Subject: RE: Help: Looking for recording of 'Water is Wide From: McKnees Date: 09 Oct 99 - 08:51 PM I like the Seekers version on the best of the seekers, released in 1997 by emi.cdmfpe 6338. McKnees. waiting to be shot down in flames. |

Subject: RE: Help: Looking for recording of 'Water is Wide From: Jon Freeman Date: 09 Oct 99 - 11:58 PM The only version I have is by Max Boyce on "The Roads and the Miles" - one of his few (or perhaps only) attempts at making a record of folk songs. Jon |
Subject: RE: Help: Looking for recording of 'Water is Wide From: Dale Rose Date: 10 Oct 99 - 02:42 AM Dear McKnees, There's absolutely no reason at all to fear being shot down for stating an opinion like that. (At least I hope not) While I have always loved the music of the Seekers, on The Water Is Wide, I prefer Maura O'Connell's version on Philo/Rounder 1124, released in the US in 1989. But then, I prefer Maura O'Connell's version on just about anything she sings, though if it is being compared with Dolores Keane, then it is sometimes too close to call! PS Don't call that a shot, just a gentle nudge. |
Subject: RE: Help: Looking for recording of 'Water is Wide From: Ana Date: 10 Oct 99 - 03:01 AM ..and then there is Gay Woods offering in Steeleye Span's fairly recent "Time" -Shanachie Records; 79099. It can also be found on a rather nice compilation "Voices of Celtic Women" -Shanachie, 78011 (some great tracks on this) Ana |
Subject: RE: Help: Looking for recording of 'Water is Wide From: Stewie Date: 10 Oct 99 - 03:08 AM For a relatively recent recording, try Barry Dransfield's version on his 'Be Your Own Man' CD Rhiannon RHYD5003. He is one half of the legendary Dransfields. Barry has that wonderful knack of making songs that you've heard a thousand times sound brand new. |
Subject: RE: Help: Looking for recording of 'Water is Wide From: bigJ Date: 10 Oct 99 - 09:25 AM Others worth listening to would be:- Dave Burland - 'Rollin' LP(1985) Moonraker Moo6 De Dannan (Tommy Fleming)- 'Hibernian Rhapsody' CD (1996) Bees Knees PED 961 Niamh Parsons - 'Blackbirds and Thrushes' CD (1999) Green Linnet GLCD1197. Even Cliff Richard recorded it somewhere along the way! |

Subject: RE: Help: Looking for recording of 'Water is Wide From: paddymac Date: 10 Oct 99 - 12:32 PM Don't forget versions by The Wolfe Tones, and, of course, Pete Seeger. The song is soooo wide-spread that there are probably more recorded versions of it than any one person has time to listen to. |
Subject: RE: Help: Looking for recording of 'Water is Wide From: Dale Rose Date: 10 Oct 99 - 12:54 PM Just what I was thinking, paddymac. In fact, while you were posting, I was looking at the Folk Music Index to see what they had listed. Here is their list, but do note that quite a few of the albums are not available at all anymore, though some CDs have been issued, as is the case with the Maura O'Connell version: 1.Baez, Joan. Very Early Joan, Vanguard VSD 79446/7, LP (1982), cut#A.06 2.Beers Family. Golden Skein, Biograph BLP-12054, LP (1972), cut# 1 3.Beers Family. Introducing the Beers Family, Columbia MS-6705, LP (196?), cut#A.07 4.Beers, Robert. Art of the Psaltery, Prestige International INT 13028, LP (196?), cut# 8 5.Davies, Bruce. Wi' Lichtsome He'rt, Rothes RR 007, CD (1997), cut# 3 6.Hester, Carolyn. Caroline Hester, Tradition TLP 1043, LP (1961), cut#A.02 7.Hinton, Sam. Wandering Folk Song, Folkways FA 2401, LP (1967), cut# 4 8.Killen, Lou and Sally. Bright Shining Morning, Front Hall FHR 006, LP (1975), cut#B.02 9.MacNeil, Madeline. Madeline MacNeil Sings Patchwork, Skyline DD-103, LP (197?), cut# 8 10.New Seekers. New Seekers, Capitol T 2319, LP (196?), A.03 11.O'Connell, Maura. Just in Time, Philo 1124, LP (1988), cut# 6 12.Riddle, Almeda. Granny Riddle's Songs and Ballads, Minstrel JS-203, LP (1977), cut#B.05
Just a couple of notes: for whatever reason, that album by the Seekers was listed in the US as being by the NEW Seekers, creating a bit of confusion with the later group. Almeda Riddle was a noted folksinger from nearby Heber Springs, Arkansas. |

Subject: RE: Tune Req: water is wide recordings From: Whistle Stop Date: 22 Nov 00 - 09:56 AM I was going to mention the Karla Bonoff rendition, but Mike beat me to it. It's very nice, with backing vocals by James Taylor, and keyboard by Garth Hudson. It was originally on her second album ("Restless Nights"). For an instrumental version, Ed Gerhardt did a nice fingerstyle guitar arrangement recently on his CD of love songs (I think it was called "Counting The Ways"). |

Subject: RE: Help: Looking for recording of Water is Wide From: mmb Date: 20 Oct 02 - 05:52 PM Back in June of 1973, good friends Bill Spence and Fennig's All-Stars were musicians at my wedding, and gave us the first "public" copy of their first vinyl album, "The Hammered Dulcimer." If my memory isn't completely shot, one of the cuts on that album is an instrumental version of "The Water is Wide." Fox Hollow faithful will recall that Evelyn Beers' accompaniment was on the psaltry, not the hammered dulcimer. |

Subject: RE: Help: Looking for recording of Water is Wide From: Kaleea Date: 21 Oct 02 - 04:55 AM Gee, I just remembered it being on an old Peter, Paul & Mary record--the one from which I learned the song in the first place. Wonder how many of the above mentioned recordings heard it from them 1st, or maybe from Pete Seeger or Burl Ives or some other singer of American folk songs? |
