I was calmly reading the PPH yesterday and suddenly, there was a picture of KENDALL with the words Grammy nominee under it!!! Yahoo! I am proud the Grammy nominee will come to my house on Saturday to celebrate my husband's inauguration as mayor -- Sins- hope you will be there too,,,,,

You three - everyone involved with the recording - have done such a fine thing, picking up not just the legend but the *content* of the legend and passing it on, picking up a beloved friend's lifework and passing it on.

[Still, UUP, moved and humbled though he'd likely be for a few moments, would be silent only so long. Whatever he came out with, wise or irreverent (or likely both), it'd be right. It'd be pointed. I wish we could hear it.]

We certainly weren't thinking of awards! We figured we'd be lucky if we could cobble together the funds to put out the little CD-R we thought we'd come up with.

I'm not sure, Art. Rik put it all together form the over 200 pictures sent to him. There were a LOT of pictures of Bruce, the best being from Duncan.

It was interesting to see Utah Phillips referred to as a Unitarian. I'm guessing that it's something he adopted fairly late in life. I met Utah in 1971 and spent some time with him occasionally over the years and never heard him speak of any religious beliefs. He always called himself an anarchist said an anarchist was anyone "who didn't need a cop to tell him what to do," or who knew to do the right thing because it was the right thing to do. "Cops," he would say, aren't just the police, they're anyone who imposes their view and way of doing things on others. Certainly that includes all organized religion.

The only time I ever heard Utah speak of Unitarians was in a joke about raising money to send a poor Unitarian kid to camp...if you can find one.

He made a lot of jokes about it, but he was part of several different congregations over 40 years in the various places he lived.

One of the reasons he liked UUs is that we don't impose our views on others, and we have a wide diversity of beliefs. In his words: "This is a spiritual family, which I have chosen, and this is a family which will not and does not make rules for me. This is the family, which says to all of us — enjoins all of us — to think with the mind that we have, and not the one we're supposed to have."

On the Starlight on the Rails CD he talks about writing "Hymn Song" at the behest of his manager, and telling the manager that he was a Unitarian.

I remember him doing a concert at Passim in Cambridge, MA, where he talked about singing folk songs at his Unitarian Universalist congregation. "We're religious liberals," he said, "so we sing liberal folk songs - like 'Which Side Am I On' and 'I Would Rather Not Be Moved.'"

Utah knew the value of not taking things too seriously - even the things dear to him.

Just for amusement's sake, I checked out the Utah Phillips section in not one but two local music stores in the area. Two weeks ago, they both had at least a dozen copies of Singing Through the Hard Times. This week, not a one to be found. I think the local article on Kendall may have caused a run on them...
