Dan has a tux for the event and Gita has a beautiful purple dress for the actual Grammys on the Sunday - Dan's been keeping us updated on Facebook.

Let me be very clear. What is really important is that I can say "Hey, Lookee me! I have friends who were producers of an album that were nomimonimateded fer a Grammy. Ain't that the cat's meow!"


And when I show 'em pitchurs I expect all ya'll to look the part. Kendall definitely has nailed "the look." Even better than Lauren Becall. The rest of youse has now a standard to reach or surpass. Gonna be hard to do, even sans the ponytail.

Silliness aside, I am so glad for all involved with this wonderful album, proud of those of you that I have a personal acquaintance with (some of you well enough to love), and especially pleased with what the nomination itself means in terms of recognition of Utah Phillips and his importance and impact (related, but not synomyns) on music and important sociocultural reflections and issues indigenous to these united states. Utah himself stands as a metaphor for the power and effectiveness of song, in general, and folk music, in particular, as messenger of real people in real times.

I just got my CD in the mail a day or two ago, and I am not at all surprised it got a Grammy nod! SO many wonderful songs, so many great performances!

I haven't even had time to digest them all, but Dan's rendition of "Queen Of The Rails" practically has me in tears every time. Then Mick singing "Hallelujah! I'm A Bum!"* just makes me break out grinnin'!   And all the other wonderful songs from Utah and others, performed so freakin' well!

Youse guys have done yerse'ves an' Utah PROUD!

"Hallelujah! I'm A Bum" may be "Traditional" where lyrics are concerned but the melody is borrowed from the hymn "Revive Us Again," which has known authorship (which I'm too lazy to look up at this hour of the morning).

I shall have my own style - recycled eccentric.

We're setting off for Boston on the 8.30am coach out of Portland, on Friday. We will arrive in LA at about 7.00pm their time, 10.00pm EST.

Saturday morning at 6.00am I will get a wake up call from John McDonald, who has a morning radio programme in the Portland area, for a live report from LA and from then on it will probably be a busy weekend.

I am so glad that Kendall's surgery isn't happening until the 16th February - at least, next week, we will have time to decompress properly.

Pretty close to the same deal with us - we're getting in at 5 in LA, I think.

As far as winning - while it would be nice, I don't really expect it to happen. Every album nominated this year is exceptional, and some have received very wide recognition. That doesn't mean our album isn't good or deserving - just that the other are also good and deserving.

The way I look at it, we're not going to collect an award (though all nominees do get medallions - when would you wear it, that's what I want to know) but to celebrate the album, Utah's legacy and basically have a lot of fun doing something way over the top.

Jacqui, it wouldn't matter what you wore. The light in your eyes will outshine any diamond, ruby or sequin bedecked nominees. And that's the truth!!

This is a Facebook message I got from Rik Palieri, who put together the wonderful YouTube production of Singing Through The Hard Times.


Jacqui, As I said in today's interview this CD was a gift for all of us. Something we all did because we cared about Utah and his music. Now with this press we are also sending out a message to the big world of music, that our home grown music is also important and deserves recognition.

Utah was such a great mentor and friend who always was trying to help us with the trade. Now it seems like once again Utah is sending us his helping hand, helping us all to grow.

When I set up all the pictures and memorabilia, I also lit a candle in his memory . There was a powerful feeling in that room. I was so happy that I had the chance to tell his story and our story with this wonderful project. So many thanks to you Jacqui, Kendall and Dan for making this all come together.

Have a great time in LA, and no matter what happens we are all ready winners as we had the chance to honor our dear friend and bring his music to many new listeners!

I think that, like Utah's music, this award is for all of us who love the 'homegrown' music.
