Subject: BS: Resuscitate the Dead Cliche
From: VirginiaTam
Date: 01 Mar 09 - 03:10 PM

This little game I used to play on long car journeys with my kids. Well they were preteens and teens when we played. It is called Resuscitate the Dead Cliche.

Anybody out there want to play? Guess the cliche(s). Or add your own and let us guess.

Never mind whether or no they are worthy of reviving
Can you tell from which cliche, I am deriving
when I say that

Lady Luck and I are going set up a sidewalk kiosk dispensing citrus refreshment

He whacks a circuitous path at the rhododendron

A turkey in the oven is more nourishing than a skeet shoot

It is highly inadvisable that one should embark upon a career in either mooching or loansharking

A fine point BIC full of black ink beats the hell out of a Remington

Be careful! Mr. Ed might bite you on the nose

The medicine has some bugs in it

What does a sewing machine have to do with a clock anyway

Loose change in a ceramic oinker is just as good as a paycheck

If you dropped the homogenised don't seek counselling

This is the maximum pressure threshold for a biscuit

The death penalty was rather harsh punishment for Moggie's interest

That's just the sabertooth's mouthing off decreased by Darwinian domestication

Continuity was buggered for want of a better metal ring

What could be less complicated than fruit filled pastry

External to cubic cogitation

It's a feline nightie

Lady Luck and I are going set up a sidewalk kiosk dispensing citrus refreshment: When you're given a lemon, make lemonade.

A turkey in the oven is more nourishing than a skeet shoot: A bird in the hand is better than a bird in the bush (?)

A fine point BIC full of black ink beats the hell out of a Remington: The pen is mightier than the sword (?)

Be careful! Mr. Ed might bite you on the nose: Don't look a gift horse in the mouth

The medicine has some bugs in it: Always a fly in the ointment

Loose change in a ceramic oinker is just as good as a paycheck: A penny saved is a penny earned (?) urned lol

If you dropped the homogenised don't seek counselling: Don't sweat the small stuff. Or Don't cry over spilt milk

Continuity was buggered for want of a better metal ring: For want of a nail the horse was lost (?)

It's a feline nightie: It's the cat's pajamas

This is the maximum pressure threshold for a biscuit = the way the cookie crumbles.

The death penalty was rather harsh punishment for Moggie's interest = curiosity killed the cat.

Alternative methods for defuzzing a moggie (or tabby) = more than one way to skin a cat.

If you dropped the homogenized don't seek counseling....support 'gay' rights

This is the maximum pressure threshold for a biscuit...Wow! What a babe!!

The death penalty was rather harsh punishment for Moggie's interest..I posted on a Mog, or, was that a blog?

Ocular relationships are permissible between HRM and felix domesticus.

Competitive transmission-time scenarios may be taken advantage of by reduced rates of velocity if accompanied by constant torque and load adjustments resulting in non-variable rates of change.

Liz, the adage I had in mind was;
'There are more ways of killing a cat than choking it with cream!
Your shortened version lost something, I felt.

And in the same vein;
'When initiating the opening of avian ovum, the use of external-combustion-generated high-pressure steam, operating heavy forging equipment, is generally contra-indicated.'

John, you have nothing to fear but fear itself, I think.

Somewhere out there there must be a cliche something like "you don't need a steam drill to crack an egg", but I've never heard of that one...good night, all.

Well done, FP. It is an admonition against the extravagant use of equipment, or other over-enthusiastic action, much like the cat/cream one. The cat-cream-hammer-egg are incidental to the extravagance.
as the proclaimer's expression shows.
Usually something like; "It's like using a steam-(Trip)hammer to crack an egg!" English engineering saying.

Don't tell granny how to suck eggs....

Gurney - that's what I meant but the old brain is on vacation right now (see 'how do you cope with the day job' thread.. it's a great analogy!). Besides, there was nothing to indicate that you were actually osbstucting the traceartes with said butter-fat.

And I meant 'more haste, less speed'. Don't blame me, blame Microsofts' theasaurus....

That's a dinosaur that reads a lot.

As FP says, if you don't know the adage, it's hard to get the wording right, Liz. Traceartes? Like in trachea?

I notice the absence of a couple old standbys:

Inviting one to perform an aerial fornication within the confines of a rotating pastry.

Lacking the ability to discern the difference between one's posterior orifice and an excavation.

Inviting one to engage in a lengthy perambulation upon a miniscule docking platform.

Cease flailing upon a deceased equine.

I'm sure I'll think up some others, once I stop guffawing at all the other posts.
