Subject: Shane MacGowan and article links
From: keberoxu
Date: 08 Jul 19 - 02:44 PM

Well this might jinx the whole thing ...
every time somebody starts a thread
with Shane MacGowan's name in the thread title,
somebody out there presumes the worst,
reads the thread,
and then posts saying, "don't scare me like that!"

So will it offend or frighten anybody if I say he's very much alive?

Don't know if anybody has already linked to these articles.

"together for 32 years and engaged for 11 years", you've got to admire that kind of circumspection, good old Shane.

Who's Shane McGowan? Is that the drunk guy from Blind River?

Formerly, lead-singer & songwriter of Irish-punk band, The Pogues. Has had something of a solo career since. In/famous for his drunkenness and his creativity.

It's Mac, not Mc!

Have to be careful about these things,
as there is a
Shane McGowan
and a
Shane MacGowan.

As better Mudcatters than I have pointed out
on earlier threads than this one.

he first thing that comes to mind when I think of him is "great songwriter", "famous tippler" is somewhere down the list. Christy Moore and others have said something like "In 100 years from now we'll still be singing his songs". I don't know if that's true but I'll be singing them
M as long as I'm able.

On Saturday night on Oz TV music programme Rage, there was a special on Julien Temple and Shane MacGowan. I annoyed my Hubby (how unusual!) by whistling or singing along to most of the songs by The Pogues. Unfortunately, there were *only* 15 video clips of Shane with or without The Pogues. I have all of their albums.

Shane MacGowan + Julien Temple Special

Some other people performing on the clips included The Dubliners, Kirsty MacColl, Nick Cave, Sinead O'Connor.

The Julien Temple part of the show was some of his music video clips which he has produced.

i think his out put as a songwriter of good songs is insignificant compared to MacColl.. Fairy tale of new York any others. As a singer he is niot someone i would listen too very much. i respect him for overcoming drink sand drug addiction

Hehe, OP said (back in 2019, I know)people would see a thread about Shane McGowan and instantly assume he was dead - I saw it and realised that "Wow, he's still alive!" I saw a documentary about him earlier this year (maybe the one mentioned by Jeri?) but thought for sure I had heard of him dying shortly after that. Glad to see I was wrong.

As Oscar Wilde once commented, the rumours about his death were greatly exaggerated.

Well there goes about 50 years of misinformation on my part!! I always thought it was Oscar Wilde but I'm happy to modify my internal memory-data to attribute it to Mark Twain instead. Thanks for correcting me.

Well Dave Swarbrick read his own obituary in the Daily Telegraph 17 years before he actually died.
