Subject: BS: Out of the mouths of babes From: GUEST,Lighter Date: 11 Jun 09 - 09:54 AM Last night on Larry King, the new Miss California made one of the most astute political comments of the modern era. It was in the midst of a group discussion about what the dismissal of the old Miss California really meant. Larry asked, "How do *you* feel about same-sex marriage?" Tami Farrell's answer (I paraphrase slightly): "I don't think America should be turning to its beauty queens to set social policy." Everybody nodded sagely as though thinking "Hmm" in unison. |

Subject: RE: BS: Out of the mouths of babes From: frogprince Date: 11 Jun 09 - 12:53 PM I really hope that the original Miss California was honestly dumped for not going with the program she committed to, not because of flak over that answer. Disagreeing with her is one thing (I do). But her answer was honest, and as worded was nobody's hate speech. The "sight" of people getting out their witch-burning torches over it was disturbing. And having a replay show up as a top-headline item online was a glaring symptom of the level of a lot of media "journalism". |

Subject: RE: BS: Out of the mouths of babes From: Ebbie Date: 11 Jun 09 - 01:46 PM I'm curious. I've read that breast implants are standard gear in many beauty contestants and are not frowned upon. My question: Since improving/creating body lines upon by surgical artifice are OK how do the officials feel about plastic surgery? Whether facial or tummy tucks or unsightly bulges. If those procedures are OK, shouldn't the contests be between the surgeons? |

Subject: RE: BS: Out of the mouths of babes From: GUEST,leeneia Date: 11 Jun 09 - 02:21 PM It was a stupid question from the get-go. Why should it matter what anybody, beauty queen or not, feels about a topic? Feelings are no reason for controlling others. For example, I feel that getting lots of tattoos is a bad idea, but that doesn't give me the right to stop anybody from doing it. |

Subject: RE: BS: Out of the mouths of babes From: akenaton Date: 12 Jun 09 - 03:08 AM Isn't that just a shade simplistic? On this forum, we have a thread wich has run for months and attracted over 1500 posts, and you write off the arguments on both sides with a throw away one liner about tattoos. Sme people actually care about what happens to our society....and I include pro and anti "homosexual marriage" people in that. |

Subject: RE: BS: Out of the mouths of babes From: GUEST,Lighter Date: 12 Jun 09 - 06:19 PM Here are Tami Farrell's exact words. Not quite as snappy as I remembered, but she makes her point: "Well, I think -- honestly, I think that it's a personal decision and I think it's a civil rights issue. And I think it's something that we should let each state decide. I think it's silly, too, with all of this controversy right now, that the world is looking to beauty queens for the answer more than anything." Subject: RE: BS: Out of the mouths of babes From: Lox Date: 13 Jun 09 - 07:59 AM I think by comparing gay marriage to getting a tattoo, one aligns oneself with the freedom to choose camp. So they aren't likely to get upset - only the "make it illegal" camp, as they bekiev that it is not an issue of civil liberties but a matter of acceptable lifestyle, morality, ethics, taste etc etc. I personbally think the way it is compared to tattoos above sums up the whole point. Gay? wanna get married? ... ok ... nothing to do with me ... as long as you're happy I see no reason to get in your way. Into body art? want a tattoo? ... ok ... nothing to do with me ... (etc etc) So the only thing not taken seriously are objections to gay people getting married. And rightly so. |
