These are what I figured out from recordings. Can anyone clarify if the last line is correct? It sounds ok, a little off maybe.

Fmaj                            C         G
What ails you, what ails you my daughter Janet
Dm                   F
Why you look so pale and wan
C       Am      C       Em
Have you had some sore sickness
C          Am            F
Or yet have lain with a man

The related thread "Willy O'Winsbury as done by Pentangle?" includes a link to a midi tune, and a couple of chord versions that may help. They don't fit the tune in my head though - which is a version by Leonard and Squires from "Broken Down Gentlemen" - and If there's a version to beat this (highlighted by a gorgeous fiddle solo by "Squigsy") then I'd love to hear it!

Try playing the Em barred on the seven fret, then switch the C and the Am on the last line. It sounded a bit better to me.

I take it we are talking of the tune which originally belonged to False Foudrage but became associated with Winsbury because someone [one of Planxty IIRC] once got confused in looking it up?

Yes - on checking, I find a reference to Andy Irvine having claimed to unconsciously slipping into the Fause Foodrage tune while doing Willie Of Winsbury so it became universally assoc'd with the latter.

I take it that is the tune we are addressing in this thread?

What tune originally belonged to False Foodrage? What is the reference for "originally belonged"? It is not in Bronson. I sing it to Lord Gregory, a slight variation of Brian Peters' setting.

Susan: The tune I have in mind, the one Pentangle used, occurs played by the brass at the beginning of the closing procession in the film The Wicker Man. It is the one I always associate with Winsbury.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rr16W2wStXQ

is Anne Briggs singing it.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R3_U6o0LogM

is Pentangle's.

& here indeed is Andy Irvine:-

This is the tune I gather originally belonged to Foudrage.

Though I can't, come to think of it, recall ever having heard Fause Foodrage sung. Anyone out there sing it? Can anyone link to a recording? It doesn't even appear in DT. But the tune we are talking of seems a close variant of Bronson's version 1 of Foodrage.

Fairport convention used the tune for Farewell farewell. You may wan to look up the chords for that as comparison.

Thanks
Pat

I think the tune is older than willie but andy irvine arranged it to take the lyrics. Tell me folks is Farewell Farewell is the dame tune again?

'False Foudrage'(Child 89) is one of the relatively small number of ballads for which Child supplied a melody, corresponding to version 89C and deriving from the Harris MS. This was printed in the final volume of ESPB, in the section 'Ballad Airs from Manuscript', and is very similar to the tune commonly used for 'Willie O Winsbury'.

In my Dover edition, a tune for 'Willie'(100J) is printed over the page - it's nothing like the Foodrage tune. The story goes (I remember Diane Easby discussing it here on Mudcat) that Andy Irvine flipped over the page - accidentally or by design? - and used the Foodrage tune for Willie. It's odd how a relatively recent compilation like that can become so definitive that hardly anyone now thinks of singing 'Willie O Winsbury' to the tune that once went with it.

"Though I can't, come to think of it, recall ever having heard Fause Foodrage sung. Anyone out there sing it?"

Well I do ( the only other person I know is Chris Coe, and she uses a different text and tune - not the one in Child either). As Susan says, I adapted Lord Gregory, because the tune in Child seemed too firmly associated with Willie. If you want to hear a sample of mine, go here and click on the title.
