Subject: Lyr Req: Your top two Burns Night songs? From: AllisonA(Animaterra) Date: 18 Jan 12 - 04:48 PM We seem to be the ones who get the last-minute calls! Hunt and I have just been invited to sing two songs next week at a Burns' Night supper. Our personal Burns repertoire is fairly short, and I haven't been to a Burns' Night in probably 25 years, so what are your favorite two songs to sing (the MC is doing Auld Lang Syne, so we have the rest of the repertoire to choose from!). Thanks a bunch! allison |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Your top two Burns Night songs? From: AllisonA(Animaterra) Date: 18 Jan 12 - 06:17 PM A man's a man- great song! Both are great, actually, but I probably better stay away from Ye Jacobites, not really knowing my audience and a' that... |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Your top two Burns Night songs? From: michaelr Date: 18 Jan 12 - 08:56 PM There are many good Burns songs. Some more that my band does: The Winter it is Past Leezie Lindsay Ye Banks and Braes o' Bonnie Doon The Soldier Laddie Also nice: My love is like a red, red Rose John Anderson my Jo Willie Stewart Ae Fond Kiss |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Your top two Burns Night songs? From: Maryrrf Date: 18 Jan 12 - 11:07 PM A Man's a Man and Green Grow the Rashes would be my vote. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Your top two Burns Night songs? From: GUEST,Wee Jock Date: 19 Jan 12 - 06:10 AM My songs would be Ca'The Yowes Tae the Knowes (2nd Version), Let Me In This Ae Night, The Highlands Widows Lament. You could also if you wanted to recite the poem Address To A Haggis. Hope you have a good Burn's Night and whatever you choose to do enjoy. Cheers Wee Jock |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Your top two Burns Night songs? From: sciencegeek Date: 19 Jan 12 - 07:21 AM I usually go with Tibbie Dunbar... which I learned from that little known LP by Flying Cloud. LOL this is my not so subtle hint that Liam's Brother really needs to get those songs back into circulation. :D |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Your top two Burns Night songs? From: AllisonA(Animaterra) Date: 19 Jan 12 - 08:48 AM Great ideas! Maryrrf, I'm leaning in your direction, but they're both a little on the slow-ish side and Hunt wants at least one upbeat one. The wonderful Mary DesRosiers (fine Scottish name...?) is MC'ing and will deliver the Address To A Haggis. I'll check out the others- thanks, all! |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Your top two Burns Night songs? From: GUEST,leeneia Date: 19 Jan 12 - 11:03 AM I'm not sure if it's truly Burns, but there's an upbeat song called the Lea Rig that you might like. The tune I know is jaunty. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Your top two Burns Night songs? From: GUEST,Allan Conn Date: 19 Jan 12 - 12:22 PM The Lea Rig is a lovely song but it's usually sung as quite a slow sombre love song. Certainly here in Scotland anyway! Scots Whae Hae is one that can be sung at widely varying tempos too. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SrPFrtNtF1k&feature=related |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Your top two Burns Night songs? From: GUEST,Allan Conn Date: 19 Jan 12 - 12:50 PM Just to give a flavour the list of songs members of our club at Kelso are doing this Saturday is. The Silver Tassie; Leezie Lindsay; Gin I Were A Baron's Heir; Bonnie Wee Thing: Ca The Yowes Tae The Knowes; Scots Wha Hae;Sweet Afton; Ae Fond Kiss; My Love Is Like A Red Red Rose; Ye Banks And Braes; Parcel o' Rogues; John Anderson - and worryingly someone is doing Annie Laurie! He must think it is Burns!! |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Your top two Burns Night songs? From: Jim McLean Date: 20 Jan 12 - 06:29 AM Just a reminder that the version of Tibbie Dunbar sung by the Dubliners (and others) from 1966 onwards was extended by myself by writing the second "half". |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Your top two Burns Night songs? From: Maryrrf Date: 20 Jan 12 - 07:47 AM Although usually done slowly, have a listen at this version of "A Man's a Man" by Old Blind Dogs . They speed it up and follow it with a fast paced tune. That might be an option if you don't want to have two slow songs. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Your top two Burns Night songs? From: Steve Parkes Date: 20 Jan 12 - 10:30 AM You're welcome to borrow this, if you think it would go down all right. I wrote it a few years ago, and it's almost entirely a true story that happened here on the Isle of Wight (except from the fish & chips). When I say I wrote it ... Robert himself wrote most of it; I just moved the lines around a bit ... NOT AT THIS ADDRESS Some hae meat and cannat eat; We wad eat — the snag is, We've booked the room, the piper too, But somewan's swiped the haggis! Noo, Burns nicht fare's nae skanking ware (Whate'er they mean by a' that): There's but wan pud that's any good And bears the gree, and a' that. Mrs Mac popped tae the butcher's shop Tae place a timely order, Tae provide her clients wi' the choicest viands Available south o' the Border— Tae sairve a meal wi' sic appeal 'Twould be be a nicht harmonious For Sassenachs and Scots ex-pats— A supper Caledonious. But when she came tae fetch it hame She was tell't it by the butcher: Some scallywag had filled his bag An' scarpered wi' the supper! Could we mak' do wi' French ragout, A curry or a balti? They'd tak' a sneerin' scornfu' view O' sic a spread sae faulty! Ach, on the day we'll simply say: We ken it isna cricket, But we've sent oot for fish an' chips— If ye dinna like it — stick it! |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Your top two Burns Night songs? From: AllisonA(Animaterra) Date: 23 Jan 13 - 08:09 PM Apparently they liked us so much they wanted us back, so this year we're doing: My Love is Like a Red, Red Rose Parcel of Rogues A Man's a Man for A' That Green Grow the Rashes, Oh They also want an instrumental set. We're just humble contra dance musicians when it comes ti instrumental music, so it'll be Moon and 7 Stars/Jefferson&Liberty/ Hundred Pipers Mairi's Wedding/ Road to Boston Da Slockit Light Flowers of Edinburgh/ Scully's Reel/ Farewell to Whiskey Amelia |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Your top two Burns Night songs? From: eddie1 Date: 24 Jan 13 - 04:26 AM Been a few mentions of Ae Fond Kiss. For my money this is one of the greatest love songs ever written although it came from a period when Burns was in Edinburgh, mixing with the literati and getting far from his roots. He wrote it for Nancy McElhose who he called Clarinda in other poems. The verse that always gets to me: Had we never lov'd sae kindly, Had we never lov'd sae blindly, Never met - or never parted, We had ne'er been broken-hearted. How true! Eddie |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Your top two Burns Night songs? From: GUEST Date: 24 Jan 13 - 06:18 AM Ae Fond Kiss is wonderful as is my favourite Lea Rigg mentioned above (hear Rod Paterson) I'm hoping my month long cough might at last be gone today so I can sneak in somewhere tomorrow with a song or two. My takes on Lady Mary Anne, The Young Highland Rover (another great melody) and Lizzie Lindsay can be heard here using the little player thingy. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Your top two Burns Night songs? From: BrendanB Date: 24 Jan 13 - 09:31 AM Ae fond kiss and wrestling winds are the two I use regularly. Two great songs. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Your top two Burns Night songs? From: GUEST,leeneia Date: 24 Jan 13 - 11:34 AM Flow Gently, Sweet Afton. Don't do all twelve verses. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Your top two Burns Night songs? From: Snuffy Date: 24 Jan 13 - 11:56 AM Wrestling winds? I blame it on the neeps! |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Your top two Burns Night songs? From: GUEST Date: 24 Jan 13 - 12:43 PM The last time I sang it "O Gin I Were a Barons Heir" was written by an North East composer whose name escapes me at the moment, it was probably Annon. "Last May a Braw Wooer" has a bit of a swing to it. "My Nannies Awa" for pathos. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Your top two Burns Night songs? From: BrendanB Date: 24 Jan 13 - 01:20 PM Damn it damn it damn it! It should have said westling winds. I blame it on using an iPad with predictive text (which I do not know how to turn off). |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Your top two Burns Night songs? From: Allan Conn Date: 24 Jan 13 - 02:13 PM "The last time I sang it "O Gin I Were a Barons Heir" was written by an North East" Yes you're right seemingly the words are traditional and not Burns so that was two on the list from last year that weren't Burns. Don't think there are non Burns this year. The list is Bonnie Lass of Ballochmyle;Ye Banks and Braes:Sweet Afton;Highland Lassie O;Green Grow the Rashes;John Anderson; Ca' the Yowes;Ae Fond Kiss;My Love is like a RRR and I'm doing The Gardener Wi His Paidle. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Your top two Burns Night songs? From: Rumncoke Date: 24 Jan 13 - 05:23 PM At an all male dinner I did 'Hi for the lass wi a tocher' which seemed to suffice. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Your top two Burns Night songs? From: GUEST,Lighter Date: 24 Jan 13 - 06:09 PM Belated thanks to Jim McLean, who in this case seems more like a nom de plume for "Robert Burns." |

Subject: ADD: Ode to a Vegetarian Haggis (Tim Dalling) From: Joe Offer Date: 25 Jan 21 - 09:11 PM And this was recited at the Mudcat Worldwide Singaround today. Ode To A Vegetarian Haggis Tim Dalling January 1993 Oh vegetarian haggis whit a view Thou glorious, steaming bag of veggie goo No one could ever say that you Dish death to beasts, Not a single murdered chicken, pig or coo Taints your braw feasts. But noble pud you must ignore the taunting bores From meaty Caledonia’s shores, The moaning bloody carnivores Who think you need To slaughter sheep in scores To have good feed. Thy beauteous form can satisfy The keenest neb or mouth or eye, Wi’ as braw’ a meal as ane could buy Pulse, veg and spice And ev’n sheep eaters that dare to try Say Oh it’s nice! So stuff the purists and their cries of sin Let’s split this pudding, serve and shovel it in, And what the hell if it’s wee skin A humble plastic bag is. Let’s drink a toast and we’ll begin The vegetarian haggis. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Your top two Burns Night songs? From: Allan Conn Date: 26 Jan 21 - 02:31 AM Mind I don't think there is any need to translate "pudding" into "sausage" for English speakers - certainly not here in the UK. Pudding has the very same use in England as it does in Scotland. For example "haggis pudding" or "black pudding" is exactly the same. ;-) |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Your top two Burns Night songs? From: Felipa Date: 26 Jan 21 - 08:28 AM my top choices are A Man's a Man for a' That and the very poplular "Ae Fond Kiss" I also like Westlin' winds and Such a Parcel of Rogues in a Nation. Green Grow the Rashes-o always puts me in mind of a Scottish Conservation Projects working holiday. We were scything rushes to thatch an old cottage with. It was hard work and one participant kept saying he couldn't understand how Burns could wax lyrical about it. But we were having no dalliances on the side. I like the sound of the song anyway. I often sing Ewan MacColl songs on or around Burns night; Ewan's birthday was 25 Jan 1915. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Your top two Burns Night songs? From: Gallus Moll Date: 26 Jan 21 - 04:42 PM There are over 300 songs written and collected by Burns so plenty of choice! Better start going through them now, ready for next year..... |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Your top two Burns Night songs? From: GUEST Date: 26 Jan 21 - 04:55 PM Yes, six hundred (collected, adapted, and of course composed) is indeed "over 300". |
