Subject: 3 New Guthrie songs of Spanish Civil War
From: GeoffLawes
Date: 15 Jan 17 - 11:34 AM

In the current Newsletter of the International Brigades Memorial Trust ( January 2017 edition) Jim Jump, secretary of the IBMT, reports that last October three previously unheard songs written by Woody Guthrie, about the Spanish Civil War, were "recited" at a public performance by Will Kauffman. Will Kauffman discovered them in the archives of the Woody Guthrie Center in Tulsa Oklohoma and was given permission to recite them on condition that the songs were not transcribed or recorded. Can anyone tell us anything more about the songs such as their titles? And why would the Guthrie family want to limit access to these songs ?
The IBMT Newsletter can be read here

Sorry, meant to say in the above post that the item on the Woody Guthrie songs appears at the bottom of page 12, running on to the top of page 13 of the newsletter.

Maybe the family would consider Billy Bragg...

Will Kauffman kindly replied to an email about these songs and says "The titles I've got that are explicitly targeted at Franco or that reference him in passing are:

Break with Franco

Spanish Rebel

Stop Franco

Curses for Franco
Talking Lost Love Blues

Enda Franco's Line

Screwball Cannonball

Thanks Will.

Does anyone have any more information/lrics/links about these songs?

Woody habitually wrote things and filed them away, perhaps to do something with them later. I mean the man was compulsive about writing.
During my time in NYC I would often stop by to visit Marjorie Guthrie, Woody's 2nd wife, and Arlo's mother. I had the good fortune to be there the day she brought the filing cabinets that Woody had filled with stuff to the office. To my immense pleasure she set me trying to sort things (a task akin to cleaning the Augean Stables). I never saw those particular pieces, but I saw some stuff that has never seen the light of day.
