Subject: RE: BS: What do mice taste like? From: Big Al Whittle Date: 02 Apr 12 - 04:31 AM I bet Thoreau was sitting by the pond with his axe and and a few succulent mice, just there for the chopping. Kerouac in his cabin in the mountains in Dharma Bums, with his axe... George Washington with his axe. Thinking what's first this morning ....the cherry tree, or a few mice for the table..... Really its the American dream.... |
Subject: RE: BS: What do mice taste like? From: GUEST,999 Date: 02 Apr 12 - 12:21 AM That'd be a weekend, Al. You and Gnu together. Take a guy one long time to get over that, I'd say. Well, I have said so I should have said I do say. Say, consider it said. |

Subject: RE: BS: What do mice taste like? From: gnu Date: 01 Apr 12 - 05:20 PM After ya dress it, whatddya dress it with? I looked in Sobeys today but they only have dressing for chicken and turkey. Me, I don't bother with dressing any more. Just an onion cut in two and covered with summer savory. Even them McClaren's pickled onions would be too big eh? |

Subject: RE: BS: What do mice taste like? From: GUEST,999 Date: 01 Apr 12 - 09:35 AM The recipe you linked to calls for one mouse per tortilla, Janie. Looks tasty. But then I really like Mexicanish-food. The whole "dressing the carcass" thing confuses me. Yer really undressing it. Kinda like driving on parkways and parking on driveways. Bon appetit. |

Subject: RE: BS: What do mice taste like? From: GUEST,olddude Date: 31 Mar 12 - 04:59 PM I have eaten ground squirrel many times in survival .. I suspect a mouse is pretty much the same ... tasty but I have no desire to try it unless I was starving in the woods .. then anything goes. No you don't use it for bait, you use the guts and hide and head for bait. |
Subject: RE: BS: What do mice taste like? From: Bee-dubya-ell Date: 31 Mar 12 - 03:46 PM Owls have been known to shadow feeding deer at night. The foraging deer flush mice and other prey from the underbrush and the owls swoop down on them. Personally, I'd rather take a pass on the mice and eat the deer. |
Subject: RE: BS: What do mice taste like? From: Jeri Date: 31 Mar 12 - 02:08 PM The recipe for mice in cream is in 999's link. I am sorry, but I will NOT eat a mouse that still has its head. I don't want to see something watching me eat it. Not unless it has more than 5 legs. |
Subject: RE: BS: What do mice taste like? From: RangerSteve Date: 31 Mar 12 - 02:02 PM Check out a book called Unmentionable Cuisine. It's recipes from all over the world using ingredients that are common in some countries but taboo in others. There's a recipe for Mice in Cream. It's French, but since they eat frogs and snails and those little bite sized birds, I'm not surprised that they'd eat mice. |

Subject: RE: BS: What do mice taste like? From: Jeri Date: 30 Mar 12 - 05:28 PM 999, I'm pretty sure I wasn't asking how to ADdress a mouse, but how to dress one. I suppose that would depend on whether it was a male or female mouse, whether there were little buttons or zippers. As for the thought of actually eating mice, that is preposterous. Use them as bait! |

Subject: RE: BS: What do mice taste like? From: GUEST,999 Date: 30 Mar 12 - 12:26 PM "Seriously, how long does it take to dress a mouse?" I lost track of this thread first time 'round. I was going to answer Jeri's question but I note that every wise-ass on Mudcat beat me to it. So, instead of the more pedestrian 'crack' I shall present a poem. Ode to a Mouse Piss off you filthy rodent! The End |
Subject: RE: BS: What do mice taste like? From: Bettynh Date: 30 Mar 12 - 11:53 AM Bernd Heinrich is one of my favorite authors. He was a professor of biology at U. of Vt. with some rather unorthodox methods. In this book he describes a couple experiments he carried out. To read about them, click "Search inside this book" and enter mice. The story begins on page 176. A few pages on he discusses tasting bugs (and why he would do such a thing). |
Subject: RE: BS: What do mice taste like? From: Charley Noble Date: 30 Mar 12 - 11:19 AM Some mice have excellent taste. Our Dilbert preferred aged cheddar and non-saltine crackers. Then there's always ratatouille to ponder. Cheerily, Charley Noble |

Subject: RE: BS: What do mice taste like? From: bubblyrat Date: 30 Mar 12 - 06:28 AM This thread throws up (so to speak) several culinary possibilities. There's the popular Greek dish, Mouse Curry ( my nanna used to make it .....) Mice Crispies would make a tasty breakfsast for children. The Italians could have Misotto ( accompanied by French Mousecadet , naturally). Mice Pudding is very comforting on a cold day Someone else can play with the word Mousse ....... |
Subject: RE: BS: What do mice taste like? From: MGM·Lion Date: 30 Mar 12 - 06:04 AM Talking of big creatures they catch ~~ our Cleo once brought in, & consumed in our study, a huge dead pigeon: the house was full of feathers. She definitely thinks that we relish gifts of mouse & find the sight of her hunting them around the floor entertaining. It is proving quite difficult to convince her to the contrary, tho we are working on it and think she is beginning to get the message ~~ maybe! ~M~ |

Subject: RE: BS: What do mice taste like? From: Musket Date: 30 Mar 12 - 04:20 AM I always assumed mouse tastes a bit like the "Steak and Kidney" pie I have at half time at the football... I try not to speculate on the flesh origin of the "balti" pie... Mind you, when you ask for a rat's coffin, they know that you are not ordering a salad... The original post reminded me of hearing Billy Connolly in one of his name dropping routines, saying that Whoopie Goldberg reckoned Vegamite tasted like licking a cat's arse. Err... |

Subject: RE: BS: What do mice taste like? From: Janie Date: 29 Mar 12 - 09:21 PM Came across this thread "stalking" RangerSteve - not really Steve, just checking out threads you have posted to in order to get a sense of what might strike your fancy in terms of topics and posts while you are doing your best to heal. The first search led me to Steve's post, which got me to thinking about the "bug day" workshops ex hubby used to lead and in which I never participated because of my own deeply imbedded prejudices that would not allow me to overcome aversion, and the seeds of another long-winded post that no one wants to read. Found the wit so entertaining and a fine example of Mudcatters at play. I thought it worth resurrecting, and not ruining with my own loss of playful instinct. I don't know if these joyfully playful threads don't happen anymore, or if I have become so grim and busy that I simply don't explore the BS section like I once did to stumble across these gems. Either way, a fun read, and thanks! |

Subject: RE: BS: What do mice taste like? From: GUEST,Suibhne Astray Date: 10 May 11 - 03:20 PM Mice take a lot of preparing - they're a delicacy, though the foetuses can be eaten raw in lieu of caviar by the poorer classes who aspire to impress their guests with something truly exotic. What do mice taste like? Depends what you feed them on; a chocolate-fed mouse is going to taste different from one fed on grain, but mice have a very sweet tooth so chocolate's best I'd say. Cheese? No chance, but marinaded in milk overnight and shallow fried in butter a young mouse makes a crunchy breakfast treat. |
Subject: RE: BS: What do mice taste like? From: gnu Date: 10 May 11 - 02:56 PM Spices? 3 miles in back of beyond in the winter? What? Bog spruce needles? Or did you mean meat can taste like meat if you spice the crap out of it? Which, IMO, you would have to do for red squirrel on accounta it tastes worse than crap. Thank goodness I came upon a HUGE beaver dam later in the day. I cut an alder whip and got me a couple of Spruce Partridge. Tough but tastey. |
Subject: RE: BS: What do mice taste like? From: Jeri Date: 10 May 11 - 02:48 PM 999, they're probably better if they haven't gone through a cat first, but I'm speculating. Seriously, how long does it take to dress a mouse? |

Subject: RE: BS: What do mice taste like? From: gnu Date: 10 May 11 - 01:58 PM Bruce... "I`ve eaten squirrel--both grey and red--and muskrat. Meat tastes like meat." Red squirrel. Subject: RE: BS: What do mice taste like? From: GUEST,Alan Whittle Date: 10 May 11 - 10:31 AM bruce if you get that hungry again, stay at my place - I'll send you the fare. |
Subject: RE: BS: What do mice taste like? From: GUEST,999 Date: 10 May 11 - 10:03 AM Never eaten mouse. I would were it necessary. I`ve eaten squirrel--both grey and red--and muskrat. Meat tastes like meat. The flavour of the meat will often depend on what the animal`s been eating. (For example, corn-fed raccoon tastes like shit, imo.) I expect mice would be ok provided ya spiced them a bit. There wouldn`t be too much fat on them, so likely slow cooking with some vegetables, pepper and garlic would help the little tykes get tender. I don`t think we`re gonna see mice or voles at the local supermarket anytime soon, but ya get hungry enough, and meat is just meat. |
Subject: RE: BS: What do mice taste like? From: Jeri Date: 10 May 11 - 09:36 AM Joe, rabbits are lagomorphs, not rodents. If you have giant squid in your house, you could have some fairly complicated problems! Giant squid eat not-so-giant squid, and not-so-giant squid like crustaceans. I think the first thing you should do is check down the back of the sofa fOR crusty things that might have fallen, although you may not find any because the smallish squid have all eaten them. If course if you don't see any of the more modestly-sized squid, the giant squid are going to be VERY hungry. The only thing left for them to eat is... OMG!!! GIVE THEM THE DOG AND GET OUT OF THERE NOW!!! |
Subject: RE: BS: What do mice taste like? From: GUEST,Alan Whittle Date: 10 May 11 - 03:34 AM 'So how much different can mouse taste?' Give in! You try it and tell us. I used to go to a Chinese restaurant, that got done by the authorities for having mouse droppings everywhere. From that, I can tell you that mouse shit is pretty good seasoning. Unique even. But i don't go there now. Mind you there used to be this brilliant place for doing spare ribs on he Coventry Road out of birmingham. We all used to wonder why the spare ribs had this terrific flavour - then one afternoon we were walking past and saw a cat fast asleep in the basket of the deep fat fryer - it did make you think, what else had been asleep in there? |
Subject: RE: BS: What do mice taste like? From: Joe Offer Date: 10 May 11 - 02:58 AM So, OK, we have lots of posts here. Do we have a single post here from anyone who has ever eaten mouse? Rabbits and squirrels are rodents, right? And people eat rabbit and squirrel, right? So how much different can mouse taste? Hell, snakes like 'em. -Joe- |
