Will order my copy tomorrow. Very much looking forward to Dave Arthur's book on Bert Lloyd.
Patiently awaiting publication date.
Good news. A new edition of my book "Songs of Struggle and Protest"
(long out of print) will be published by Irish Labour History Society
in early September 2008.

Radio Ballad enthusiasts should note that Charles Parker's daughter Sara - an interviewer for the 2006 series - has produced a documentary about the originals, to be broadcast on 21 June on Radio 4 at 8pm in the Archive Hour slot. And there's another one on its way, made by an Australian named Ros Bluett, which will go out on ABC from Sydney (2pm their time, mind) on 26 July. It'll be downloadable from the ABC site for the following month, but I do have a copy if anyone wants to hear it in advance.

Listened to Peter Cox's informative talk on the Ballads and the research for the book at Shepley and bought it straight away. From what I've seen so far (no time to really read it on the road), it's going to be invaluable in keeping the making of the ballads and their importance on record.

Further to the Radio Ballad CD issue, Topic have told me that the new CDs have just arrived, and they'll be putting them on sale on Tuesday, presumably with some website indication that they are now back on sale.

I was privileged to have a stall next to Peter at Shepley Festival - a newcomer to the folk scene he has plugged in very quickly.

And more importantly - the book is great. I bought my copy at the Shepley Festival and read it from cover to cover.

I'm in Gateshead before a launch at 6.30 that precedes a Peggy Seeger concert here this evening. I do a c 45 min presentation followed by a discussion, and Peggy will be here for this one, plus a rapidly recovering Louis Killen (from eye-wateringly heroic surgery) plus (I hope) Colin Ross. It's free, so if anyone's in the area do come along.

Next Sun 25th I'm in Blackheath doing the same thing at 3.15, so the same applies. I'm doing the Leytonstone one that Kevin mentions, then one on July 1 in Dove Holes village hall. That's the last station John Axon went through alive before he crashed, and July 1 is the day before the 50th anniversary of its first broadcast.

The website's at www.setintosong.co.uk, and thus far I've put on the first two pages of each chapter, so you can get the flavour. You can order the book from me directly from there, which cuts out the middle men (and gives me a chance of breaking even...). By the end of May the bibliog, detailed footnotes, and transcripts of all the programmes will be up on the site. I just need to get these launches out of the way before I can finalise it. Delighted to hear from any of you via the website, privately, or publicly though Mudcat.

As for the Radio Ballad CDs, the wrestling match to get them back into copyright between me, Tony Engle of Topic and the BBC is one story too many. Suffice it to say that Tony reckons they should be back in copyright and on sale this week. Check the Topic site. Meanwhile I have copies of all but Travelling People (who, of course, have been moved on...).

I think you'll find that Peter Cox has bought up Topic's remaining stocks of the radio ballad CDs. So if there's any you're short of, now is probably a good time to remedy the shortfall.

That's what I assumed Fred but as it was single I was wondering if there was a special issue "sampler" tied in with the book but I guess it's just the Topic set.

In fact Walthamstow Folk Club has had an email from Peter Cox about the launch at it mentions 4 events

10 May at 3.30        Birmingham central library lecture theatre
18 May at 10.45        Shepley Folk Festival
20 May at 6.30        The Sage, Gateshead
25 May at 3.15        Blackheath Concert Halls recital room

These are/were apparently before concerts on Peggy Seeger's tour so I guess the June event in Leytonstone is a special with the author giving more of a talk and leading a discussion so should be very interesting.

The jacket price and the price quoted on Amazon is £20-00, although copies bought from the Set Into Song website are quoted at £15-00 inc p&p.

I received an advance copy a couple of days ago. While I obviously haven't had time to read it yet, it looks a handsome, meticulous and well thought out production, which should do a lot to enhance our knowledge of the programmes themselves, as well as all the principal characters involved.

One interesting innovation. Minor endnotes, plus footnotes and bibliography will be posted on the website, rather than in the book. These will be together with transcriptions of all the radio ballads. I understand the author also intends using the site to post any further information which comes to light, plus any errors or omissions which may need correction.

Unfortunately I've lost the list of launch dates which Peter sent me, although interested parties can doubtless get them from him. However, the one launch I will be at takes place on Tuesday July 1st in the commmunity centre at Dove Holes, Derbyshire. That's about about as close as you can get to Bibbington Top where the runaway started.

Just heard that a book on the Radio Ballads entitled 'Set Into Song' by Peter Cox, is imminent. No more details yet, but will pass them on when I get them.
Also the long awaited biography of A L Lloyd by Dave Arthur is due out in November.
