Subject: mandolin,Tom Rush From: belter@iastate.edu Date: 30 Mar 97 - 11:57 PM Hobo's mandolin (Tom Rush) This hear mandolin, was carved out of pine Was willed to me by an old hobo, way down the line He donated this mandolin, with these last words before I pass over boy, I'll show you some cords This hear mandolin made out of earth and of stone The sound of the railroad makes you feel all alone This hear mandolin'll take a hobo back home This hear mandolin, is sure full of sand It'll play out of tune, if there's a cop on the train She'll sing you the song of the super chief, out of ST. Paul And that ain't all This hear mandolin, makes a young girl open up her window Like a warm bed on a rainy night, like a hex sign on a barn This hear mandolin, will keep a hobo from harm repeat first verse This hear mandolin's made out of barns and old water tanks If the juke box is busted and you need an old song This hear mandolin'll take a hobo back home Couldn't find this on the web anywere. I thought of posting a request hear, but I figured I could transcribe it as easly as the next guy. I got it off The Best Of Tom Rush album. One of many Tom Rush songs that really grab me. |
Subject: RE: mandolin,Tom Rush From: LaMarca Date: 31 Mar 97 - 02:45 PM This song was written by a wonderful Chicago songwriter, Michael Smith. He's written a lot of really great songs; his best known one, "The Dutchman", has been recorded by lots of people. His home page is at: http://www.mcs.net/~jmurdock/michael/smith.html

Subject: RE: mandolin,Tom Rush From: BlueJay Date: 26 May 00 - 03:08 PM Thanks for the lyrics. Wow, if this song was written by Michael Smith, and performed by Tom Rush it has to be great. Now I'm going to have to buy the album to hear what it sounds like. Oh well, you can never have too many Tom Rush CD's anyway. Thanks for the inspiration, BlueJay |
Subject: RE: mandolin,Tom Rush From: Pinetop Slim Date: 26 May 00 - 07:03 PM You can't have too many Michael Smith CD's either, BlueJay. Of course, he's only got 4 or 5 out, but they include one disc with remixes of his first too albums. Caught him at the Rose Garden Coffeehouse in Mansfield, MA., last Saturday. I hadn't laughed so hard in a long time as I did over his Famous in France, Imitation Elvis Blues, Weeping Madonna, but Dutchman and This Here Mandolin are so poignant, and Sister Clarissa is so both poignant and funny. One of the best songwriters and a wonderful performer. |
Subject: RE: mandolin,Tom Rush From: GUEST,Frank of Toledo Date: 26 May 00 - 11:36 PM Michael's new CD called 'Michael Margaret Pat & Kate", is equally as good as his earlier ones. Check the Folk Legacy catalog on Gordon Bok "Return To The Land" CD 118 and listen to another fine version of Michael Smith's "This Here Mandolin." My favorite Michael song is "I Took My Father With Me". |

Subject: RE: mandolin,Tom Rush From: Francy Date: 23 Jan 08 - 07:10 PM It's a simple song with a few delicate twists......Try it in Cmaj7....with an Fmaj7 and a G7 I could be wrong, but Michael was here in Toledo, Oregon in concert in 2005 and will be back here next month.......and this is how he showed it to me......... the first line stay in a Cmaj7 second line go to Fmaj7 and end with G7 third line Cmaj7 fourth line and so on....Keep playing with the major 7ths and it comes alive..........Gordon Bok used a different progression...........Frank of Toledo |
