Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Ballade De Mercy From: Monique Date: 12 Feb 21 - 06:41 AM Here's the more literal translation I came up to, with some notes. BALLAD 15 - BY WHICH FRANÇOIS VILLON CRIES MERCY TO EVERYONE To Carthusians and Celestines monks, To beggars and devotees, To loafers and shoe slappers/scamps(1), To servants and cute/elegant girls Wearing surcoats and tight-fitted tunic dresses, To presumptuous transfixed with love Without embarrassment wearing tawny boots(2), To all people I cry mercy. To young girls showing their nipples, To have widely more guests, To crooks, troublemakers, To tumblers dragging trunks, To scatterbrains, to jokers, Who go whistling in [groups of] five and six To widows (3) and puppets/Virgin Mary figurines (4), To all people I cry mercy. Except to the traitor mastiff dogs(5) That made me eat hard [bread] crusts, Chew many evenings and mornings,(6) [So much] that now I don't fear three droppings(7). I'd make farts and burps for them; I cannot, for I am seated. Furthermore, to avoid quarrels, To all people I cry mercy. Let them have their fifteen ribs (8) crumpled With big, strong and massive mallets, Clubs and such balls. To all people I cry mercy. (1) young men who wanted to attract young ladies' attention would go out of the church flapping their "patins" – (Shoe consisting of a plate -generally wooden- more or less richly decorated, resting on the ground by a more or less thick sole, and fixed to the foot by means of straps. - Other sources say it means "galopin" = scalawag, scamp (2) Tawny boots were actually laced ankle boots and the tawny color showed publicly that the person was in love/a lover. -I'm not really sure "méhaing" to mean "embarrassment/shame" but the primary meaning of "mutilation" doesn't seem to fit. (3) Some versions have "marmousets" = young children (4) A "mariotte" was an image / figurine of Virgin Mary (hence the word = "little Mary") or a puppet. Could it mean here well-behaved young ladies? Mystère et boule de gomme ! (5) The bishop of Orléans and his officers who jailed him (in Fr.). (6) Some versions have " Et boire eau maintz soirs et matins," = "And drink water many evenings and mornings" 7) I couldn't make three droppings (8) At that time people believed men had only 15 ribs while women had 16 because the Bible says that God took a rib from Adam to make Eve. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Mille Anni Passi Sunt From: RunrigFan Date: 22 Feb 21 - 11:09 PM I don't know the lyrics or translation, but I know a bit of info about the band. I'm not going to bore you But Corvus Corax was formed in 1989 in (East) Germany. They are known for playing neo-Medieval music using authentic instruments. Their name is the Latin name for the common raven. The band often uses bagpipes as the solo instrument; their live performances attract attention with the bizarre look of the musicians being reminiscent of ancient Greek myths: half-naked, dressed in unusual clothes, wearing primitive tribal decorations, often tattooed. They have gone through many changes, but have been together for 30 years. They released their first album Ante Casu Peccati (1989) Congregatio (1991) Inter Deum Et Diabolum Semper Musica Est (1993) Tritonus (1995) Live auf dem Wäscherschloß (1998) Viator (1998) Tempi Antiquii (1999, compilation of works from 1988 to 1992) Mille Anni Passi Sunt (2000 – limited edition of 2000 copies issued as 'MM') In Electronica Remixe (2000) Seikilos (2002) Gaudia Vite (live) (2003) Best of Corvus Corax (2005) Cantus Buranus (2005) Cantus Buranus Live in Berlin (2006) Venus Vina Musica (2006) Kaltenberg anno MMVII (2007) Cantus Buranus II Cantus Buranus – Das Orgelwerk Live in Berlin Sverker (2011) Sverker Live at Summer Breeze & Castlefest (2011) Gimlie (2013) Ars Mystica – Selectio 1989–2016 (2016) Der Fluch der Drachen (2017) Skál (2018) Tanzwut EP (1996) Corvus Corax erzählen Märchen aus alter Zeit EP (2000) Hymnus Cantica CDS (2002) They have performed all around the world, playing to many crowds and still make music today. They draw inspiration from Carmina Burana, with many songs in Latin, some in Old French/Ottican, Irish to name a few The original members are Castus Rabensang, Meister Selbfried who were researchers in the music |

Subject: RE: Songs of Corvus Corax (German Band) From: Reinhard Date: 23 Feb 21 - 02:22 AM "Ougenweide" is a song in Mittelhochdeutsch (Middle High German, 1050-1350), not Romanian. It was a signature song of the wonderful medieval folk rock band Ougenweide who recorded it in 1973 as the title track of their eponymous album, "Ougenweide". Corvus Corax covered it in 1999 on their album Tempi Antiquuii. Up to now I didn't care vary much for this band or similar ones like In Extremo which seem to be mostly bad goth / fake medieval stage show. But some of the tracks Runrig Fan linked to on YouTube are surprisingly nice. |

Subject: RE: Songs of Corvus Corax (German Band) From: Monique Date: 05 Jan 22 - 01:48 AM This is OLD French (or written in Old French style), not just "French". Nobody understands "s'i preut". |
Subject: RE: Songs of Corvus Corax (German Band) From: RunrigFan Date: 05 Jan 22 - 09:15 AM That's from a website; lyrics from booklet from Venus Vina Musica from 2006 |
Subject: RE: Songs of Corvus Corax (German Band) From: Monique Date: 05 Jan 22 - 11:49 AM YouTube recording. Does your booklet say who wrote the lyrics? If you enter "s'i preut" into Google, the only pages you get are these lyrics. If you put only "preut", you'll find what it used to mean (English dictionary). "Preut" wasn't a verbal form AFAIK. Here is the meaning of "estraine" and here is the meaning of the verb "demener" (you'll find "demaine" only once in the corpus). What looks weird is "Au jardin mon père entrai": it needs a preposition, you can't have "In garden my father (I) went in/entered", you need "of": we don't have and never had the German genitive case "im Garten meineS VaterS in any Oïl dialect. |

Subject: RE: Songs of Corvus Corax (German Band) From: Monique Date: 06 Jan 22 - 03:19 AM I'm sorry, I don't know where you found the translation but it doesn't hold water. "entrai", "trouvai", are 1st person singular, indicative simple past tense. "ferai" is 1st person singular, indicative future tense and it can't be any other person. "A chapel in a roof" for "Un chapelet en ferai" is just nonsense. About "chapelet": "The French word "chapelet" is a derivative of the word "chapeau" (hat), the old form of which was chapel. Originally (c. 1200), it designated a headdress, a crown of flowers and became a term for religious use by analogy with the crowns of roses, with which the heads of Marian statues were adorned (cf. rosary). Synonyms: suite, series, parade. We say a rosary of roses for a series of roses linked together longitudinally." (French Wiki, translated by Google and edited by me). "Un chapelet en ferai": "Un" = a, one, "chapelet" = rosary, crown, wreath, garland, "en" = of it, "ferai" = will make. About "qui nous demaine": "qui" = who/that, "nous" = us (object, not subject), "demaine" = verb "demainer/démener" (link in one of my posts above) and not "demain" = tomorrow. I forgot to translate "Une autre amie en ferai" = I'll make another lover (amie at that time didn't only mean "friend"). Btw "I will send it to you" as a translation for "À mon amie l'enverai" is wrong, it means "To my beloved (I) will send it" [To my beloved it (I) will send]. Those are just a few things. Re. to your last link, it's an Occitan-English translator. I already said that Occitan isn't French and vice versa just like English isn't Dutch though they are Germanic languages. |
Subject: RE: Songs of Corvus Corax (German Band) From: RunrigFan Date: 06 Jan 22 - 10:26 AM Translated from Occitan to English |
Subject: RE: Songs of Corvus Corax (German Band) From: Monique Date: 06 Jan 22 - 11:28 AM These lyrics are NOT in Occitan, whether old or modern, in any variety of it from any of the Occitan speaking area, be it in France, Italy or Spain. Most of the song is modern French with a few Old French words ("estraine", "demaine", this "preut" thing), some old spellings ("i" instead of "y", "sai" instead of "sais", "envoi" instead of "envoie"), some turns of phrase used in poetry ("Trois fleurs d'amour i trouvai" instead of "J'y trouvai trois fleurs d'amour") and omission of the subject pronoun. |
