The Revels sing it......         "I like to hear them small birds singing, merrily among their lay-lows."    Different, but no help in meaning.          Seems to imply low bushes. Need an English colloquial specifically regional expert.

The skylark, in particular - but not exclusuvely, likes to nest in meadows - ley land - put to grass.

I can remember sorting out this one before (Leyland) when people were asking what the hell a Laylum is.

Hopefully, someone will come along and post the link soon and we'll all be able to go back to sleep or sing real words again instead of misheard ones (mondegreens).
