Seems like I mighta asked this before but if I did I don't remember the answer...

Here's the situation... The P-Vine has found a woman to come in and do housework a couple times a month... The problem is that at 6 o'clock this mornin' the P-Vine woke me up with a demand that I start doing housework for the lady who is going to be here next week??? I don't undertand this logic...

I mean, if we are payin' this woman to do housework then how comes I gotta do it before she gets here???

Can ya'll womenz answer me that simple question???

Not that I expect you are looking for a serious answer, but way back when I could afford such a thing as a cleaning person (long time ago now), I learned that you don't want them putting your stuff away or sorting stuff for you, or you're liable to lose track of things you love or need. (I had to go through the trash after one decided to get rid of all the little jewelry boxes I kept on my bureau. Another one tended to throw out bills with the junk mail. A third completely ignored all the things that really needed cleaning and did my dishes for me, leaving them to drain on some fancy paper napkins I'd bought for the party I was about to give, all carefully unfolded and laid across every surface in my kitchen.)

You want them to clean (scrub, vacuum, polish...), not tidy, which means they have to be able to get to the surfaces in your house without being distracted by clutter...which means YOU have to tidy.

Drag, isn't it?

Our cleaner can be counted on to put anything left on the kitchen counter in the oddest possible places, so the kitchen must be tidy before she comes. Likewise shoes and boots left in the front hall -- if I don't put them where they belong, she will stash them. If I ever find them again, it's purely by accident.

Besides, I want the cleaner to spend her time doing the stuff I hate to do and don't have time for -- i.e., vacuuming and washing floors, and scrubbing bathroom fixtures. That means doing the tidying up myself.

I once had a live-in cleaning lady - she was homeless; I wasn't wealthy.

So she decided to arrange the kitchen according to her needs - I am still looking for a beloved bowl and a certain spatula.

Then we make the same deal every time we get the dining room table uncluttered that "we'll" keep it that way... Then two weeks go by and it filled again with...

...you guessed iT... Her stuff!!!

But seriously, she had me vacuumin' this morning... Ain't that fall in the category of cleanin'??? And she wants mne to, ahhhhh, dust her clutter this weekend??? I mean, for gosh sakes!!! Clean clutter??? What am I missing here???

I know, "Just do it and shut the heck up, Boberdz!!!"

And, yes, I did go to Massanutten and we had inpsections once a week and then pop inspections now and then and yer stuff had to be put away and clean all the time...

But I am wonderin' what this cleaning women is gonna do if the P-Vine works my boney fingers to the bone cleaning for the next week???

I got one. My x useta say I should pitch in more (I did laundry, cookin, vacuuming, mopping, dishes... you name it... AND I, ME, MOIS, JIMMY SUIS, did the buildin, fixin, tree cuttin, snow shovelin... I even paid for and fixed stuff she broke after I told her not to do what she was doin on accounta it would break what she was doin it to.) so I would ask her "what"? When I got, "I dunno, look around.", I shoulda known she would be an x.

All that supposition above makes me wonder what the hell you all womenz are thinkin when you say Bobert oughta do the job he's payin ta have done.

I'd have to agree with Sorcha -- that kind of "cleaning for the cleaning lady" seems over the top, Unless there's some specific huge, hideous cleaning task your cleaning person has been hired to do, and having to dust & vacuum would only be a distraction from the much more serious task at hand...

That said, best get on with it or you might be sorry.

Must admit, suffering as I do from from single male syndrome (dust and cobwebs tend to be invisible), I could probably benefit from the attentions of a good cleaning lady. But most of the time, the bits that need cleaning - furniture tops, carpet, in fact just about any horizontal surface - are barely visible, let alone accessable. De-cluttering so as to make cleaning a realistic exercise, just ain't worth the bother.

What I aim to do though, being a passable cook or so my friends tell me, is give a dinner party every month or so. At least it motivates me to get the place looking half civilised....

Oh dear... I must admit, I am "clutterblind" and "dustblind" and such. Never used to be, but since I was set free some ten years ago, my eyesight has waned drastically. Soooo, here's the story...

A couple of years ago, George and Shirley stopped by on their way back to Newfoundland. Normally, I would do all the cooking for guests but that just ain't the way it's done by Newfs. Shirley made us drinks and served us in the dining room and we were not allowed in the kitchen, except when I was to locate sommat for her.

And she was cleaning... my teacup, which I had spent years coating was spotless... the salt and pepper shakers were new again... I could go on, but...

I called Mum to check up an her and invite her for a feast. She declined and asked how things were going. I told her we were having a grand time, the kitchen aroma was almost overpowering, and that Shirley was cleaning things I didn't even know were dirty.

Guilty as charged.

No, Tam... The P-Vine is a Carolina girl which prolly expalins alot of her, shall we say, quirks...

So I have spent the entire day cleaning the mud-room which is supposed to be a place where you can take yer boots off and put on house shoes but...

...the P-Vine has turned it into a barn, sans the farm animals... Yup an entire truck load of garden related stuff came outta there today... I mean, musta been 35 half full (empty) bags of fertilizers, potting soil, African Violet potting soil, well over a hundred bottles of slug killers, Brush-B-Gone (at least 8 unopened bottles), Miracid, etc, etc...

And I'm wonderin' the entire time if the P-Vine is going to have the cleaning lady dust that wreck of a room??? No matter... It looks good as it usually does for a week... The P-Vine promised to keep it like this... Vegas has it 7-4 it will be back to looking like Fiber McGee's barn within 30 days...

But I loves the girl even if she is a clutterbug and a nut...

I am a cleaning lady. One of the million or so things people I work for do that drives me crazy is cluttering up a space and getting angry if I move things. Tidying is a good idea before a cleaning lady comes. I don't throw out paper, unless I'm 100% sure it's nothing you want to save. Others aren't as particular.

You don't have to worry about dirt. I assure you the cleaning lady has seen worse. She will be ready to canonize you if you clean your damn hair out of the damn drain, instead of leaving it for her to deal with. If you also throw out your used dental floss she will be your friend for life.

I cleaned for one biddy who would make my life hell for weeks because her daughters didn't come home for Passover. Another would threaten to fire me every time she had a bad day at work. One old dear had a minor conniption because I threw out one of her toothpicks. She was the one who put her grandchildren on my case.
One of the ladies I no longer work for made a couple of passes at me. (Even if I was gay, she wouldn't be my type.)
One woman had me take the astroturf off her front porch.
The woman I worked for on Friday is disabled, and can't do much, besides fuss at me. Her husband does the laundry. He does it with an ill grace and crams all the clean clothes any which way into the baskets. Meaning stuff that shouldn't need ironing does. Want to guess who gets to iron it all?
Oh, the other thing, I know a whole lot about the people I work for. I get to watch family quarrels, clean up after parties, overhear phone calls, and then there's all the stuff they really shouldn't tell me, but they do. I keep most of it quiet. (Sometimes, like when the guy brought home 6 lava lamps and his girlfriend went ballistic, it's just too good to keep to myself.) Be kind to your cleaning lady. She knows your dirt.

Bobert, all the good ones seem to be like that. They don't want ANYONE to think they are excessively dirty about the house, and especially someone who cleans for a job. The logic may be, SHE knows who's dirty.
Just put clutter away. Makes it easier to clean. As has been said above.

Bobert, P-Vine does not want to show another woman, that she is not taking care of business in the home....rather, she would want to 'impress' the cleaning woman that she, herself is a good housekeeper! 'Womenz' are very competitive creatures when it comes to their own kind!

I know a woman who watches the 'cooking' channels and 'food networks' a WHOLE LOT, EVERY DAY, but her husband goes to the local gas station/convenient store about EVERY day, to get biscuits and gravy for breakfast,...comes home and makes himself 'Top Raman'....however, if there is an occasion where other women are providing food, and she is, too...she is the best damn cook on the planet.......go figure!

Biscuits as in US Southern style biscuits, with sausage gravy on top. Yes, it sounds disgusting, but it is very tasty. Probably extremely bad for you, but very tasty. I've only had the real thing once, being from the northeast US, but it was really good.

Well, GfS... The P-Vine is another one who watches the cooking shows... Iron Chef, Emrile, Paula Dean, Giatta are always on her TEVO (or whatever that thingis that records shows)... The difference is that the P-Vine was a great "country cook" (Eastern Carolina, yummy) before the shows...

Now, truthfully speakin', I had never given an thought to the "competetive" aspect... Yeah, I understand that might be part of it... But all the cleaing lady would have to do is look at the P-Vine's desk or open her closet and the truth would be known... My closet or desk??? Very civilized...

I guess my problem is having to vaccum carpets just before the claening lady gets here or scrub my bathroom??? That seem counter-productive but what the hell I know??? I'm just the male in the house, right???

Every week when I go to Mum's to vacuum, scrub, mop... I vacuum first. That's when she disappears into the washroom. Every week, the toilet is spotless.

A lot of women are more concerned about their appearance to OTHER women, more that the tone they set for their own home, or the quality of companionship they bring to their husbands! A great many women of this this last generation of women are deluded in thinking they have a sense of entitlement!
I'm sure a lot of the womenfolk don't like hearing, or admitting this but it is absolutely true! Along with that, they are more interested in hiding behind, their 'rights' as a woman....which usually is self defeating, because their 'rights' make a lonely companion!....it's all the guy's fault......they think! It's a form of self absorbency!!

I was always fascinated by people who were rude to the cleaning lady. I had a husband/wife team who would super clean my place every six months. The wife came every other week. My deal with her was I paid $50 for the cleaning. If she got it done in an hour or ten hours was up to her. So she was happy and I was happy.
I recommended her to a neighbor who had a fit when her house was spotlessly cleaned in less than two hours. She felt it wasn't right for the cleaning lady to make more money that she did. She added blinds, windows, etc. to the list and lost the cleaning lady. I lived happily with my arrangement and her husband showed up periodically and did any heavy cleaning that needed doing no charge.
On Sept 11th I came home in shock and found her cleaning the house. I was dumbfounded and asked didn't she know what was going on. She thought she had to finish cleaning. I sent her off to find her husband and son and get home safely. A beautiful lady. I hated leaving her when I came to Maine.
Wish I could afford a cleaning lady these days. Ah well.

I'm with you, Bobert. Putting away your stuff you don't want put elsewhere when the cleaning lady comes is reasonable--and you say you already do that..   But vacuuming--that's absurd.

Jan does the vacuuming herself since she's convinced the cleaning lady (Brenda) has wrecked one and maybe two vacuum cleaners by either dragging or dropping them up- and downstairs. She also says there's hardly anything different after the cleaning lady leaves--she does virtually no cleaning.   But she's a neighbor and a friend.   That's a real problem.   And she does give very entertaining and dramatic weather forecasts.

I've tried several times to convince Brenda to try to get a foot in the door with the government since it's hiring now-for the census, for so-called Transportation Safety, etc--I've even given her announcements and contact numbers. And it won't be hiring forever. She always has a reason why she can't make a move. But she's one who desperately needs a good health care plan--and with the government she could get one. Not with her current dead-end job. And she's already been fired by several other neighbors.

I have met grits (YEEEECCCCCHHHHH)and "biscuits" (which seem to be like a sorta savoury scone) but what the heck is sausage Gravy and how is it different from Bisto?

First of all, Micca my friend... Sausage garve is made from pork... In the South when they ask if you want gravy it's chicken gravy... As for Virginia Bobert??? Keep guessin...

I love southern biscuits and gravy. Just so there is no grits on them! I even got invited to a cookout of Ham hocks and Collard greens once. Good cracker!

Well, Kendall... Grits is good fir ya'... But they need lotta butter and pepper 'er they don't taste right...

Now, GfS... I watched the first one... Took half and hour when I coulda been doing nuthin' fir the sumabich to load... Grrrrrrr??? But...

...I didn't get none of it!!! Especially that womanz stuff... Like how can they be thinkin' of that many stuffz and function???

Hey, me and the P-Vine spent the entire day on the road getting ajmterial fir a job I'm doin' an', yeah, I must admit that they is crazy... I mean, just like the movie guy said... I mean, it was all this crazy energy in their brains thinkin' of way too much stuff???

yeah, I like the box idea... But that sumabichin' stuff in there, close th lid on it and leave it the heck alone... 'Er better yet, thake the sumabichin' box to the landfill and watch to make sure that the bulldozer crushes it...

Okay, I'm an empty (or crushed) box kinda guy... But that box stuff ain't all it's cracked up to be...

I was gonna get the P-Vine to come in an' watch this but she'd then make me play "20 Questions" until she'd worn my poor boney hillbilly butt out... Not in the mood... Think I'll just get in some quality remote time... An' chill...

Sausage gravy....brown PORK sausage meat (salt, cilantro, pepper, if you Brits want a real recipe I can provide one).

Add white flour to coat sausage, add milk. Bring to a simmer til thick. Serve over American style biscuits (unsweetened scones....about an inch or so thick, and split).

Serve with hash browns. (grated/shredded potatoes cooked in oil/fat til crunchy) If you make hash browns from raw potatoes, put the shreds in a colander and wash all the starch off, then dry well.

Grits is good, but only when THICK like real porridge. This runny soupy grits thing is nasty. You should almost be able to cut grits with a butter knife...thick!

Grits is nasty but it ain't the taste. It's the texture.

Personally, I sorta like biscuits and gravy.....but before you dump on the gravy (sausage), I like to pour a little pork green chili over the biscuits...then the gravy, and a little cheese on top.......

My dad's family brought out an old Southern custom, he said, of putting butter and sugar on baking powder biscuits which he cooked on a Sunday morning once in awhile. To this day, none of us puts gravy on any of our biscuits. We eat cornbread the same way. Yummy!

Bobert, I know it makes no sense, but for me it comes down to not wanting another person to see just how awful my house can get in need of cleaning. When we could afford her, we had a nice gal come in twice per month to do the floors only. She was good, but paid by the hour and a little slow, usually because she and I found so much to talk about!:-) Finally had to let her go due to finances and we've remained friends, seeing each once in awhile, but I would scrub the toilet before she came over because it grossed me out to think of ANYONE sticking their hands in there and scrubbing it out, which is what my cleaning lady, who also became a friend, did in WY, with gloves on, but it still grossed me out.

Having a cleaning lady in is almost like having company coming...one needs to tidy up a bit before they get there!:-)

Well, Friday is the big day so I've been given a new list of things to attend to...

As fir grits??? If'n ya'll folks who hates 'um would just leave them in the pot until more water cooks out then they get a different texture... We call it the "Yankee Texture" (lol) but it becomes more solid and less runny... Personally I like 'um runny...

Biscuits... Gravy 'er not... Good fir ya'...
