And, there is frozen Sara Lee Dutch Apple pie for $3 on sale here. Pretty hard to beat a large and delicious pie for $3 that bakes in an hour. No way you can buy the ingredients for that price and m/bake one in an hour. No muss, no fuss.

Skivee, Lady Hillary and I have been drooling over a boat on eBay down your way [Maryland Marina, near Baltimore]. Although we don't intend to buy it, perhaps we could meet at the boat yard, admire the boat and proceed about our business.

Perhaps next Sunday?

I don't know where this "Villa Park" is, but it sounds like a lovely place for a pie fight. Failing that, you can propose your local watering hole.

In truth , about the only pie I REALLY detest is the terrible American style Mincemeat...awful.

Skivee, as I was discussing my previous posting with Lady Hillary, she suggested that a more appropriate challenge would be cream pies at 5 paces, followed by adjournment to the nearest tavern.

Agreed, John MacK ~~ except that beef-mince &c can also be called minced beef &c; & mince pies, as I said before, are made from what we both call mincemeat, which uses the old-fashioned meaning of 'meat' to mean any food, & contains NO meat in the modern sense at all.

BTW, why no mention so far of desperate Dan's cow-pie?

You'd have to go a ways to find a pie better than the Dutch Apple sold by Coco's. There is one bette,r though. It's the home-made crumb-top apple pie made at the Rock Springs Cafe in the desert hills fifty miles north of Pheonix.

Steak and ale pie for me! Or a good apple pie. Rob has been turning out some wonderful crumbles lately - latest was apple and blueberry, and rhubarb and apple was great too - but I suppose they don't really qualify as pies.

And of course, no thread about pie would be complete without This!

Mince is mince Mike. It's named only by the meat from which it's made, eg pork mince, lamb mince, beef mince, etc.
Mincemeat is always the delicious concoction of peel, currants, raisins, sultanas, nuts, and suet,(vegetarian if you must) with added alcohol.
We make our own, as shop bought tends to be both, too sweet, and too fine in texture.

Do you Yoosers over there have what we Yookers over here call "Shepherd's Pie"? ~~ a misnomer really, because it isn't a pie, because it hasn't a pastry crust, but a dish of minced lamb served under browned mashed potatoes: can be done with minced beef also, but then it is called Cottage Pie. I repeat, neither really strictly a 'pie' in the generally accepted sense of having a pastry case & topping; but delicious dishes nonetheless.

Not fond of custards (except for pumpkin.) A textural preference, I think.

The crust makes the pie, imho, whether sweet or savory. As much art and practice as science, in my experience.

Like 99% of people who make pies, I don't use lard because it so remarkably bad for you, but got to agree with Mark that it takes lard to make the truly perfect pie crust.

After pumpkin, I'd have to agree with the cherry pie lovers - no - wait - Apple - er - maybe blueberry?

I don't mean to contrary, but all those whom embrace the twin evils that are Key Lime pie and Mince Meat are doing simply doing the work of Satan.
Fresh Peach and Cherry are the only true pies. Dissenting opinions are invalid.

I just had one of the best pecan pies I ever ate.....and pecan pie **done right** is sure hard to beat! I haven't had good mincemeat pie in 40 years, but have memories of my mother making it.

However....I HAVE had fresh Gooseberry Pie, and it was beyond sublime. Hard to find fresh Gooseberries here though.

Then.... a friend makes a Cranberry-Pecan pies to die for....

And Keylime pie made 'just right' is heaven....

of course, Banana Creme is wonderful....

And, growing up, I preferred Cherry pie with vanilla ice cream....and...and...and I do NOT care for Rhubarb or Pumpkin- you may have my share.
-----------------------------\\

So....one day to live and an offer of ONE piece of pie made perfectly? I guess it would be the fresh Gooseberry.

I'm pretty much with you Wes except that nowadays I can't eat pecans dammit(divertidlar problems***sigh***..............Karen bakes some wonderful killer fruit pies and her crusts are unbelievable. But at the very top of my list is this ridiculously sweet and rich................

BUTTERMILK PIE (makes 2 pies)

Make up two of your favorite recipe deep dish pie shells or buy a couple of premade....your choice. Sorry you can't have Karen's! Brown them a bit before adding the filling.

FILLING:
Ingredients:
5 Cups Granulated Sugar
6 Tablespoons Flour
10 Tablespoons Butter
6 Eggs
3 Cups Buttermilk
2 teaspoons Vanilla
2 teaspoons vinegar

Combine the sugar and flour. Melt the butter in a separate bowl then mix in the eggs, buttermilk, vanilla, and vinegar. Mix well!!! Add in the sugar/flour and continue mixing.....good mixing is important.

Pour the filling mixture into the pie shells and bake at 400 for 10 minutes, then turn down to 350 for an additional 40-50 minutes (clean toothpick check). Let cool and EAT!!!

**************************************************************

Have a supply of antacid handy (and some rope to tie down your kids is helpful too).

Enjoy (and so will your dentist)

Spaw

Sorry Wesley, but pecan pie is my next-to-the-bottom choice, just above mincemeat pie, which I've never been able to understand at all. It's not that I consider mincemeat really bad food, it's just that every other kind of pie (I'm thinking in terms of dessert pies) is better. The best pie in the world is a proper banana cream; but I eat apple, cherry, and pumpkin more, so as to save banana cream for special sublime moments.
What about buttermilk pie? I ordered a piece in Death Valley Junction, at the Amargosa Cafe, just to try something I had never heard of, but someone who walked in just ahead of us got the last piece they had.
