Last nights Prairie Mome Companion closed circuit telecast incuded a Utah Phillips song. The hopeful gospel Quartet (Garrison Keeler , Heather Masse , Robin and Linda Williams)with Pat Donahue on Guitar performed "Walking through your town in the snow" I'm not sure if that's the correct title, I've never heard this song before.
The whole 2 hr + broadcast was the usual mixture of great music and old time radio humor. It was preceded by Garrison giving a 1/2 hr tour of the area around the theatre in St. Paul. It ended with Garrison doing a version of The Parting Glass. I dont know if or when this will be broadcast on the radio, but it was indicated there will be an encore broadcast at selected theatres on Feb 9.

"Walking Through Your Town In the Snow" is one of his 50 or 60 most beautiful songs! You can hear him sing it on the Starlight On the Rails 4 CD set.

Buy the CD!

I've got the CD. Funny thing, this "songbook" doesn't have printed lyrics. And since Mudcat is a lyrics site, wouldn't it be nice to have the lyrics posted?

Strangest thing - I had this running through my head this morning.

WALKING THROUGH YOUR TOWN IN THE SNOW
(Bruce "Utah" Phillips)

I'm walking through your town in the snow,
I'm walking through your town in the snow,
I got no place to go, all the trains are running slow
And I'm walking through your town in the snow

I carry my home on my back,
I carry my home on my back,
But the police only frown, every time I lay it down,
And I'm walking through your town in the snow

Don't these little winter towns all look the same,
Don't these little winter towns all look the same,
The freezing winds may blow, and the mission doors are closed
And I'm walking through your town in the snow

It's getting late and all the bars are closed,
It's getting late and all the bars are closed,
It's so cold that I can't think, and I could really use a drink
And I'm walking through your town in the snow

There's some fellas jungled up in the yard,
There's some fellas jungled up in the yard,
They're cook'in up down there, but I've nothing I can share
And I'm walking through your town in the snow

Maybe I could rustle up a job,
Maybe I could rustle up a job,
But there's nothing I could do, my best working days are through
And I'm walking through your town in the snow

Don't think I'll ever find my way back home,
Don't think I'll ever find my way back home,
I can see my golden years, shinning through the frozen tears

I'm walking through your town in the snow,
I'm walking through your town in the snow,
I got no place to go, all the trains are running slow
And I'm walking through your town in the snow
