Dang that hurt, tried to ride my bike today and the de-railer came off locked up the back wheel ... lucky that the concrete broke my fall LOL

road rash on my knee, back isn't feeling all the great either. But sadly my bike is out to pasture more embarrassed then hurt

Riding my daughters new Mountain Bike(a Raleigh)about 20 years ago, I came flying around a corner to find a guy in a Duster backing out of a driveway. I hit the curb, going ass over tea-kettle. Ended up with road rash from my ankle right up to behind one ear. At the hospital, you can imagine my embarrassment when asked what kind of bike and I had to say "a pink 12 speed"!

You know, here's a funny thing, I was only thinking yesterday of what would happen if a speed camera caugt a bike going over the limit? More easily done that you think - particularly on long downhill urban 30mph zone.

I'd guess that my own most humiliating accident was when, while leaning over a water fountain to get a drink (with both feet on the ground), I didn't hold the front brake tightly enough, the wheel rolled out from under me, and I landed on the concrete head-first. Split my bike helmet right in half-lucky I was wearing one!

Sins, you and my Michael.........Lesssee now, Tris had just started riding (about 8 years old) and he and Michael (then age 7) went for a ride with Mommy. Tris was a little out of control still and he cut Karen off badly. She hit the curb and went down. I'm standing in garage when Mike rides back in and I ask where Mom and Tris are. He said Mom had a wreck and when I asked if she was okay and where they were, all he could do was laugh and finally get out, "Dad, it was really funny. When Mom wrecked, she rolled and rolled!"

As I head out Karen comes up the alley walking (badly) her bike with Tris sobbing. Tris is worried about Mommy but Mike again with the laughter said, Mom, it was really funny.....You really can roll." Even Karen laughed until two weeks later when blood clots were found in her lungs and she spent a full month in the hospital..........

Does it count if you're peacefully riding your bicycle and your brother grabs the handlebars, forcing you over the front and having the asphalt break off one and half front teeth? And not feeling pain you gather them up and drop them in your mother's hand while there are visitors in the house? And you do this the weekend before you start high school? And you don't get a permanent fix for ten years?

When I was in college I was riding downtown on my 10-speed, equipped with toe clips and straps. Ignoring the fact that I was riding in town, I had tightened up on my straps. I rolled up to a stop sign and only then realized I couldn't get my feet off the pedals. I felt like Arte Johnson on a bike. No damage done, fortunately, to anything except my ego.

Mrs Viking and I were into cycling up to about 4 years ago and want to get back in the saddle. The litle vikings were as well. One of our greatest bits of enjoyment apart from cycling to Germany and back along with other long distance rides was to go out on our tandem and make the speed camera flash near to where we lived. Little viking number 1 son would fly down the hill on his mountain bike and get the speed camera to flash on his own. Mrs V and I would do this on the flat, often getting up to about 45 mph. I remember number 1 son and I going downhill on a tandem in Wales at 65mph....very scary !!! But it had a drag brake fited as well.We did stop before the hard left hand bend. I remember riding down hill in Holland with little miss viking aged 7 on a trailer bike at nearly 50 and her squeeling with delight feet off her peddles feeling the wind. Mind you it took to curses and threats of making her walk up the hill to get her to assist peddling up to the top of the hill. I've been on me arse, me back and rolled into the gravel. Keep on the bike !!

Dave. The police have to identify you and if they can then you can be charged with speeding and if found guilty and you have a driving licence you get points on it as well as a fine. If you don't have a driving licence you don't get points.......sticks eh !! You can be done for being drunk in charge of a bicycle as well as any other moving traffic offence. We were always non identifiable when we set out to get the camera to flash. (This is not an admission of guilt, just in case there are realy boring people reading this)

Did any of the rest of you see the TV show with footage of the guy who tried to set a bicycle speed record by going down the side of a volcano? He first went down on a conventional mountain bike, to feel out the run. Then he got on his very high-tech custom bike and "went for it". Fortunately, he was padded up til he looked like a mountain gorilla. He got up to some hellacious speed, and the bike just disintegrated. Seeing him bouncing and pinwheeling down the slope like a rag doll, it was incredible to think he survived. As it was, he said that he was pretty much fully recovered by three years afterward. He is NOT planning on another attempt.

Sins - we must share a common ancester - I'm ashamed to say.

I have three vivid memories ( read post-traumatic flashbacks:>)

5 years old, at the home of family friends on a summer Sunday evening. They lived in town on the side of a ridge. Residential street is essentially a series of switchbacks, and they live on the downside. T'was riding a tricycle up on the street, and pulled off into the very steep driveway when a car came around the curve, lost my footing on the pedals, and kept going. I remember screaming bloody murder all the way down the driveway until I was stopped by the cinderblock wall at the back of the garage. I remember the promise of ice cream on the way to the ER. I remember the nice doctor who said not to feed me anything for awhile, including ice cream. I remember everyone frantically searching for my younger sister when we returned from the ER. She was found in tears hiding in a closet, thinking I had died.

About age 10, riding bicycles with the neighborhood kids up and down the street. We had a nice hill that would really let you pick up some speed. Was flying along, thrilled with the wind and speed. Neighbor boy who was only 2 years older but already 6' tall and close to 200 lbs steps out into the street without looking, immediately in front of me, and I run right into him. I go flying head-over-heels right over top of him. No trip to the ER that time, but I am banged and scraped from head to toe. He was so substantial and solid that it didn't even knock him down. He just stood there for a minute, shaking it off, then went and got my Mom.

Early twenties, a casual, side-by-side ride through a residential neighborhood with my boyfriend. I have always had major problems with "left" and "right". As we came up on an intersection, he said, "Go right here." So of course I turned left as he was turning right and we had a quite spectacular wreck that damaged both bikes and left both of us quite bloodied.

Bless his heart. All he said was, "I knew I should'a pointed."

Riding rapidly down our street on my tree-speed bike at about age 11, I decided to roll the wheels 1/2 way up the curved curb...an early attempt at trick riding. I found I could hold it and ride steadily with the wheels about 1/2 way up the curb radius I musta been doing about 30 when I got to the curve in the road where part of the curb that was missing a 1/2 foot section. I didn't see it till the last nano-moment.
The next thing I knew I was laying on the grass of the neighbors's lawn, glasses akimbo, me beaten to hell, and the handlebars twisted so far around that they lined up with the wheels and frame.
No permanent damage, but it put me off bicycle rodeoing for a time.

When my Amy was 11 she came home with her bike all bent to crap and skinned knees ... I said what happen ... she tells me the story while humming the wizard of Oz witch on the bike.   She said I was flying down the hill and some dumb lady opened their car door and i smucked it face first ...

On the NYS Thruway I saw a Cadilac hydroplane at 90 mph in the rain.
It glided into the meridian as the van I was in became nearly parallel with the Cadilac when it started to cart wheel in the grass.

What I thought was luggage spill out the back doors turned out to be a guy who ended up sliding on his butt doing nearly 90mph on the wet grass of the highway divider.

Time was reduced to slo mo as I looked into his eyes that were like saucers. Then both he and I stared at the car that had cart wheeled to the other side of the highway and take one last leap high into the air and land flat on the roof crushing the car down to the doors.

Then...

I lusted after a bike with Derailleur gears all through my childhood. Then, in my teens, when I could finally afford one, that lust was replaced by a couple of others.

The old Sturmey-Archer three-speed hub had to suffice.

Some driver here has just mopped up about twenty cyclists riding together. Rumour has it that it was deliberate. Sometimes a Time-Trial is extremely irritating to other road-users, but that is an extreme protest.
