Did Paul Newman actually play the banjo in Cool Hand Luke, or was he just finger-synchin'?

Song written by Ed Rush and George Cromarty, popularized by Marrs: See post by Joe Offer 14 Oct 04 in that thread, and following post by Ed Rush 05 Oct 05. Back on the 4th of July I was looking for a replay of a previous fireworks display and in the process I find all of these simple shits firing bottle rockets out of their asshole! I kid you not. There's three guys and a girl in one where she has her pants down and they pour alcohol on her and light it! Woof! Her buns are burnin'! Even Ol' Spaw was appalled.   Truthfully, never have I had a member of the opposite sex with her pants down and decided the best thing to do was to set her ass on fire.

Bill Sables was very disappointed when he came here from England and toured the entire US and didn't find a Plastic Jesus. As soon as I found out about his predicament, I went shopping.

I found a good selection and boiled it down to two that looked just like the Plastic Jesus statues of my youth. It was a hard choice - should I get him a glow-in-the-dark version, or one in the official red-and-creamy colors of the Sacred Heart Auto League? I chose the "official" living-color version, because I've found through experience that the glowing plastic doesn't have the eerily inspiring glow that one would think it should have.

One thing about the Plastic Jesus has been modernized - He now has adhesive on His bottom instead of a magnet, because so few cars have metal dashboards anymore.

"If I weave around at night,
And policemen think I'm tight,
They never find my bottle - though they ask.

Plastic Jesus shelters me,
For His head comes off, you see
He's hollow, and I use Him for a flask.
Plastic Jesus! Plastic Jesus,

Riding on the dashboard of my car ...
Ride with me and have a dram
Of the blood of the Lamb -
Plastic Jesus is a holy bar."

I'll drink to that.

Leadfingers got it right. The old "Sing Out" reprint booklets, to which a lot of us subscribed back then, had one issue with a long list of "Plastic Jesus" verses. I still have that booklet (circa 1960) at home somewhere. However, people were singing variants of the song in our local coffeehouse as far back as 1958, so it must be much older. It is one of those songs that seems to attract new verses like those nasty limerick-based ditties.

I remember getting the original Sing Out! issue with this song in it (not the reprint booklet). I was in high school at the time, which means between 1961 - 1965.

I'm not absolutely sure, but I think the song was NOT new to me when I first saw it in print; I had already "heard it through the grapevine," i.e, through the so-called Folk Process.

Spaw, lighten up! If no one had started a new thread, but simply searched the archives instead, the rest of us would not have had this opportunity to relive old times during this blessed holiday season of 2007. Anyone who doesn't want to read over it again doesn't have to. Open a different thread instead, or go to YouTube, or Ebay, or whatever tickles your fancy...

Bullshit......I much prefer being cantankerous and bitchin' about dumb stuff. Three words.......Easily searchable database. It has always been a highlight of this joint and one of the things that makes it different technically. There are lots of community and friends things as well but having easy access to a wide variety has always been a good thing at the very least. Today we had someone post some lyrics that are basically verbatim from the database. What's the point?

I don't expect it to change......hasn't done it since I came here '98 so I doubt it will but I'll still get off occasionally just pissin' and moanin' about it.

Murray you assjack!   LMAO........You went looking for that didn't you? Pathetic thing is, its a very pretty song (and she's very good!) but the curly pow thread is just screwed! 241 explanations of "curly pow" and another 519 duplicating someone elses and EVERYONE acts like they are not only right, but the first to voice it, instead of the 24th which they are!

I did learn some stuff over there in the process though and I posted it at the time. The historical significance of the Curley Pow Warriors in the Crimea and the charge of the Light Brigade were woven together. I had no idea til I did the research. Here it is again since this thread's a piece of crap anyway...........

Light Brigades were specially trained in night fighting and carried torches into battle. After encountering initial successes against Buddhist Monks they were assigned to battalions fighting against the Curley Pow Warriors in Crimea. On the night of September 15th they devastated the entire Daintey Davey Division, setting fire to their curley pows and sending them running in flaming retreat across the battlefield with the Light Brigade in chase. The "blunder" oft referred to was that the Light Brigade followed too closely and when the flaming Curley Pow Warriors encountered an unseen future supply dump of the Nazis in WWII, the whole place blew up killing all of the Daveys and a goodly number of the Light Brigade as well.

Isn't that amazing? Well so much for that Murray......Thanks for the interlude. Now we need to let the good folks on this thread get back to posting repetitive info about Plastic Jesus.

Say Murray.......Have you seen the "Black Velvet Band"--Jed Marum version thread? Oh yeah, its a really different version................

Spaw,

………….. Three words.......Easily searchable database. …………

Since the crash, Mudcat is far from an easily searchable database.

The thread title gave a pretty good idea of what was going to be discussed. If you don't want to read the repeats then don't open the thread.

I get far more tired of your repeated gripes about what others want to discuss and the tone that you use when expressing you complaints.

Yep....Still a lot of recovery work needed but I wonder why some people find things so much easier than others?

You may tire of me to yours heart's content. I don't care what is discussed but yeah, I get tired. I learn a lot by simply reading the threads. Most times my questions are answered but I might have a new one. If so I just ask it there.

And I do skip a lot of threads. So what? You can feel free to skip my posts.

After doing some due diligence, I recall that the song was indeed authored by two fellow former residents of Fresno, CA, Ed Rush and George Cromarty. I once dated the latter's sister, just prior to entering the Army (no, she wasn't the reason). George later became quite a new age guitarist, I understand, though I have no idea where he is now. I think Ed Rush is still about. He may have posted a comment in the past. This is one of those songs people just grabbed and modified to suit themselves. Does anyone know whether the movie credits the composers?

Spaw, the excessive repetition gets to me sometimes, too. I just can't be bothered to always point it out.

Except for now.

If you link back to the earlier Plastic Jesus thread that is cited above as containing Joe Offer's ultra-complete set of verses, you'll find an incredible number of repetitions of the exact same verses, not only throughout the thread, but even within individual postings ~ including, even, Joe's highly touted long-ass message!

Grrrr!

It would make for a very interesting thread, discussing how many well-known people in other areas than music are also competent musicians.

Steve Martin is a very able banjo player, but he is the only one to come to mind at the moment.

did you know Steve Martin was a banjo player, Spaw ? I now require you to reveal the name of a closet dulcimer player. You can PM me if you don't want to break any professional code of ethics ...

I never get tired of repetition although I must say I am amazed at the interest in the curly pow and Alice Blue Gown. Oh yeah, and that Barges girl scout song. Someone can ask me the same question 20 times and if I feel like answering it I will and I hate going to threads that look interesting and seeing they were started in 1997 and someone was jackhammered perhaps into reopening them. Like I said before, but I don't mind repetition, you wouldn't hand someone a tape recording of a converstaion you had ten years ago would you? And say we have already had this conversation. Listen to the tape and then if you have anything new to add go ahead. Then why not have a new thread. it is up to the owners of course though. mg

Steve MArtin is really quite good as a matter of fact Murray. Years ago when he did his stand-up he used it mainly as a prop but then would shock the hell out of everyone by ripping a few great licks.

Now I don't know about a closet dulcimer player but Whoopi Goldberg used to have a Hammered Dulcimer in her bathroom(;<))
