A cup of Columbian coffee given to me by my boss whose bicycle tire I changed and for which he was ohso grateful, and a pipe of McClellands 5110, full English. It is another day. So far, so good. Perhaps there will be another day tomorrow.

Cornus canadensis (Canadian Dwarf Cornel, Canadian Bunchberry, Crackerberry,... Each flower has highly elastic petals that flip backward, releasing springy filaments that are cocked underneath the petals. The filaments snap upward flinging pollen out of containers hinged to the filaments. This motion takes place in less than half a millisecond and the pollen experiences 800 times the acceleration that the space shuttle does during liftoff. The Bunchberry has one of the fastest plant actions found so far requiring a camera capable of shooting 10,000 frames per second to catch the action (Edwards et al. 2005). The fruits are edible with a mild flavour somewhat like apples.

I'll have to be more careful when I'm out in the woods.

Don`t know, gnu. I was in Nfld many years back and I was given some to eat. IF my memory is right, they were a transparent greenish colour with some white stripes on them. They were delicious. However, all I know them as is cracker berries (so named I think because of the crack sound when ya bite into them). About the size of a medium blueberry.

Places serving all-day breakfasts are very plentiful all over Sydney, where I came from. It's quite a common practice, particularly on a Sunday morning in the inner 'burbs, particularly the more yuppie ones like Glebe and Annandale, to go out for a large breakfast quite late in the morning and into the afternoon. Good idea if you ask me!

Meanwhile, just coming out of winter in Somerset, it was scrambled eggs on toast today, with tea, followed by more toast with marmalade and vegemite (not together). The thing that made today's breakfast different was that we were able to have it in our usually chilly conservatory because the sun was shining and had warmed it up (we did get up rather late). We could sit out there and watch the birds. Roll on spring and summer!

"All Day Breakfast" is also popular in the US - there are chains that specialize in breakfast any time of the day, although they offer lunch and dinner items as well - International House of Pancakes, Waffle House, Cracker Barrel, Aunt Sarah's Pancake House. On a weekend the lines at those places will be out the door well into the afternoon, and a lot of those people are having 'breakfast'. Most diners will do breakfast any time, as well.

Coffee and cereal... BORING. Then I went to the gym, came home and had a cheese omelet (Gruyere. not as good as Cheddar) and toast, and for desert, a glass of lovely Port (2000). There's some of that port left (the port was Micca's fault), and that may be dinner.

I generally don't do the eggs first thing. I normally don't have time, and if I do, you just can't do a decent workout on a stomach full of eggs.

Today, blueberry pancakes for husband and me. Required two different batters, though: gluten-free (from a King Arthur Flour mix) for him, and whole wheat (and without the potato starch that the mix had) for me. We're just starting out on this gluten-free adventure. Common ground (for complex carbohydrates, at least) will be found in rice, I guess.

(I'm on a nightshade-free diet -- no potatoes, tomatoes, eggplant -- seems to minimize inflammatory arthritis in me and my mother.)

First breakfast: cereal, followed by a long run.

Real breakfast, about 10.30 a.m.: 4 slices of double smoked bacon from Aubrey's butcher shop, which is what they serve the really deserving Vikings in Valhalla, 2 fried eggs, 2 slices of Maritime brown bread from the Trillium bakery, and two large mugs of coffee.

Instead of my usual coffee, I washed down my usual breakfast with Darjeeling tea today - but, apparently, it could well have been Tregothnan tea, as that part of Cornwall grows the very same Camellias, in a similar micro-climate.
