing you from head to toe. Where'd you say you got that jacket, I think I'll be needing one myself or maybe it's just the way you wear it.
Anyway it was a great time & the only thing I'll do different is come a day sooner & stay a day or 2 later & ring some extra morsals to nibble on.
Thanks to Charlie, Carly, Rita, Dennis, Nancy & all you others that helped make the Getaway such a sucess.
Barry

It was wonderful! Thanks to the putter-onners (how would one spell that correctly, I wonder?) and to those -- you know who you are -- who made such an indelible and wonderful impression on my spirit this weekend.

Being Jacqui's dragon was terrific fun, though I expired prematurely and then had to deliver my lines from a reclining position. I claim this was Micca's fault, as he had advised me to play it as though I'd just had 12 pints at the pub.

I'll be home next week and will start PMing my new pals like mad. In the meantime, hello to everyone -- hope you all got safely home with memories at least half as grand as mine!

The brain is slightly more into gear now. I want to say thank you to the brave souls who took part in the Mummers play. Cast as follows:-

St George          - Maria Fakhoury
The Dragon         - Claire Norman
Turkish Knight    - Micca Patterson
Doctor             - Dennis Cook
The Fool          - Kathy DeWalt
Egyptian Princess - Deborah Coward
Old Woman          - Jacqui Morse

This was something that I had wanted to do for a couple of years and it was so good to have a group of people who put so much fun into it. Thank you all.

Well, even though I will miss this year's video, I appreciate ALL the photos posted. I think it may be a new record for numbers of pix so quickly.

And once again, it looks like a fine time was had by all (except for the occasional illneses here and there). Every year I swear we're coming and every year brings on a fresh "disaster" that either takes our time or our money or, like this year, most of both.

And BILL D.----If any of the shots from Columbus came out, can you send me copies in whatever format? I have another thing too, so I'm sending a PM anyway.

GREAT PIX FOLKS!!! THANKS!!!!

I'd love to write something here but I'd have to write for at least half an hour to mention all the moments that stand out in my mind. Kendall and Jacqui doing Phoebe Snow. Darriel's photo of Kendall in The Jacket and The Hat, sitting on a bench by the river. Janie's song in the Songs from the Hills workshop, in fact anything Janie sang that I got to hear. The Saturday jam in the dining hall, featuring Amos, Lonesome EJ, Keith Baldwin (who came all the way from Oregon) and Carl-whose-last-name-I-dont-know, among others.

Edmund's version of Danny Deever, and Charmion's version of The D-Day Dodgers. Every moment of the mummer's play, but especially Dennis and Micca's heated exchange of insults (ad-libbed, apparently).

Sunday late-night singing was some of the best. I got to sing two old favorites with David on harp and Ron on viola. One of them, Starlight on the Rails, was a request from Ron that I hadn't sung in years but it used to be a Getaway standard for a few of us, back when we were at Camp Letts.

Later, back at the Retreat Center, I ended up staying up until 3 for some mostly unaccompanied singing. Highlights: Lisa Null singing almost anything, Penny Anderson lining out and singing a Primitive Baptist hymn with several of us joining in -- quite an experience, it's a beautiful and difficult singing style and Penny was so-o-o-o good at it -- followed by John Roberts singing "Just a Picture from Life's Other Side" with banjo accompaniment to keep up the American Trad mood.

BTW Darriel's photos are great but as Bill says, we aren't likely to get them before Thanksgiving. Sigh....

After having eaten the food last year I decided the safest way was to opt out of the food this time and take care of myself via sandwiches and bits and pieces (the bts and pieces were particularly delicious....). Not to whine -- and I know it is hard to feed large numbers of people but from what I heard, the food was even worse this year which is hard to imagine.

Wonderful weekend...thanks to all who arranged it.

The eclectic mix of music and interests that are represented at the Getaway is such an opportunity for dillitantes like me to listen, learn and enjoy. It is so much fun when the mixing and matching of the different branches start up in the jams and song circles, and the common root begins to emerge.

The atmosphere of acceptance, encouragement, support and respect for what each person brings to share musically is the hallmark of this wonderful event. It not just a celebration of folk music. It is a celebration of the music in every person, and an invitation to each person to allow the music in each of us to find it's way into the world.

Oh, and Amos does have a brand new Tilley hat, the exact model as last year, only nice and shiny and new. He did not, however, drop it into the waters of West River to see if it really does float....nor his guitar either.

Thanks Bill, there are some fine moments captured there...

I too sat for my turn with Kirn ... his proud Dad snapped photos with several of us enjoying time with the bright and beautiful young man. Dan's promised to post the beginnings of Kirn's Grand Mudcat Introduction....

Laughter, Hugs and Stories seem to drift to mind over and over again.

Dennis Cook (DR) and Micca (Turkish Knight) adlibing through the mummer's play.
Maria explaining the "Ladies of the Club" number to her mother while Judy Cook and I managed to look sheepish (and proud) all at the same time.

And the to be unnamed confessor who admitted to me that they thought Hannah Johnson was really just selling a mule...

Oh and people complaining about the heat... Now that was a novel Getaway experience.

I'm ready to go back....

Thanks for straightening out my memory cells on the Kamlyk (that was the word I was trying to remember) music Gordon presented. What was amazing was to hear the voice I had learned to identify with schooners and the Down East world suddenly intoning this guttural klezmer-like semi-tonal music with what seemed (to my uneducated ears) as impeccable intonation. Had me goin' some. It was deeply touching in an unexpected way.

Jacqui, I'll email you the phtos with Gordon.

Hmmm...where to begin? Kendall's coat has been mentioned, but the look on his face when George Stephens rubbed his coat was priceless! Gordon's workshop on the Kalmyk people and their music was fascinating, Chance threatening to smother a snoring Micca with a pillow at 7:30 AM, meeting Clairebear, Charlie Baum teleporting from place to place and Linda Goodman being everywhere at once making sure there was edible food in the retreat center at all times, and seeing all the wonderful people that I only get to see once or twice a year. Sitting with a table full of people all singing along with Amos when he did Vincent Black Lightning. You get the picture. Oh, and did I mention Kendall's coat?

It was a wonderful Getaway, as always. I thoroughly enjoyed the "Strangers in a Strange Land" workshop, which I co-led with Severn (whose brainchild it was). Who would have thought that songs of cultural adjustment would include "Thomas the Rhymer?" But it absolutely qualified. Gordon Bok came and sang "In the Kind Land" for that workshop as well. It was delightful to see Kendall again, and the duet on "Phoebe Snow" was phenomenal. You could tell Kendall was right there with it. Kathy Westra's "A Place In My Heart" workshop - what I was able to get to of it - was also especially lovely. Sylvia Herold is one of my new favorite performers!

Gordon's rendition of "Kendall and the Kitchen" has already been mentioned. It's the second time I've heard Gordon do that - with Kendall there, both times - but this time I have photographs of Kendall's reaction. Kendall, how much will you donate to the Mudcat or Getaway scholarship fund (your choice) for me not to post them?

And of course, Kiran thoroughly enjoyed meeting everyone, having Nanny Jaqcui change his diaper, and getting cuddled by everyone. He did, however, note that many of those who talked Big about cuddling him, seeing him, and changing nappies somehow found somewhere else to be this year. Harumph! We missed you.

Thank you to all who put the weekend together!

I'm also interested in Gordon's instrument and how it was tuned. It had diatonic frets like a dulcimer, 3 strings, and a triangular shape. Looked a lot like a BALALAIKA but that's not what Gordon called it. Didn't have the shape of a typical Domra. 'tis a mystery.

I believe it was, but the language was quite strange to my ear, so my instncts may be all of. The instrument was nylon stringed and fretless, or with tied on frets; he mentioned that it is called -- in RUssian -- something like orbug or thereabouts. I wish my short-term memory would stop screwing around with me. Or p'raps it's my own damn fault for letting all those guys ply me with strong waters.

Was Hatu Kara one of the songs Gordon played? I'll have to ask him what instrument he was playing.

Another high point. Having my first cuddle with young Kiran Schatz. Hopefully one of many he will have for his Nanny Jacqui over the years. Oh, and if Big Mick is reading through this thread, I even got to changing the little lad's diaper, something, I am told on good authority, that you were in grave dereliction regarding.

I don't know, Severn. But I think you should definitely hide after that last joke.

I have suffered inestimable damage to my psyche from the vast selection of puns offered at the Getaway. The first few were announced rather hesitantly by those in attendance, but as those were met with an escalating level of shocked approval, we were soon involved in a pun-making exhibition that would put a Star-Trek Convention to shame.

My favorite moments from the Getaway...a rousing rendition of Key to the Highway at the Saturday Night Peace Jam...Amos, in characteristic canvas hat, fleece boots, and beat-to-hell jeans, strolling through the grounds at twilight, grinning, with his Martin over his shoulder... Mr Schotz putting tears in my eyes with his Scots belly-button joke...Linda Goodman putting tears in my eyes with her ladle...being presented with my brand new Mustang...Carl's jazzy rendition of Georgia...Dick G's banjo lesson...the Temptress and her Concertina...Gordon's old Russian melodies...Wye...harmonizing with Lucy G on "Home Sings Me"...the Contra Band...
