Elon Musk is my man, he not only got the damn rocket built, but he had fun doing it. And he's not averse to a good advertisement, putting a Spaceman in a sportscar and getting good shots of it departing Earth. And a view of the dashboard message panel reading "Don't Panic!" (God bless Douglas Adams).

I watched this on my laptop live and found the experience not just exciting, but charming, to boot.

You just gotta know this guy has read "The Man Who Sold The Moon" by Heinlein.

Let's get the romance back into the cosmos.

For the same reason that people have always explored the unknown. To quote a well known TV series...

to explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life and new civilizations, to boldly go where no man has gone before.

Makes even more sense when you look at what we are doing to this planet!

I just feel the expense is wicked when people are in dire need here on Earth.
To boldly go is a luxury I don't believe we can afford. Neither should the producers of Star Trek boldly split infinitives :)

Forgive my utter ignorance of astronomy, but is there any planet within striking distance where humans could live? I thought none has enough oxygen, the correct temperature, sufficient water etc.

The orbit is a MARS orbit intercept orbit (it is heliocentric). I think even The Saviour (or one of them, anyway) made a remark, when served a grand repast, that the poor we'll always have with us.

But Greg,
In the asteroid belt orbit won't the paint get scratched?

I bet no one expected the Tesla to have an asteroid collision sending it willy nilly back to Earth and landing at Mara Lago at a cool 50,000 km per hour...because it would burn up.

Sniiiff - I can smell the Tesla now. I love burning Lithium in the morning.

To boldly go is a luxury I don't believe we can afford.

Can we afford not to look for alternatives to our present destructive behaviour? You are looking at short term solutions rather than the survival of the species. What matter if we save some people today if we lose the entire planet tomorrow? The technology being developed in this type of venture does not just send us into space but could well provide solutions for bigger problems than the ones you mention.

In my opinion.

Or, let's put it another way. When the great library was built in Alexandria I am sure there were some naysayers who said that the money could be better spent feeding the starving peoples of Egypt. Yet by building it the great thinkers of the time were encouraged to lay the foundations of modern science and medicine, giving unaccountably greater benefits than if the money had been spent on extending the lives of a handful of people. May sound harsh but the good of the many must come first.

That's all true, Dave, but is there indeed any planet suitable for colonisation within a reasonable distance?
I strongly suspect the motive behind this rocket thing is a speculative eye on charging vast sums to wealthy adventurers to experience space travel in large numbers.
And yes, 'the poor are always with us' just as long as money which would help them is squandered on jaunts into space.

That is a million miles (or light years?) off the point Eliza. Think outside the box! The by-product of the exercise is the development of new technology. Going back to my library example, the one in Alexandria was built to house books and scrolls. The result was far beyond that. This has already happened with space travel. Things like carbon monoxide detectors and telemedicine are a direct result of the space race and will save countless lives.

Throwing money at the poor never has and never will resolve the underlying issues. Developing new technologies will help far more people than giving money to help salve the conscience of the more wealthy.

Again, in my opinion.

One needn't 'throw money at the poor' though Dave. One can do it differently by using the money to fund scientific projects such as vaccines, crop fertility, water sourcing, sustainable sanitation, re-building schemes and so on.

I've often heard people say that things such as non-stick pans etc are a direct result of space technology. I expect a starving African or a woman trying to feed her children on meagre benefits in a city slum will be really chuffed to know this...
To my mind it's all a case of priorities.

'Twas ever thus I expect...

But to be fair (you can tell I'm a Libran can't you?) there are many philanthropic rich people. Not everyone is a greedy self-indulgent piggy. :)

I take it, then, that you feel that Elon Musk is a 'greedy self-indulgent piggy'

I take it, then, that you maintain that Elon Musk is NOT spending his money in the sure and certain hope of making an obscenely large amount more?

Misrepresentations of everything I said I'm afraid, Greg.

The throwing money at the poor comment was a factual statement indicating that something else needs to be done of we want to cure the problem rather than the systems.

I do not maintain anything like you said as I am sure he will make a large amount of money. There is no reason, as Eliza has already said, that he should not make money and help the underprivileged.

Amongst the detritus of new technology there are some wonderful benefits. I have already pointed out a couple and I am sure your reference to the iPhone stems from its frivolous rather than more serious advantages.

Come out of combative mode and think where we would be if not for penicillin, electricity and wireless communications. Not all inventions are bad or frivolous and the technology for space exploration is a gateway for all sorts of other things.

There is no evidence for or against but his foundation, which focuses its grantmaking in the areas of renewable energy, science and engineering education, and pediatric health, seems to indicate that he may do a bit more to help than you or I.

There is nothing wrong with making lots of money as long as some of it goes to the right places. See above.

Amongst the garbage there are always some gems.

Still, whatever, Greg. I am not going to get into a slanging match about it. It is just my opinion and you are perfectly entitled to rubbish it as you will. Just seems a little strange that you use the very technology that you scorn to do so :-)

It was mentioned to me, since I didn't work it out for myself, that the music playing over the feed from Tesla was "Space Oddity" the David Bowie version. And that David Bowie played the part of Nikola Tesla in the movie: "The Prestige".

You could 'hear' the music as the camera focused on the Tesla dashboard and the words displayed: "Don't Panic!"

As to money. It's a subject worth going into. The main point of economy to be made is that Tesla/ Elon Musk have made an impressive debut of a heavy lifting rocket system which is substantially less expensive than anything NASA has got. It was a tour-de-force of capability on a budget. So, in fact, it enables the first world to accomplish space tasks and have more left over to do other things with which it would not otherwise have.

Give the guy a break.

He can't save the planet, but he can show us how in one aspect.
He popularised the electric car, by making a desireable article in a land of egregiously rich people with money to waste. And moved on down the spectrum to more affordable ones (relatively). Without a hint of reproach for the profligate car drivers, he gave us a vision, and all other car manufacturers are promising to follow his lead.

He promised to build a 100 MW/129 MWh battery for New South Wales in 100 days. And did it. And got paid. Willingly.

He is adamant, the most sensible energy is solar (Wind & Hydro are solar BTW) and a lot of it needs to be stored temporarily. Batteries are not the only answer but given the market in transport, it transfers to may other areas.

He is a thinker. And his reward is being right. He was right about PayPal, he was right about Tesla.
Money just gives him the time to think. And I am sure he employs many people as clever as him.

He won't save the world on his own, but he greases the wheels, and he has a big pot of grease.

The reality of Elon is to go back to square one and restart from the beginning no matter how much is invested. He is not a gambler who tries to throw good money after bad. He does not fall into the sunk cost trap. He stopped and began again in the engineering of his first cars.

GM uses a brute hammer approach to 'make it fit' in comparison.

I listened to an excellent lecture by a local engineering professor who went to Africa to put together a water purification/ pumping station for a school and surrounding community. The engineering they utilized was precisely the sort of thing the Tesla people have been working on, utilizing a minimum of energy and over-fancy technology by putting together something that can be locally serviced and repaired.

Guess what model car he drives?

Absolutely. At $35,000 USD I'm surprised everyone isn't driving one. Especially in Africa. - is a short-termism response.

Musk looks into the future and sees a need for solar powered (but stored) energy. He makes sports cars that can out-accelerate all but the purpose built rockets and sells them. That feeds capital into a cheaper car, and then a cheaper one still. He blazes a trail, with a market that likes fashion and can pay for it.

Meanwhile other car manufacturers see him succeed and don't want to be left behind. Has anyone seen the Mahindra EO2 electric car? Hardly luxury.

Africa has the sun, but not necessarily the wherewithal to fund an infrastructure but maybe it will overtake the west's thirst for fossil fuels as it accumulates the west's standard of living.

Worthwhile improvements take time, while the west is still wedded to petroleum. Rome, Day - do we ever learn?

Before the price of oil 'tanked', pun intended, I was on an oil project in the far north, and the client representative, a long-time oil man in these parts, had let it be known that he was going to order a Tesla. I didn't get the details, but I expect he was going to hold out for an all-wheel drive version, which might not be off the drawing board yet. A couple three years ago I got to visit Southern Cal. and there were Teslas to be seen there, not in a stream but on a daily basis.

And the star vehicle for Michelle Dockery in her effort to distance herself from her role in Downton Abbey, the protagonists commandeer a Tesla then have the problem of finding a charging station before they get marooned.

techno ain't gonna save the world,

But it will solve the problem caused by the last profligate fashion.

The world will survive, it always has. But don't expect it to be like you want it to be.

Humanity? - survival doubtful - the biggest pollution, and source of other pollutants is the human race.

Meanwhile John Goodenough is heading research on lithium batteries that will surpass his original ground-breaking work on them. With the rise of electric vehicles there will be many companies trying to produce a better battery. When their cost effectiveness gets to a critical point we will all want one on the side of our house. That day is foreseeable. A milestone IMNSHO.

30 years ago PV was cheap enough and preferable to diesel generators in Papa New Guinea in villages. All about infrastructure & supply chain. Now look at the market.

My hope is that the human race will wake up to its voracity. But I don't hold much hope.

Greg F.: LOL AM looking forward to your wheel and fire spiel. I agree that techno won't save the world. My point is that techno will enable us to flee the world and go find another one. Tickets to Alpha Centauri anyone?

My references: A Canticle for Leibowitz or Heinlein's story Solution Unsatisfactory I don't insist you rub ideas together to that level, but I've heard the old 'plaints about spending money on space when children are starving in ____________ since Apollo days. Legitimate or not there's nothing 'new' there.

I've no quarrel with spending money on space. NASA is woefully, and in my opinion, idiotically, underfunded. As for the hungry kids, we SHOULD be able to do BOTH.

Now, the COMMERCIALIZATION of space is another matter.

Hadn't thought of A Canticle for Leibowitz in years!

Wheel & fire still in the works.    ;>)

Canticle For Leibowitz is one of my select 'Paragon of Christianity' writings. Its been done quite well for audio, as well. Heard a critical passage of it one night on the car radio driving north in New Hampshire to go hiking in the White Mountains.

"'Eat! Eat! Eat!' The Pope's Child cried."

I'm warnin ya, if you make it to Mars yur gonna miss 'fresh air and pressure'.

The chemical composition of Mars' atmosphere makes it smell like a silent but deadly hot fart.

'Smell' is a subjective experience. A dinosaur fart and a Martian 'hot fart' are separated in space as well as time. Doctor Who has had both experiences no doubt and s/he is still with us. Inherit the booth.

Gotcha! By gum, you almost made sense that time. For the record, there is some sulfur smell, but when it's gonna kill ya, ya can't smell it. Your nose detectors die first.

I'm happy to hear your comprehension is improving. If A word to the wise is sufficient, you are already gaining clarity in as little as 8 words. Good job. Keep an eye on that confusion, it could be the harbinger of a
brain fog
Get some fresh air on Earth, forget Mars.

errrrrrr........... not what they tell you.

Smell is the last sense to die, they say. (Don't ask how they know). And given that it is found in creatures without ears or eyes - I rather go with that view.
