>>"The best about it, some of these sweat boxes actually think they are attractive. All we hear is " they are fun people" big jolly and cheery" "men like something to hold onto " crap.

They sway, stink and are disgusting. The national health service should make it compulsory to stick their fat asses into a bacon slicer.

Oh, another common one is "too fat to work, problem with their glands." So the taxpayer gets the privilege of keeping them."<<

You know, I'm glad I've left this forum now. I left because of this jerk and the fact he's allowed to post on here at all.

Hey, you want to know why women in this country are fat? OK, I'll tell you.

They're overweight because they're unhappy.

They are NOT allowed to be women you see. They are now pressurised into being Ladettes, the worst kind of Blokes, but wrapped up in Boobs and Bags.

From early on they are given messages that it's cool to be loud-mouthed, coarse, rude, drunk and overweight. Most of them are overweight due to alcohol, as it's loaded with sugar, but many folks don't understand this, seeing it as 'drink' rather than 'food'.

In men the booze fat goes to their bellies, in women, it goes all over...

They are now little more than sex objects, and regard men as little more than that either.

They are not allowed to be soft, feminine or shy.

They are not allowed to be maternal.

They have their 'kids', then scream at them, for they have never known love, in so many cases, so they do not know how to show it.

They are married several times over, or have so many fellas they can't remember all their names, least of all who is the father of which of their babies, none of whom they love.

They're told they must work 24/7, so they farm the kids out to others, having no time for them when they pick them up and take them home. If possible the kids will have breakfast at school, then stay there all day, taking work home too, but also doing after-school classes, in school, where often they now live from 6am to 6pm in some cases...

In the evenings they watch 'Eastenders' to catch up on who is shagging whom, what fashions they're all wearing, who's showing the most cleavage, or murdering their neighbours, stealing their babies etc...

Then, on a good day, they can watch The X Factory which churns out more of the lookalikes at every given opportunity, dumbing them down to an even deeper level....

Then, it's off to the pub or the club, where they can booze the night away in a Ladette's Night Out, arriving by 40foot pucepink limo, throwing up on the way home, spilling their souls on to the pavement..and waking the next morning, either alone, with kids they loathe screaming for attention in the background, or next to a bloke they've not a clue about...

This is their life......so they start the day with a drink, hell WHY NOT!!!

This is what our society has created for these poor souls....and their even more poor children...

On and on and bloody on it goes...

Little girls dressed as Lolitats, Mum's with boobs hanging out, no self-respect, no self-esteem, no self-worth...

Once, they were ALL sweet little girls, who dreamt of Princes and Love, but along came modern society, who threw a few Bratz Dolls their way, hooked them up to the Paedophilic Music and Fashion industry and then, sat back and waited.......

KABOOOOM!!!!!

Les Girls learned fast that either they joined in, became like 'all the rest' or they'd be ostracised entirely....

So out comes the Booze....Out come the Boobs...

Out goes The Soul.....Out goes The Spirit..

And a whole NEW Spirit awaits, dressed in fancy bottles, that numbs the searing pain of having to endure this shitty life which surrounds them..and pretty soon they learn that the booze numbs things so much, if you drink enough of it, for long enough, that life becomes almost bearable, almost 'fun'...

But late at night, as the stars come out and shine on to the bed of the Lost Lassies, the Sweet Little Girl tries to find her way out from The Spirits which now consume the person she's become...and just for a moment, a crystal tear runs down the chubby face, over the voluminous boobs, the duvet comfortable tummy, and into the lost dreams of a young woman, so lost, so unhappy, so fragile....that now and then Death seems to be preferable to this terrible thing called Life which she is having to endure...

....so she drinks a little more....in the hope that one day maybe her broken heart will literally break under her own weight. Until that day she comes, she hides the tears which, if she let them flow, would weigh four times as much as she does, such is her pain, her anguish, her distress.....

That's all, folks..

In the U.S. it is subsidized housing or "Section 8" referring to a federal category for housing the poor. Someone who has been on both sides of the pond will have to affirm if this is the same as "council housing."

Lizzie and Bluesman, you're both a bit off your rockers, fleshing out characteristics of a few and applying them to many.

Well, I've no excuse, I'm educated (University) and know perfectly well how much and what I should be eating. I'm not in the least unhappy, and while not well-off, I can afford food such as lean meat and good quality vegetables and fruit. I cook very well (IMO), I just EAT TOO MUCH and don't seem to want to reduce the quantity. If I DO exercise (walk or swim) I get ravenously hungry and could eat a horse! I haven't any weird genes or anatomical abnormalities (so far as I know) It's all my fault, and I know I ought to be addressing this. Winter isn't a good time though, the cold makes me want to eat. I imagine it's just that food is available and therefore we eat...and eat...and eat....

Megan, Manitas, and a few others who have shared, thank you.

To the judgemental and generalisers...walk a mile in the shoes of those you denigrate and remember, when you point a finger, four are pointing back at you.

The only thing I have to say, personally, is women beware doc's claims that there is no weight gain related to a hysterectomy and, reasons for lack of exercise and obesity can be hidden, something none of you may know about, so try not to judge.

I really think the title of this thread should be changed. Obesity is not confined to any one country: World Health Organization.

The basis premise, as stated in the BBC article, is intrinsically flawed. Doing a pseudo-scientific study of obesity based only upon relative Body Mass Indices (BMI) is absurd. BMI is a ratio of height to weight, and has only a passing relationship to body fat content.

Muscle is heavier (per cubic volume) than fat. A very physically-fit person will usually have a higher BMI than one with the same dimensions (neck, chest, waist and hip measurements) who is sedentary. Conversely, if a fit and a sedentary person have the same BMIs, the fit one will generally be slenderer. It is a common phenomena for a person to go on a strenuous exercise program and to gain weight if he doesn't also change his eating habits.

Quoting from the article:

A person is defined as obese if their body mass index (BMI), the result of a calculation involving weight and height, is above a certain level.

The BMI correlates fairly well with body fat.

Notice 'fairly well'. Not 'well', for example. There are plenty of people with an 'obese'-indicating BMI who are not fat. For example I happen to know someone who had anorexia, weighed around 6 stone whose BMI still proclaimed her fat - and that was by no means helpful in that dread situation.

Secondly, while there are certainly people who are very overweight -and I am quite overweight myself statistically speaking - it is both patronising and simplistic to assume it is because they either 'know no better' or are too weak willed to change they habits. Sometimes, yes, but also sometimes no. For example, I did a detailed investigation on what my life expectancy was when I reached 40 (and again at 50), with the perfect weight, amount of exercise and so on, together with the most likely causes of death. I then repeated the analysis with my actual life style (again with the most likely causes of death) and did semi-formal cost-benefit analysis in terms of the increased years together with what things I loved or hated that would have to change. And while I changed some things, the relatively few years difference was simply not worth the pleasures I would lose for many decades.

So the weight I am and my lifestyle is a very considered and deliberate choice. As the poem has it "There is a price to sinning, and I'll pay it."

Ya wanna lose weight? Eat every hour to two hours. Eat fruit and veggies. Eat cabbage... cabbage... cabbage... did ya get that? cabbage in yer salad.

6AM two heaping tablespoons of cottage cheese and a hard boiled egg... 8AM some fruit... 10AM a half tin of fish (I prefer salmon)... noon water, lots of water... 2PM a treat - whatever... 4PM a good supper... 6PM water, lots of water... 8PM multigrain type bread and peanut butter.

Mix it up. For a treat, I often have baked beans... yeah, lots of sugar, but ya don't NEED a lot to satisfy that sweet tooth.

Above all, ya gotta say to yourself, I am satisfied with losing a few pounds a week or not gaining any doing this.

I am down 105 pounds and I was NEVER hungry and I did not buy a diet book. I just found out what worked for me. I ate pizza, lasagna, ice cream, etc... but only once a week or so.

BTW... I was losing weight when I was having my "treat" at suppertime several times per week... TWO large bowls of ice cream and then nothing for the rest of the day. Didn't feel I needed to eat anymore. Ice cream!

Play with it. Took me two years but it works. A hundred pounds.

Eat a bit every two hours.

There is no excuse for someone digging their grave with their teeth. Firstly they look disgusting, secondly they place a burden on an already over stretched health service.

Have you noticed, the only people attempting to defend or make excuses for these bison's carry a fair bit of steak on their own arses.

I would start and hit them hard in the pocket, like smokers and drinkers. Have you ever sat on a three hour flight with some monster beside you ? I have, six asses hanging out of the seat, listening to their laboured breathing, smelling their sweat. It never stops them eating half the contents of the food trolley when it comes around. Booking flights should require you state your weight. If you arrived on board with two heavy items of hand luggage you would be charged extra, so tax their fat asses.

Yeh Bluesman is a bit weird. he's got problems that bloke. People with that sort of talent for abuse are a bit sad. I urge no one to get hurt by what he says. He's very damaged goods.

If when you're teaching and you get a kid like that in the class - really sociopathic - all the class is looking at the clock, really tense, willing the lesson to be over. And I think that is a sort of microsm of their lives.

Their partners, their, kids, their lovers ...inevitably they end up waiting the chance to get away from the poor sods - watching the clock til they can escape the oppression.

perhaps we can make a difference to him, and show him that life is not just a creative opportunity for his power to insult and hurt. this forum can be such a source of love and decency.

I sense that for some poor damaged souls, like Bluesman, it is maybe their last best chance to learn basic good manners and consideration for others - a pity that his parents neglected to pass that on to him. but we can't all be blessed with a background that teaches us a loving and normal regard for goodness.

Figures show that the amount of people (including teachers) that applied for ill health pensions over the past ten years due to health issues related to their body bulk (including bogus without factual medical evidence) went up by 35%. Fortunately review boards challenged the majority of them resulting in whinging and crying and no pay outs. You can find proof of this on most public forums.

But where did I mention grey hair anyway?   And why go on about specsavers - I made my disagreement perfectly clear. I'm a short fat grumpy left-wing little old man. Get over it.

Interestingly, the son of a friend of mine has just been refused entry into the army because his BMI is too low.

For anyone who might have missed it, people often snack when they're not hungry but thirsty. They just recognise hunger far more readily.

So, instead of snacking, drink plenty of water - not tea, coffee or soft drinks - thereby lowering your calorie intake and satisfying the real rather than the false need.

These suggestions are of the same category as looking left and right to make sure it's safe before crossing the road. You're improving the odds on a healthier and happier life.

I think you'll probably find that explosive ordnance disposal has largely (there's that word again) migrated to the engineer corps -- RE.

The fact that obesity is overwhelmingly a poor people's problem should help point to the reasons for it. What are low-wage jobs like nowadays? Mostly quite static -- stocking shelves, call-centres, big-box retail, serving at the counter in fast-food franchise joints. What pleasures can folks on those wages afford? TV, cigarettes and cheap restaurant meals.

Middle-class obesity is all about time debt -- two hours of commuting per day, by car or public transit, on top of knocking yourself out to keep that job. How many office workers eat at their desk? In my office, everybody. Who's got time for exercise? Only those who have deliberately planned their lives around it -- and it sure helps to have a spouse to take up the slack.

Anyone who says that s/he has the answer to the problem of today's obesity epidemic doesn't understand the question.

gnu, you're quite right! I (once!) lost three stones in weight by eating MORE, and MORE OFTEN, with a nice homemade soup containing many different vegetables, including cabbage, and some meat stock. I ate this every two hours or so, as much as I wanted, and I didn't feel at all hungry. I also drank lots and lots of water. I was as full as a stuffed cushion, but I lost weight, at the rate of about three pounds a week, and felt marvellous. The trouble though with all diets is maintaining the ideal weight and not putting it all on again.
I do feel that being fat is rather better than being filled with vituperative hate for all and sundry.

I am not a UK woman. I am an American woman living in the UK. You know... one of the notoriously fat Americans.

I had only little extra weight (about 15 pounds or little over a stone heavier than optimum) while I lived in the US. But I was active and pretty fit, otherwise I would have been more like both of my parents who were/are obese. Oddly enough their parents were slim.

In 2005, I lost my daughter, the shock sent my autoimmune system into a tizzy and left me with rheumatoid arthritis the pain of which has made me sedentary.

Being married to a vegetarian I don't eat terrible foods, or large portions for that matter. Drink is limited to about once a month a pint or couple of glasses a wine. My favorite food is ice cubes and favorite drink is water.

Now 70lb heavier than I was 6 years ago.

Swimming is the recommended activity and I can do without further taxing already inflamed ankles, hips and shoulders. However the community pool which has steps by which I can access, is no where near bus stop. Also my work is no where near a bus stop. So early morning swim would be very expensive having to take taxi to and from the pool.

I am an example that there is usually more than one thing going on in any case of obesity.

Eliza

I had severe infection of the gall bladder back in Feb and nearly died.

After, I said to a surgoen I didn't specially want my body invaded again to have the bladder out. He said Fine as long as I had as near as dammit a no-fat diet.

First i was scared then I set about finding a new cuisine and then a lapsed a bit on the fat front.

Last Saturday I had the same initial pain as back in Feb and began packing my bag for hospital while waiting to hear from the emergency doctor. I confessed to her having lapsed into some fat and she said, that's it. However by the time I was speaking to her, the pain had gone and when I pressed where the pain had been, it no longer hurt.

She said, lay off fat and drink plenty of water, and see how it is in a few days. She said it was a flaring up of the inflammation.

I've done that and no further problems.

My point is I've been generously given a warning shot. I am heeding it.

The advantage of the low/no fat route is that it is just better for me/anybody, so that rather than the easier one of just painlessly having the gall bladder out is a blessing in disguise.

Others may not get warnings first.

You pays your money etc.

well well well

Just back from health check - yes I am over weight but not as much as I thought. Blood sugar perfect. Cholesterol a tiny bit high and best treated with more exercise. Blood pressure tiny bit high and best treated with exercise.

Now I need to get the pain sorted so I can get proper exercise.

Having been the person in complaining line when my late wife had hers out, and the person who had to go an shout at nurses for more pain meds (and this was when we still had insurance so it was private) I think you have been misinformed unless the US knows something the UK does not. Women who have had 3 children are not usually wusses on the pan threshold front and BOY was I getting it in the neck!

Well I have had my gall bladder removed, together with a pancreatic pseudo-cyst drained in the same procedure and, dear Autolycus, you have my absolute assurance that it is not, by any stretch of a vivid imagination, painless. In fact I was on morphine on demand for several days in hospital, and on strong oral painkillers for several weeks afterwards.

In fairness, I didn't have the keyhole surgery that's frequently carried out nowadays, it was an open procedure with a 12-inch wound right across my abdomen, but anyone who claims that it's painless is deluding you or themselves, probably both.

Did your wife have hers out with key-hole surgery?

P.S. I'm in U.K.
