If you can't find it anywhere else, Paul Newman sings it in the movie "Cool Hand Luke."

Its roughly the tune of "OKalahoma Hills" or whatever it is called....

"Way down yonder in the Indian Nation, I rode my pony on the reservation,in those Oklahoma hills where I was born
Way down yonder in the Indian Nation,a cowboys life is my occupation,in those Oklahoma hills where I was born"

This may not help, but its the sest I can do..

Now THERE's a switch--imagine citing a Woody Guthrie song as the source of a tune.

Heh.. touches off a memory of Weird Al's song "Velvet Elvis." - is there perchance any relation between the two? (i.e. he ripped the idea off from "Plastic Jesus"?)

I know the tune, and two verses, but that always left me wanting more. Is that all there is?

verse1: I don't care if it rains or freezes 'Long as I've got my plastic Jesus Sittin' on the dashboard of my car...

Comes in colors pink and pleasant Glows in the dark 'cause it's irridescent Sittin' on the dashboard of my car.

verse2: I don't care if it's dark and scary 'Long as I've got my Virgin Mary Sittin' on the....

I really wish there was more. Is that all you know, too?

rapunzel

PS: I have, by the way, a lovely glow-in-the-dark plastic virgin mary figurine, although I do not keep it on the dashboard of my car. I learned this song from my dad, who was raised Catholic, and who was very impressed with my "Mary" figurine, saying it was much larger than any of the ones he had when he was a kid. When I got it, he immediately ran into the closet to check it out.

Ah, there are lots of verses, Rapunzel! Just type Plastic Jesus in the search box, and you'll find two versions of the song. Have fun!Oh, and be careful with your plastic Mary. Somebody told me once she's radioactive......That information came from a very reliable source, a kid I knew in Catholic grade school.

As a good (bad?) ex-Catholic girl, I have felt obligated to remind my ex-Catholic friends of our roots by giving them Glow Marias, Virgin of Guadaloupe beach towels, Virgin Mary night lights, etc. Needless to say, this has provoked threats of vengeance from those friends. If you, too, want your own plastic iconic religious figures, Rabbi cards (like baseball cards, except with Torah stats), Parking goddesses or rubber chickens, visit the Motherlode of Tacky Toys at:

Archie McPhee

You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll spend all your money on useless junk the way I do...

Those versoins listed in the DT don't really go too well with my melody. I must not have all of it. I think I have a heretofore unrecorded couple of lines there, though. (Comes in colors pink and pleasant, glows in the dark 'cause it's irridescent)

Whatever

I have, by the way, been privy to the wonderful/horrible secrets found within the Archie McPhee catalog. I don't find it hard to resist buying things myself, but I have a number of friends who have given me stuff. I had a boyfriend who bought the set of plastic ants and kept them with his unwashed hot cocoa cup in his locker in HS, and I have a lovely glow-in-the-dark rubber cockroach, which I sometimes wear around my neck, and I'm sure that my "Mary" is from out of those hallowed pages.

sorry, I wax eloquent upon a non-folk-related-them I'll just check out their web page.

I think that it is VERY folk related. Just go to any seaside town in the UK to see the folklore associated with gag gifts.

TTFN, Bert.
