Well, the great state of Wyoming has done it again. There is a bill, very nearly completly passed, that will void/nullify any gay/lesbian marriage OR civil union that was performed elsewhere.

So, if you are a married or civil partner passing thru Wyoming, hope you don't need next of kin permission or a valid spouse medical card while here. It won't be any good.

For more, see here..http://trib.com/news/state-and-regional/govt-and-politics/article_cd772713-8a75-58dd-8ae0-1f00428bdb33.html

Can't be bothered to make a link, please copy and paste.

And NO, I'm not kidding.

"void/nullify any gay/lesbian marriage OR civil union that was performed elsewhere. "

I didn't think that USA states could DO that ... and won't that violate international treaties too?

My friends must be upset. They went to Canada last year, after being together for over thirty years, and were married with tons of family and friends there. They have a good support community, of all types, including straight, but this is still a low blow.

If passed, it may go to the US Supremes, and Yes, fooles, I'm assuming that civil unions done in other countries will also be voided.

States are to recognize laws passed by other States.

Article. IV.

Section. 1.

Full Faith and Credit shall be given in each State to the public Acts, Records, and judicial Proceedings of every other State. And the Congress may by general Laws prescribe the Manner in which such Acts, Records and Proceedings shall be proved, and the Effect thereof.

Section. 2.

The Citizens of each State shall be entitled to all Privileges and Immunities of Citizens in the several States.

So Rapparee, this would be 'unconstitutional'? Doesn't seem to slow the eager beavers down, though ... :-)

They'll pass these ludicrous laws even though they will be struck down just so they can posture and prove their positions. Head up their ass positions, yes, but still, they want the world to see it.

They don't seem to realize how provincial and foolish they look.

Wyoming is so 'wonderful'. Just after wolves were put on the Federal Endangered List, Wyo put a bounty on them!

Buncha jerks in Cheyenne wasting time and money. I'm disgusted.

Matrimonial law is not my thng but I do believe that there is an international convention regarding international recognition of marriages (and indeed divorces) - although I do believe there are complications about polygamous/plygynous marriages and talaq divorces.

The more or less "official" abbreviated reference is SCOTUS for "Supreme Court of the United States."

One notorious spellchecker a few (computer) generations back insisted it should be corrected to "scrotums," and somehow that always flashes through my mind every time I type it (which is more often than I really like to do). I try not the think of the standup commedians of that time who made reference to "dried up wrinkly old bags.

Well, I think some of them are just bloody religious fanatics, but there's fair percentage of them that are fascinated by the thought of gay activities and are horrified by their own fascination. So they overreact about nine times over. Which accounts for all their raging and screaming. About what they think others might be up to.

They're dirty little secret is that they are closet gays, even to themselves. Tough on hard-bitten, gun-totin', tobacco-spittin' he-man cowboy who spends a lot of time worrying about his image.

Ha-a-a-o-u-wk PTUI!

I think "Brokeback Mountain" put some of the 'he-man cowboys' myth to bed in honesty. It shocked quite a few people's thinking.

In fairness though it's not just men who can be so oversensitive about sexuality of others. Sadly I have met some women in my life who can be terribly bigoted and worse than any man. It always seems worse from a woman somehow because, generally, women tend not to be so homophobic so it is a bigger surprise.

Many men have no trouble with it at all. People secure in their own sexuality seldom give others a hard time about it.

It seems a great shame Sorcha if this gets through. Do you think the people that have brought it in have done to try and gain them votes or do they genuinely believe in what they are trying to do? Either way it's bad but to do it just to gain election on incitement seems worse somehow.

I am sure there are far better things these people should concern themselves with. It's a great pity though for several reasons :-(

This is a state where a woman congressperson baked penis-shaped cookies and brought them in to share with her colleagues. She also took snapshots of crotches and played match them up with her colleagues.

She must be a real riot at parties, eh? ;-) I wonder if she knows Chongo?

Well, one of my good musical friends cooked up some bread loaves that looked like a giant penis and a set of large breasts at her last get-together. People thought it was a bit amusing, but no one took any offence over it. Had she, however, been involved in politics, it probably wouldn't have been a smart move. You have to be a bit more circumspect when you are serving in Congress.

I bet that Wymoming doesn't allow chimps into bars either, not even if they are fully dressed.

Am I to understand that if traveling through Wyoming as a gay couple, you would now legally cease to be married immediately upon entering the state, and legally resume being married immediatly upon leaving it??? They should make bad weather and stupidity illegal in Wymoming too and see if that works. ;-)

She got re elected too!

OK, here is the 'justification'..."Supporters of HB74 said the legislation is needed to resolve a conflict in Wyoming law, which defines marriage as a contract "between a male and a female person" but also recognizes any valid marriage performed outside the state."

I'll tell them how to fix the loop hole...a marriage is between any 2 consenting adults over the age of 18 (sic) or with parental permission.

Little Hawk, it hasn't quite passed yet, but yes, that is my understanding.

LOL! Well, it sounds like lawyer BS to me, Sorcha...along with probably pandering to local voting patterns.

Someone asked, ""Why do they spend so much time and energy worrying about other people's sex lives?"

There are several answers to that, but I think the number one is:

Fear.

People in the Judeo-Christian civilization are deeply afraid of sex (while simultaneously very desirous of it)...and they are particularly afraid of any kind of sex that strikes them as "unusual" in some way...or outside what they consider "the norm"...it scares the shit out of them!

Which brings up another thing they are even more afraid of than sex: bodily excretions. That is, urine...yes....but most particulary...SHIT!!!! People in this society are so afraid of shit, including even their own shit, that they will go to extraordinary lengths to avoid encountering it. Yes, indeedy. It is an enormous taboo.

And then there's visible aging!!! And death!!! Two more major things to avoid if at all possible.

Worry, worry, worry. Fret, fret, fret. There oughta be a law. ;-D

Yes LH. I sometimes wonder what combination of events led to the great sex-fearing and sex-obsessing of the Abrahamic religions. Pagans certainly never worried about it. And right they were not to.

As a foreigner when in The States, I have a UK passport. The terms of which allow me passage etc and recognition of my personal state. Being married, that means I am married regardless of where I am. As I am married to a lady, Wyoming has no issue with me but I thought on this as the other year, three couples, ourselves including, went skiing at Jackson Hole. One of the couples were women, the other men. Both couples with civil partnerships.

If we go again, (the skiing was great, the hospitality splendid, the moose drool tasty,) we have no issue either as our friends will be recognised, as The USA has to do as it is told.

Just like every other country that is signed up to the relevant treaties.

Cowboys who live a long way from the sea may not like it, but distance to civilisation is no excuse for letting your bigoted creeps vote through their institutionalised superstition.

Why does the best geography have the worst attitudes? France springs to mind whilst I am on a rant.

The latest....CHEYENNE (AP) — The Wyoming House of Representatives has voted not to agree with Senate changes to a bill that would specify that the state wouldn't recognize same-sex marriages performed elsewhere.

The House version of the bill would specify that Wyoming wouldn't recognize same-sex civil unions performed in other states.

Geeze louise.
