President Obama's ancestry has always been a hot topic. Between the birther debates that the Supreme Court dismissed last month to the country's differing opinions about his race, the commander-in-chief's biological roots have long been a hot-button issue.

But the most recent discovery into the president's complicated genealogy will likely fuel even more chatter.

According to the New York Times, a team of genealogists has discovered the president's slave ancestry.

As the son of a Kenyan father and white American mother, Obama is an African-American in the most literal sense. But until now Obama's African American cred in a more contemporary sense had been a source of debate, since unlike most American blacks he was not thought to have descended directly from enslaved Africans.

However, the researchers say that not only did the president descend from an enslaved African, his ancestor was likely the first ever documented black slave in America. Furthermore, Obama's slave heritage unfurls from perhaps the most unlikely familial line: his white mother....

There's lots on the web now about Frank Davis being Obama's likely father. Just do a web search and you'll find the articles, books and videos. Davis was a political activist that Obama's mama slept with. So, Obama's people counter the Davis stuff with this bullshit. So funny. They make up a story where Obama's not just a descendant of slaves, he's a descendant of America's FIRST African slave. So funny.

While I believe it's possible Songwronger is just a teeny bit obsessed with Obama, his reference was the Huffington post.

Doesn't really mean anything, but it's interesting. That's the main thing my mom cared about when she did genealogical research: the stories about ancestors. One guy enlisted in the Continental Army when he was 91 years old, fought in the revolution, and applied for a pension some time after that.

Having a guy in my family tree who'd escaped from indentured servitude and been sentenced to "servitude for life" in 1640, well over a century before the USA was the USA would be quite the story. Most of us can't do such a detailed search, but imagine if the New York Times could delve into your history!

One of MY ancestors (around 1855) told his sister that he helped slaves escape from the South, cross the Ohio into Illinois, and then take the across the Mississippi and sold them back into slavery in Missouri.

I'm not particularly proud of him, but then that was 90 years or so before I was born. Frankly, I don't really care -- after he told his sister this story he was never seen again.

I think that if you checked your own mitochondrial DNA you'd find all SORTS of "racial" background...assuming you're a member of the human race.

The report about Obama's ancestry was made by the genealogical researcher who happened to be curious enough to do a little research on his own, and with NO EVIDENCE that anyone in Obama's family or in "the party" instigated or encouraged the search.

It has been reviewed by Ancestry dot com, which is indisputably the largest and most credible resource for ancestry research, who have released their opinion with NO EVIDENCE that Obama, or his family, or anyone associated with "the party" was involved.

Although this is almost a "non-news" item, I do consult a fair number of news sources on a daily basis, and I've seen NO comments from anyone associated with the Obama campaign, with the exception of "polite replies" to a few muckraking reporters.

Of course we can't blame Wrongsonger, since he got that new "hands off radio." When he says "classical" it tunes to the clearest classical station. When he says "rockabilly," that's what it tunes to. When he leans out the window, shakes his fist and yells "FUCKIN' ASSHOLE" at some idiot who cut him off in traffic, it goes to Rush Limbaugh. I fail to see a problem. Most of us with ancestors in US for a couple of hundred years are going to be found to have African DNA I think. If NBC, New York Times, CBC, NPR have reported this, and Ancestry.com reported it, and expert genealogists using both property records and marriage records and DNA have come up with this been a likely conclusion..what is the problem? America is a racial mix. Anything of course can be used to stay stupid and racist things, but the bare facts seem pretty uncontroversial to me...mg

Seems to me he is attempting to throw some light on the dirty ytricks used by the political classes to keep us all divided.

There are enough legitimate reasons to speak against Obama if that is one's wont, but why for research someone else did about his ancestry? "What this means is that whites and Asians will get suspended for things that blacks don't get suspended for," because school officials will try to level punishments despite groups' different infraction rates, predicted Hans Bader, a counsel at the Competitive Enterprise Institute. Bader is a former official in the Education Department's Office for Civil Rights, and has sued and represented school districts and colleges in civil-rights cases.

"It is too bad that the president has chosen to set up a new bureaucracy with a focus on one particular racial group, to the exclusion of all others," said Roger Clegg, the president of the Center for Equal Opportunity.

So blacks are discriminated against when they're punished. Punished at a 'disproportionate' rate. The E.O. says that rate needs to be brought into 'proportion.'

ABC as a matter of fact. But I had nothing to do with the national news. My responsibility was the local news in Eastern Washington State's Tri-Cities area (Pasco, Kennewick, and Richland). But I did have to deal with a few local politicians, not to mention news from the Hanford Nuclear Reservation just up the pike from Richland.

Fascinating job. I learned a lot! But the pay was lousy, as were the hours, so I eventually quit and took a job as a straight board announcer (disc jockey) in a prestigious classical music station in Seattle. Good hours, I got to listen to a lot of music I like as I sat there with my feet propped up and a cup of coffee in my hand.

And the pay was great!!

However, I never forgot what I learned at the Tri-Cities station. I can spot "spin" from several miles off!
