after his phenomenally successful two gigs,in the south east of England, should Dick Miles now learn to yodel,or would doing Percy Edwards covers,be the next step in this megastars lightning rise to fame.

You know, one "copycat" of the Susan Boyle thread would have been enough. This is the second. Let's see if we can keep it to two.

But anyhow, Dick, I think you might do a good job yodeling. I guess I've heard yodeling mostly in American traditional-style country music and in music from the Alps. Are there any other styles of music that include yodeling?

Well for 'authentic' yodelling maybe the Tyrol is the place to start but what a wonderful opportunity to link this wonderful archive footage of Ramblin' Jack Elliott & Pete Seeger performing Mule Skinner Blues mit yodels

Try The Cackle (Dezurik) Sisters for yodelling inspiration.

This is my favourite yodelling song http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nn27xBY8X68

I still remember everybody going round singing this one, in the early 60's, and it made everybody happy.

I wonder if Dick can change it to suit his style.

Don Walser died not so long ago. He was part of the Texas Plainsmen and was to my mind one of the best country music yodellers.

Didn't Frank Ifield team up with Johnny Rotten to record "I remember you, you bastard"?

Anyone come across The Dezurik Sisters ? Any song that rhymes "cactus" with "practice" can't be all bad.

yodelling apart, Dick, what I would like to know is whether, as a live entertainer, your wit and repartee on stage compared to the wit and repartee you demonstrate on your Mudcat threads is:

A much funnier
B slightly funnier
C just about the same
D slightly less funny
E much less funny.

(just in case you are ever in my neck of the woods and I have the option of seeing you perform ).

I'd say C. Which isn't bad going - I'm much funnier on Mudcat than on stage. I wish I could do the patter*, but the moment I get up there it all goes out of my head - which is odd, because songs hardly ever do. Maybe I should sing my introductions.

*"Hello, good evening and welcome to Folk Club. My name's Roy Harper. This first song is by Millican and Nesbitt.
[pause]
Actually it's not *by* Millican and Nesbitt, it's by the King Brothers.
[pause]
It's from the album The King Brothers Play The Kray Brothers.
[pause]
And Lose."
- Richard Digance, supporting Steeleye Span, Fairfield Halls, Croydon, 1974. Now I feel old.

Thanks for all the links, everybody.   I enjoy hearing the differences among all the yodelers.

The DeZurik sisters are unique, what with that buzzing they do.

Dick Miles live isn't necesarily funnier, but he does make much more sense! and you have the added (and much more important) benefit of his great singing.

Hey Dick - I think we could both take lessons from the DeZurik Sisters.

Boy, that is really tight yodelling. In harmony!

I don't think Roy Rogers and the Sons of the Pioneers or Riders in the Sky are as tight as those gals.

Thanks, BillD.

Dick - sorry to hijack your thread. I'll keep checking for you on Britain's Got Talent!

Seamus

One of my favorite yodelers is at

http://www.kerrychristensen.com/

I've never seen him live, but I've listened to his recordings and enjoyed them. His yodeling is great and his 'normal' voice is very fine.

I feel that a yodeler should be worth listening to between the yodels.

Best of all, Kerry sells instructional stuff on how to yodel. He admits that most of the CD's are purchased by grandparents who give them to their grandchildren to get revenge on their own kids.

Hi Cap'n,
One of Billy Connolly's funniest stories was of going into a music shop in Glasgow and finding the sheet music of Hank Williams songs with the yodeling written out word-for-word - 'yodel-e-dodle-e-do-del-dee...etc'
As much as I enjoy yodelling and all similar styles of vocal techniques, and despite the fact that I cut my musical teeth on Hank Willimas records, I've never (quite) been able to take it seriously as an art form.
