This is a beautiful song from Chad Mitchell's solo effort. I can't get some of the lyrics.   If anyone knows the right ones please fix them for me.

Thanks

Don

The Wild Plainsmen's Kind

Round us up cowboys we'll go to the fair
The ladies with brows poised and seeming sincere
Its a time for forgetting our woes and rough care
While the white sun is setting in the snares of their hair

Mostly we laugh Boys is poison
But tonight we won't argue just dance
And lassoed by charms in the joys or their arms
We pursued them to sit and romance in the stands

We drank lots of whiskey and we offered free wine
We were spurred to touch this knee and that knee so fine
Still our hearts held securely when she breathed please be mine
We explained so demurely we're the wild plainsmen's kind

Great ghosts like the wind followed joys in
We ordered the ponies to prance
And in quiet alarm yearned some for a farm
Yet gone with dust in a glance that's the chance

Round us up cowboys we'll go to the fair
The ladies with brows poised and seeming sincere
Its a time for forgetting our woes and rough care
While the white sun is setting in the snares of their hair

Hi Don,
Would love to hear this song. Which album is this on? I've got Chad Mitchell Himself, and it isn't on that one.

Thanks!

Hi, don-
I've got the composers listed as J. Palmer/L. Weiser/W. Chad Mitchell. I have problems understanding it, too. Here's what I hear:

THE WILD PLAINSMEN'S KIND
(J. Palmer/L. Weiser/W. Chad Mitchell)

Round us up cowboys, we'll go to the fair
The ladies with brows poised will seem insincere
It's a time for forgetting our woes and rough care
While the wild sun is setting in the snares of their hair

Mostly we laugh, [Boys is boys, huh?] - ?????
But tonight we won't argue just dance
And lassoed by charms in the joys of their arms
We persuade them to sin and romance [in the stands] [I have no idea]

We drank lots of whiskey and we offered free wine
We were spurred to touch this knee and that knee so fine
Still our hearts held securely when she breathed please be mine
We explained so demurely we're the wild plainsmen's kind

[bridge]
Great ghosts like the wind followed joys in
We ordered the horses to prance
And in quiet alarm yearned some for a farm
Yet gone with the dust in a glance that's the chance

Round us up cowboys we'll go to the fair
The ladies with brows poised and seeming sincere
Its a time for forgetting our woes and rough care
While the white sun is setting in the snares of their hair

from the Chad Mitchell solo album, Virgo Moon

P.S. I freely acknowledge what some of my interpretations are preposterous, but that's what I hear.

It is in many ways a great song. And the melody has a wonderful quality
but don't you think someone could listen to song besides the singer a determine that it is ready to go before the recording is released?

My conclusions seemed preposterous as well.

seeming sincere or seem insincere

Boys is poison or Boys is boys, Huh.

pursued them to sit and romance in the stands or We persuade them to sin and romance [in the stands] (Actually I had pursuade, I just misspelled it)

Great ghosts like the wind followed joys in (Makes the least sense of all.

Still I want to do this song. tHanks for the effort Joe. I appreciate it muchly.   No to work on the chords which sound straight forward at least.

Hi Joe and anyone else,

If you know this song at all try these chords and tell me what you think. The only one I question as a placement is the second Cmin. I like the sound there but it may be not in the song, just in my imagination. And the second line seems to need more chords but worked fine with what I have.

I have it in "G" shapes but I capo up to 4 and place it in Bb.

Guess I won't be hearing this song anytime soon. Looked for the CD online, and I can get a used copy for only $42.50! If you record it, Don, I'd like to buy your recording!

I think the lyrics could use some "folk processing." The "snares of their hair..." is not an enticing image!)

Thanks,

I agree with Don. Rhymesterbation. I think a lot of those guys back then did lots of drugs and then just made stuff rhyme. For some, this led to a lot of accidental beauty and unexpected meaning, but for others, it seemed more like they did a lot of drugs and made stuff rhyme.

I think the right word might be "trite". I'll also say that it's hard to judge a song when I haven't heard it--the tune may redeem a lot of problematic writing, but the feeling that the authors were just trying too hard would be hard to shake.

If it's that great a tune, I'd just re-write the whole song. Tune © whomever, words © whomever, new words © you.

(Sorry I'm grumpy, but I have a waning migraine, and I came close to "put the proud ponies in pants," and "I knew if I had the chance, I could make those ponies dance..." (in France) Thank goodness I didn't do THAT!)

I, too, would like to hear it sometime.

What I'm getting:

"Its a time for forgetting our woes and rough cares."
"Still our hearts held securely when she pleads please be mine" (screwed up tense, but that's what I hear)
"We ordered the ponies" is "We ordered the horses" second time.
"We persuade them to sin in romance, askance"
"Boys is boys, huh" MIGHT be "poise is poison"

Good luck!

They didn't manage to get "France" in there, or "pants", but there's time...

Two bridges, and you noticed that the first:
Mostly we laugh, poise is poison
But tonight we won't argue just dance
And lassoed by charms in the joys or their arms
We pursued them to sin in romance, askance
rhymes with the second:
Great ghosts like the wind followed joys in
We ordered the ponies to prance
And in quiet alarm yearned some for a farm
Yet gone with dust in a glance that's the chance
You could add a third:

We asked "What's that sauce," they said "hoisin"
We queried "Does that come from France?"
They said "No, if you please, I believe it's Chinese"
"Give it to the ants that advance up my pants!"

Yeah, it's stupid, but then, I can see the song being written on a bet: write a song based around "the ants in France don't wear any pants," (or whatever it is) but don't use any of those words.

Sorry.

The oddest thing Jeri is your verse makes better sense than the originals.

Great ghosts like the wind followed joys in
We ordered the ponies to prance
And in quiet alarm yearned some for a farm
Yet gone with dust in a glance that's the chance.

Thats what I hear as well. Does it make sense to you or do you hear barely related sentences?

Great ghosts like the wind followed joys in
They had a great time in the town, but were haunted by memories of those who weren't there
We ordered the ponies to prance
We hit the road
And in quiet alarm yearned some for a farm
Yet gone with dust in a glance that's the chance.
We surprised ourselves with how much we could want to settle down, but it wasn't gonna happen.

Of course, I can make sense of Jabberwocky too.

Hi Don and Jeri,

I thought perhaps these were quotations from some famous poem, but ..... Star Trek: the Next Generation!?! ROFL

So perhaps the lyrics for this song aren't too impressive, but if its a good tune, I'd still like to hear your version some day, Don. One reason I love traditional songs much more than recent singer/songwriter songs is because the tunes are polished gems!

Hi Linda,

They are from the episode "Darmok". I don't know which of us was the more surprised. Jeri that I'd know or even remember such a line from a show so long ago. Or me for getting such a fast and proper reply from Jeri.

Apparently "....when the walls fell...." shows up often on World or War Craft.

I have a world of obscure movie and TV references in my head.

This song was written by friends of mine whom I know in high school. I had made a demo of this song in 1975, after singing it for almost 3 years, and gave a copy of it to Chad around that time when I first met him.
Years passed, and I guess he had no way of contacting me when he decided to record it. I was still recording in those days, but moving around quite a bit and there was no Internet yet, so...
I was happy to hear that he recorded it, but knew ultimately that the writers, especially Larry Weiser, who now goes by the name of Larry Navon, because he wrote the lyrics. I have reconnected with Chad, and apparently the lyrics were not completely clear to him on the demo, so a bit of improvisation was necessary, which is why I am assuming he added his name as a writer when he copyrighted the song himself.
I am happy, for the record, to be posting the true and accurate lyrics here, as they were meant to be, by Larry Navon.

THE WILD PLAINSMEN'S KIND

Round us up cowboys
We'll go to the fair
The ladies with brows poised
Will seem insincere
It's the time for forgetting
Our woes and rough cares
While the wild sun is setting In the snares of their hair

Mostly we'd laugh "poise is poison"
But tonight we won't argue just dance
And lassoed by charms In the joys of their arms
We'll persuade them to sin in romance askance

We drank lots of whiskey
And offered free wine
Were spurred to touch this knee
And that knee so fine
Still our hearts kept securely
When she pleads please be mine
We explained so demurely
We're the wild plainsmen's kind

Great ghosts like the wind follow joys in
We ordered the horses to prance
And in quiet alarm
Yearned some for a farm
Yet go doff our hats "that's the chance"

Round us up cowboys

Lyrics L P Navon (formerly L. Weiser)
Music J Palmer
early 1970s

It gives me great pleasure to clear this up. :-)))
