Subject: Lyr Add: ANTHEM FOR IRELAND From: GUEST,Frank Foley, Anthem for Ireland, lyrics corr Date: 24 Mar 01 - 07:28 PM ANTHEM FOR IRELAND Oh Land of Love, we bless thee gentle Mother Oh Land of Light, the Jewel of the Sea Oh Land of Joy, where brother shall greet brother And all thy souls shall dwell in harmony And when the clouds of torrent and of sorrow Flee with the dark at rising of the sun And shall clasp hands in happiness tomorrow When we have learned that all who dwell in Thee are One. All wounds shall heal, unkindness be forgiven All hurts forgot, as in the darkest night No more shall we by war nor strife be ridden All Ireland's Children face the future bright Chorus: One God shall reign in hearts His flame has lighted And He shall lead our people to the sun One heart, one soul, one land by Love United Where we shall live in peace until His Will be done Chorus |
Subject: RE: LYR ADD: Anthem for Ireland From: Malcolm Douglas Date: 24 Mar 01 - 08:54 PM Any hint as to where this song comes from (presumably it's a modern composition), or what the tune might be? |
Subject: RE: LYR ADD: Anthem for Ireland From: Malcolm Douglas Date: 25 Mar 01 - 11:14 AM As it turns out, I can answer my own question. The lyric was written by Desmond Leslie; the tune is The Londonderry Air. |
Subject: RE: LYR ADD: Anthem for Ireland From: GUEST Date: 21 Sep 06 - 11:10 AM The tune to this peace of music is the same as "O Danny Boy (the pipes, the pipes are calling)"... As Irishman, I'd like to point out it's Derry, not LondonDerry! |
Subject: RE: LYR ADD: Anthem for Ireland From: GUEST,Richard Goff Date: 24 May 07 - 11:56 AM After listening closely (several times) to the De Dannan recording, I think Mr. Douglas' lyrics need a few more corr4ections. In second line, I think it is "fair jewel" rather than "the jewel" In first line of second stanza "torrent" should be "torment." In third stanza third line "ridden" should be "riven" In last line of chorus, "until His Will be done" doesn't make sense to me; it's hard to make out exactly the second and third words of this phrase, but I think the phrase should read "until this world be done." Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Anthem for Ireland From: Celtaddict Date: 04 Jan 08 - 04:10 PM I am pretty sure the last line, "until His Will be done" refers to the will of God, as referenced in the lines before it. However, does anyone know when Desmond Leslie wrote this? And is this the same Desmond Leslie that was a UFO expert, novelist, writer of 'outer space' music, and who famously punched critic Bernard Levin on 'That Was the Week That Was' in 1963? |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Anthem for Ireland From: MartinRyan Date: 04 Jan 08 - 04:44 PM Son of Sir Shane Leslie of Castle Leslie in Monaghan, one-time Spitfire pilot...etc. etc. etc. etc. etc. Some character! Can't pin down that it was he, for now, but it wouldn't surprise me! Regards |
