Humph! The Empire Strikes Back, eh? Hasn't anyone noticed that the USA's present armoury of weapons looks very much like a set of equipment that Darth Vader would be commanding? They are the ugliest, most evil-looking airplanes ever built in history, and they are NOT serving the interests of the human race in any way whatsoever, in my opinion. The US military went over to the "dark side" a long time ago.

This is not to degrade the brave men and women who serve in that military, however. I fully respect them as individuals...but I regret that they are being used in a tragically wrongful cause...and thrown callously on the trash heap by their corrupt political leaders when they get wounded and maimed in the service of that wrongful cause. They deserve far better leadership than they are getting.

I think you're quite correct about that, Amos. There were honorable men in all past armies...but as you say, they were rather vulnerable to peer pressure...and national dogma. They usually had far more in common with their opponents on the battlefield than with their leaders who sent them out to die.

Rap - The men who enlisted after Pearl Harbour were responding first and foremost to a deep passion to defend their homeland! I agree with that. Secondarily to that, I'm sure they were almost all subject to peer pressure a good deal of the time...a key part of military training IS peer pressure. You don't want to fall short in the estimation of your officers and fellow soldiers.

The Germans and Japanese and Russians and everyone else who fought in WWII were ALSO responding first and foremost to a deep passion to defend their homeland! Anyone who can't see that is deluding himself.

However, they were also under a lot of peer pressure from the system and the people around them. In some cases it was absolutely crushing peer pressure. This was most significant in the case of the Japanese, I think, who were bound by their honor system to sacrifice themselves, often needlessly.

It's the peer pressure and propaganda brought upon soldiers that concerns me. It misleads people into following bad leaders and doing very bad things. I have NO objection to the honest passion in all soldiers to defend their own homeland and their way of life. That's totally understandable. And it is why I sympathize with honorable soldiers in ALL armed forces, not just in those who happen to be on "the right side" historically in some war.

peer pressure is probably a poor choice of words. Duty to the guy next to you is probably more correct. Watching each others back. Maybe in training there is peer pressure for sure ... you screw up, the whole platoon does pushups till they puke ... but not so on the battle field

My duty was to the guys I served with. They watched my back and I watched theirs. That said, none of us were drafted into the National Guard -- all joined voluntarily and all knew the risks. I was in a unit that drew the short straw, so we did our "duty" as we saw it. If that happened to fit into the Grand Scheme Of Things, fine. If not, tough.

Example:

The unit drove POL tanks from Chu Lai to Phu Bai -- 5000 gallon tank truck full of gas, avgas, diesel. One time the convoy was ambushed; it was on a S curve with one side uphill and the other about 75 feet down. The lead truck was hit with a 12.7 and an RPG, the driver (a replacement, not one of the activated NGs) was badly shot up. He yelled to his Assistant Driver, "Jump out!" and when the AD was clear he drove is rig over the edge so the convoy could clear the kill zone of the ambush. No officer witness, no Medal of Honor. Just honor in the hearts of those whose lives he saved.

He didn't do that because of peer pressure. Peer pressure won't cause you to jump on a grenade or walk into a minefield to bring out a wounded man. What makes you do those things is the fact that's your buddies are involved and that they're going to die unless someone does something.

Understood, Rap. I didn't mention that part about looking out for your buddies in your unit, but I think it is the strongest motivation of all in soldiers. You go through training together, you face the dangers and hardship together, you become friends and comrades in arms, you live and die beside the men (or women) you serve with. In any army I think that has to be the deepest connection of all, without a doubt...and it produces many unsung heroes. And I salute them all.

The movie "Black Hawk Down" really brings that home.

You have to have enough imagination to briefly put yourself inside the mind of the average young German soldier at the time, Pete, and understand what he was thinking about. I gather you haven't ever tried to do that?

# 1 - They were under the false impression that the war started because Poland had committed vile atrocities on ethnic Germans in Poland (rape, robbery, violence, etc) and had sent a raid across the German border. This was what their government told them. It was all lies, but they didn't know that. They believed what they were told, just like most people everywhere do when their government tells them the nation is being threatened.

# 2 - The Germans didn't declare war on Britain and France over Poland. The British and French declared war on them. Again, they were under the impression (this time a correct one) following that that they needed to defend their country against the British and French...2 major powers, both considered in the same league as Germany when it came to fighting a war. Defending their country was the first thing in their minds from that moment on, and once the fighting starts: YOU FOLLOW the orders YOU are given. This is true in EVERY armed forces of every nation. And you go where you are told to go. And you figure it's necessary to defend your side.

# 3 - They had been taught for a generation that Germany had been oppressed and betrayed by the Treaty of Versailles (and that was true) and that the country was threatened from within by Jews and Communists (that was untrue). They believed all of that too.

They honestly believed they were defending Germany. That led to military campaigns which rapidly took them across borders into many other countries. Everyone crosses borders when the fighting starts...IF they possess the expertise to win the battles that are waged on those borders. And you don't stop till you've won or lost the campaign, beaten the enemy or been beaten by them. If you're winning you invade.

Present day American troops are told that they are defending the American way of life and defending "freedom" by invading distant foreign places like Iraq and Afghanistan. That too is a blatant lie. They are not defending the USA, they are helping to bankrupt it. But a lot of them believe the lie that they are defending their nation. You CAN be the aggressor, you can invade and occupy other places, and you can still be quite convinced that you are legitimately defending your homeland. It's happening right now in the Middle East and western Asia, and Americans and their western Allies are doing it. They ARE the German Blitzkrieg of the present era...very good at their job, which is killing people and securing vital strategic resources and political puppets for big American corporations.

LH, you're forgetting a few things.

First, the average German soldier wasn't stupid -- stupid doesn't work in war. German forces were massed along the Polish border prior to the German excuse for Sept. 1, 1939.

Second, soldiers don't fight for a cause. They may enlist for a cause but they fight for their lives and the lives of their buddies. This is brought home the first time a bullet goes "CRACK!" by your ear or you see the guy next to you blown up, shot down, burned alive, bayoneted, or in other was rendered dead, dead, dead or turned into a living wound with his or her jaw shot away, intestines hanging out in the dirt, stumps for legs.

Thirdly, the human race in general is very good at killing. From punji sticks to nuclear weapons. The most common military rifle in the world is the AK-47 -- from the Soviet Union, not the US. Probably the most used sidearm caliber is 9mm Parabellum -- from Germany. The British Square, the Greek Phalanx, Greek Fire, Swiss Pikemen...you can continue the list.

But this depresses me. Let's gossip about Chongo Chump.

No, of course they weren't stupid, Rap. But they had been conditioned by years of intense political propaganda to hate the regime in Poland (which was actually a rather unpleasant regime in some respects) and to think of Germany as surrounded by enemies. So they probably did believe much of the propaganda they were exposed to.

Forces can mass along a foreign border and still believe it's a defensive move. The Russians were in a forward stance, massed along their western borders when the German invasion started in June of '41...it didn't help the Russians, though, it just gave the Luftwaffe and the Panzer divisions a lot of really good targets. The Russians would have been better off with a defense in depth rather than a forward positioning of their forces, because the Germans had much greater exerpertise at breaking through such lines and exploited the Russian defense to their own great advantage, capturing hundreds of thousands of Russian troops and wiping their airforce almost off the map in a few days.

Yup. That's what happens allright. The moment the first shot was fired, every German soldier who heard it did whatever he had to do from that point on...and so did every Polish or Russian soldier...same as any soldier in any army. There is no question that they were very patriotic and highly motivated, their effectiveness and courage in combat proved that, but war is something that simply takes its inevitable course and plays out to the end once the shooting starts, and then it becomes about survival, unit pride, and fighting for the guys who are next to you.

And, yeah, it is depressing.
