"(''When people ask me why I went to Vietnam,'' one American colonel once remarked, ''I say I thought you knew. You sent me.'')"

As I recall, the Colonel was a Lieutenant Colonel named Sumner. (I had intended to do a masters degree on literature from the Vietnam War and he'd authored one of the books I intended to cite. Never did do it, though. Life got in the way.)

Banks: When you do that, you hear Che Guevara, as a Bhuddisatva speaking in Hindi, teaching humanity. The rough translation is: "Revolutionaries only bring MORE revolutions...",
and "you can't stop hatred with hatred..." Then it gets "too Spiritual" for most Folks...

From: Azizi

You're welcome, Lizzie.

When I write summaries of programs I'm channelling my Virgo "love of detail" Rising sign and Mars (astrological) energy. But when I make cut & paste, typos, and other proof reading mistakes that's my impatient, look at the big picture, love to share knowledge Sagittarius energy coming into play. Given that interplay of energy, I'm prone to make mistakes in my writing (as my Sun, Mercury, and Jupiter Sagittarius energy doesn't like using the Preview feature). I think that I made only made one mistake in that post-I meant to write that "I hope that interview is transcribed and posted online for those who didn't have the opportunity to hear it."

In addition to the astrological explanation, my interest in summarizing radio (or television) programs is heavily influenced by my daughter's love of sign language. My daughter isn't deaf but became interested in learning American Sign Language when she was one of a group of children in her performing arts elementary school who were selected to be part of an onstage singing/signing choir. My daughter took two sign language courses at the University of Pittsburgh and incorporates signing as part of her conversation and class room lessons with her kindergarten students. I regret that I only learned a few sign language words, but her experiences have raised my awareness about the need to have online transcripts and summaries of radio and television programs for those persons who are deaf or who have difficulty hearing, or for those who can hear but missed that program or for people who caught that program but want to read it for one reason or another.

I want to also note that there were a number of things that Bruce shared in his interview that I didn't include in my summary. As a storyteller, I really like how Bruce uses anecdotes and quotes that help people experience what he says. For instance, when Bruce was asked why he stopped performing he shared how he was tired of eating hot dogs, hamburger in town after town when he was touring. Bruce talked about being in motels or hotels that all looked the same and sometimes having to call the clerk at the motel's front desk the next morning after a performance to ask him or her which town he was in. Those kinds of make the experience real to listeners.

When Bruce talked about touring with the anti-Vietnam war Presidential candidate Eugene McCarthy campaign, he prefaced his remarks by saying that he wasn't going to talk about US politics but he then kinda talked about it anyway (I love that ploy) by sharing a quote about war and soldiers. I've been trying to remember that quote because I thought it was so profound. If Bruce or anyone else remembers what he said, would you please post it?
Thanks.

Azizi, thank you for your in-depth details of the interview. I got so carried away listening last night...(and trying to stay awake because of the time difference)...that I couldn't write much. Your eloquent post says it all though.

Great interview, Bruce. You put those lassies completely at ease. Well done. And, as others have said above, thanks to Rappy for organising it in the first place.

I wish to thank you all for your comments. The gals on the show were great. Period. I felt at ease and quite welcomed by them.

We talked about a gang of stuff, and they indicated that they were a bit nervous. I replied, "OK then, that's three of us."

Thanks very much to Rapaire for having me on the show. Now, I'm looking forward to hearing the Morse/Deckman interviews. Those guys have LOTS of tales to tell.

Rapaire is gonna send me a copy of the show, and if a few folks want a copy I'll tend to that. I want a copy, because it'd be cool to have one. I dislike the sound of my speaking voice--always have. But I'm curious to know what the hell I said. Bundle of nerves: that's me.

As to mentioning some folks who made the CD possible, if I'd said everyone's name we still be on the show.

The folks who meant so much to it were named on the liner notes, and so far I haven't been told I forgot anyone. Whew!

Thanks again, all.

Bruce

Well, Ann and Kath Ann didn't appear to be scared at all. As I wrote, it seemed much more like a conversation than an interview. The sense I got was that the women sincerely loved Bruce's music and found him to be an interesting person.

I started to write "an interesting character".

That too.

The women were Ann and Kath Ann and they were scared shitless that they'd louse it up. They are by no stretch professional interviewers.

This afternoon, this very afternoon, they recorded the one and only Kendall Morse. Last Friday they recorded Bob Nelson.

By the way, wish Kendall good things on Wednesday when he gets his throat cut.

And yes, the interview will (soon, I hope) be on the Library's website and possibly also as a transcription.

Bruce, that was a great interview! You were bodacious*!

*For those who didn't have the opportunity to hear that interview, one of the two women interviewers shared that someone had described Bruce Murdoch as "the Canadian Bob Dylan". Bruce graciously declined that comparison and strongly complimented Dylan, saying that the one word for that singer/song writer is "bodacious."

"Bodacious
Prodominately used during the 80's and early 90's, bodacious is a combination of the words bold and audacious. To be bodacious is to be:

impressive, awesome, brave in action, remarkable, prodigious".
http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=bodacious

-snip-

That definition fits you too, Bruce.

**

The radio interview covered so many facets of Bruce's life. What I found most interesting was hearing about how Bruce traveled throughout the United States singing a song he had written for the Presidential campaign of anti-war Senator Eugene McCarthy. And even the serious subject about being a first responder/fire fighter included some lighthearted moments when Bruce shared how one of the firefighters rescued a turtle from a home fire after the residents of that house had gotten out.

The conversation between Bruce and the two women interviewers flowed without any gaps and there was a very comfortable feel to the interview-it seemed like a conversation more than a radio interview. Bruce's sense of humor (humour) was interspersed with informative comments about how CDs are made nowadays and how he returned to composing songs, singing, and playing the guitar after two decades or more away from those forms of creative expressions. Two other discussion points that I hope aren't forgotten was Bruce mentioning that he wrote (writes?) short stories, and the question by one of the interviewers about Bruce composing a song about firefighters.

Not surprisingly, in the interview, Bruce thanked those who had encouraged him to return to song writing and singing/guitar playing. Bruce mentioned Ron (Bankley) , Amos and his wife, and Mike (Rapaire) by name.

Thanks Rapaire and thanks to the Marshall Public Library of Pocatello, Idaho and its radio program. I hope that a transcript of that interview is transcribed and posted online for those who didn't have the opportunity to hear it. It was well worth the wait.

Dorothy, Bruce has spoken about why he gave up music, his return to it, and how 'Matters of the Heart' came together, with the help of his friends. At the moment, he's talking about his fire fighting in Hinton, how much he loves it, what it means to all the men and women involved...

"You're a very genuine man" the lady has just said.."We continue to fall in love with your music..."

Yup, to both of those...

And now he's talking about The Apple Hollow Festival, getting together with so many of his old friends from Montreal...

'I Can See You Now' has just started playing them out, in the closing seconds...

"Thank you Bruce, so very much"

Yeah, Thank you Bruce! For your music, and for being the man you are, the man we all care about so much.

Oh gawd...I'm still confoooooosed....Mudcat's on American time, so that's er....5 hours behind us, making it er....7pm over there now...and Rappy posted at 6pm, which is 11pm over here, stating there were 2 more hours to go, so that would make it 8pm over there..and er.....she takes off her socks and shoes..getting her toes ready...

9pm
10pm
11pm
12.00 m something
1.00am...

By Jove! I think I have it!!!

It's at 1am over here....and now..it's 2 minutes past midnight, so that's er...only...58 minutes to go!!!

YAY!!!

But..have I got the right day? Because over here, today is already tomorrow, so Rappy may be hearing it yesterday, in which case, will I have missed it entirely..because how can I hear something in the future that's actually in the past...?

And is it actually being aired at 1am? Or is it 'somewhere in the programme'? And how long is the programme?...'cos if I'm already in tomorrow, then Rappy may have caught up with me by the time we get to hear it, in which case, that may mean I'm into Wednesday over here already..and that would mean I'd have missed the entire programme!

Oh Boy....my head hurts... ;0)

Bruce, can you send me a copy, please..I think it may be the safest way... :0)
