Subject: BS: The Santa Delusion From: Wesley S Date: 23 Dec 10 - 01:29 PM I saw a standup comic earlier today and he cracked me up with this observation. To paraphrase: "What do we tell our kids? Don't EVER tell a lie. Never. Because if you do Santa Claus will find out and he won't come down your chimney on Christmas Eve and leave you any toys." Priceless. We lie to our kids when we tell them how honest they should be. |

Subject: RE: BS: The Santa Delusion From: gnu Date: 23 Dec 10 - 02:32 PM It's a little white lie. It helps parents. It entertains children. If parents were honest in answering children every time children asked a question... well... there might be a problem or two. |
Subject: RE: BS: The Santa Delusion From: Dave MacKenzie Date: 23 Dec 10 - 04:59 PM The trick is to be honest within the child's Weltanschauung. |
Subject: RE: BS: The Santa Delusion From: gnu Date: 23 Dec 10 - 05:04 PM Hmmm... "the child" doesn't even know how to spell that. |
Subject: RE: BS: The Santa Delusion From: Dave MacKenzie Date: 23 Dec 10 - 05:27 PM I had to check the dictionary. |
Subject: RE: BS: The Santa Delusion From: Cats Date: 23 Dec 10 - 05:57 PM I believe in Santa. Not as a man but as the community midwinter spirit that brings people together. I don't have children but for many years have written letters to friends children from Santa with stories from Christmas House. |
Subject: RE: BS: The Santa Delusion From: Dave MacKenzie Date: 23 Dec 10 - 06:17 PM ITV1 showed Christmas Tales: The Legend of Santa on Sunday night. Covered quite a lot of the origins, including Saint Nicholas, Odin and some of the other traditions - Chris Cringle from the German Christ Kindel (Christ Child). Even had a bit about Saturnalia with my friend Harry wrapped up in tin and flannel (and a fur cloak) and blowing his own trumpet - at least I think that's what the noise was. Could have been the instrument (which he had wrapped round him) trying to strangle him. |

Subject: RE: BS: The Santa Delusion From: Mo the caller Date: 24 Dec 10 - 05:11 AM Having been a very trusting child who suffered badly from a sense of 'let down' by the truth (not so much about Santa as about fairies), I tried not to lie to my children. As I didn't want to spoil the fun my line was "Some people say that......Santa comes..../....the tooth fairy takes your tooth and leaves money..../etc. Then they could look at the evidence and spin their own theories/fantasies, and when the time came to know the truth it was a game we'd played. By 2 yr old grandson saw Santa at a Christmas party last week - didn't like him one bit. And people he meets keep telling him that Santa's coming. ??? |
Subject: RE: BS: The Santa Delusion From: Amergin Date: 24 Dec 10 - 07:21 AM My 1 year old nephew sat on Santa's lap this month...and he screamed...so his parents got some blackmail photo. It's funny, though. I have a long beard, too...and he screams whenever I hold him.....he's not a screamer though. He's normally a very happy joyful kid. I have a photo of me smiling, holding him on my lap while he's crying and trying to get away! I put it on the facebook page of my guide to bad parenting. |
