I am familiar with the large "dead" vote in some cities ( Like Chicago, under Democratic 'machine'), but here the deceased WON the election.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Deceased Democrat Defeats Republican for State Senate Seat

Special election expected within the next three to four months.

By ERIN RICHARDS
Updated 7:13 AM PDT, Wed, Nov 3, 2010

AP With 100 percent of the precincts reporting, deceased candidate, Democrat Jenny Oropeza, defeated Republican John Stammreich in the race for State Senate in the 28th district.

Oropeza, 53, died on Oct. 20. Because her death was within 10 days of the election, her name remained on the ballot.

The governor now has two weeks to declare her seat empty, and schedule a special election within three to four months. This allows Democrats a chance to find a new candidate to run for Oropeza's seat.

A week after her death, Democrats sent out mailers to residents, calling for voters to still reelect Oropeza. The mailers featured Secretary of State Debra Bowen and Democratic Party general counsel Martha Escutia.

Eminently sensible. What would you have done Jucie Brucie - handed it to the Tea Party by default? Well silly me, of course you would.

It may however offer a small hope that the Tea Party will have started to look like fules on the hill already by the next ballot time.

Just think how exciting the candidate debates would be!

So, Bruce, what would you suggest that voters should have done in this particular race, elect somebody they didn't want, simply because he was breathing?

There are laws that prevent dead people from running for office - but if the person dies after the nomination process has begun, what should be done?

How about a rational answer for a change, instead of your usual partisan propaganda? What was your purpose in starting this thread in the first place, other than to allow us to demonstrate that the voters believe that a dead Democrat is better than an extremist Republican?

-Joe-

I would suggest that there be a write in, or even that the voter look at the Republican instead of voting strictly by party.
IF we had None of The Above, then I would think that might be best.

There were a number of positions on the ballot here that ONLY had Democratic candidates- Because the Republicans did not have a qualified candidate, should I complain that it was not fair?

I think being dead makes it difficult to perform the functions of the office.

But if a person is no longer qualified to run, SHOULD they remain on the ballot?

What if they had committed some crime, that would disqualify them, but were not convicted until after the nomination? Would you still be commenting?

And if it had been a Republican , would there be such a defensive reaction? - It looks to me like "How about a rational answer for a change, instead of your usual partisan propaganda? " MIGHT apply to several other posts here, as well.

Why is it that you only seem to comment like this when YOU do not AGREE with the "Partisan Propaganda"?

Well, Bee Bee- Being brain dead doesn't seem to be a disqualification for Republican candidates like Palin, Paul, Sharron Angle or Christine O'Donnell.

I'd personally take a dead Democrat over a live Tea-Bagger Bushite any day.

Well, Bruce, all of your suggestions tilt the election toward at least a plurality for YOUR candidate. Better to elect a dead candidate and force a new election to determine what the voters actually want. If the voters actually wanted the Republican more than the dead woman, they were free to vote for her.

*grin*...obviously, the majority wanted a Democrat. I'm sure 'most' voter knew of the death. If she had died today, the special election would still be the likely response. This still gives **Republicans** time to find a qualified candidate...and gives them a 2nd chance! Such a deal!

I have a hunch, Bruce, that you might feel differently if it were a dearly departed Republican.

Hey, better a dead Democrat than a live Republican! ; D

Seriously, this same thing happened a while back (in the 2000 election), when Missouri's Democratic incumbent governor (or was it Senator?) Mel Carnahan was killed in a plane crash shortly before the election. He went on to beat John Ashcroft - who was still alive enough to be appointed to Bush's cabinet - in the general election.   His widow, Jean (sp?) then filled his seat. (I think she was appointed at first, then later confirmed via election.)

Now, look, folks...there are definite pluses to electing a dead politician, and number one is:

A dead politician can do far less HARM in office than a live one can! If Tony Blair had been dead when elected, the UK would not have gone to war in Iraq. If Nixon had been dead when elected, Watergate would never have happened. If Reagan had been dead (physically speaking, I mean...) when elected we might never have had Iran-Contra.

I pointed this out to Chongo. He cocked his head, squinted, thought about it some, and then said, "Ya know, that's right! Geez, I'd never have thought of it...I bet a lot more folks would vote for dead candidates if they gave it some thought."

"But..." he added with a sly grin, "don't count on me offin' myself just to improve the odds in 2012!"

I was just thinking, they could convene Congress by having the Speaker solemnly ring a bell when it starts and intone: "Bring out your dead!" Then everyone could stagger in, zombie-like, and get on with the daily bilgeroar...and the press could stagger over, zombie-like, and ask the standard questions when it's done. Then the public could tune in, zombie-like, for the sound bites in the evening. YUM!

There were various dead candidates this year. I heard of a couple in my area(s) within just a few days of the election. This is the first one I heard that won, though.

There's not enough time to reprint ballots, obviously, and undoubtedly there were voters who did not get the news. For those who did, in this case, voting for the dead candidate was exactly the same as "none of the above".

Right, Bill D., Obama has REALLY tried bi-partisanship. Example: in a recent speech he pronounced that if Republicans wanted to join his happy group of liberals in his quest to transform our country into one more in tune with his liking, they could sit in the back of the bus. That's a real effort to bring the two Parties together.

Our arrogant president is going to soon get his come-uppance when he finds he can't ram legislation the majority of the country doesn't want through the congress.

Of course he won't worry too much about that as he is escorting 3,000 burearcrats through a tour of India and other Indonesia countries utilizing 40 airplanes, two helicopters and two teleprompters, costing 200 million dollars a day. I wonder how many jobs might be generated by 200 million dollars a day for eleven days?

We have not yet seen what could be done if a dead chimp took high office in America. I think it's worth a try, just to see what would happen.

The APP's provisional slogan for 2012:

"THIS TIME....WHY NOT THE WORST?"

or

"PUT A STIFF IN THE WHITE HOUSE!"

or

"Vote for Chongo. He's DEAD serious about CHANGE in AMERICA!"

We've already had a couple of half-hearted tries at the concept, after all...

- Johnson was ethically dead

- Nixon was ethically dead

- Ford was charismatically dead

- Carter was dead when it came to having any good luck at all while in office

- Bush I was charismatically dead

- Reagan was virtually braindead

- Clinton was morally dead

- Bush II was virtually braindead

- Obama is widely perceived as a (GASP!) "liberal"!!!!!!! (this would be a significant asset almost anywhere else in the world except North Korea, Iran, and Myanmar (Burma)...but it's not considered an asset in the good ol' braindead USA... ;-D

At any rate...All of the above have been merely half-hearted tries at electing a dead man president. It's time to go ALL the way. The next president-elect to take the oath of office should by all rights rise up out of a coffin like Dracula when they perform the ceremony. Chongo is willing to do this if it gets him elected in 2012.

Hell, he's willing to do almost anything. ;-) Vote APP with confidence in 2012!

You just never stop with those, Doug,,, as I said on that other thread, that is NOT what he does or tries to do...but let the Republicans get full control and you WILL see such tactics.

(In health care, the WAS compromise...but the Republicans voted against the parts they got added! THEN they took polls showing 'the majority of the country' was unhappy with it...and called that 'failure' by Obama! The majority WANTED good, full health care...and the earlier polls proved it.

I guess I will never know if you really believe the distortions you repeat.

My point is that many people learn to lie to themselves in order to validate something they INTEND to support anyway....just as many Southerners told themselves that Blacks were basically 'inferior' and incapable of voting, self-government and higher functionality.
They HAD to believe obviously false assertions and ignore evidence to the contrary in order to perpetuate the economic system they had built ON slavery. There are similar forces and false beliefs and assertions going on today....and you KNOW a few of the old ones about African-American are still alive and fueling some decisions....most have just learned not to say it out loud and have substituted 'code' language.

Bill, those southerners (and many northerners) at that time probably believed that Blacks were "basically 'inferior' and incapable of voting, self-government and higher functionality". Such beliefs were very common among the White population at the time, not just in the USA, but elsewhere too, and there is a strong residue of such belief (toned down some) that is STILL very common among the White population, in my opinion. Also...I've met East Asians who think that way about Black people!

If people with such beliefs encounter a Black person who is smart, articulate, well-educated, and clearly as capable as they are...if not moreso...well, then they just say to themselves, "That one's an exception to the rule. Probably has some White blood in him (or her)!"

I'm not advocating or in any way supporting such a twisted form of prejudice...I'm merely pointing out that it is still fairly common.

Then too, minorities with a chip on their shoulder about being minorities is fairly common too. Either way, it doesn't make for good human relations, does it?
