Rough week for '60s folk sidepeople. Lincoln Mayorga, who was Phil Ochs's piano player when Ochs toured behind his A&M Records albums ("Pleasures of the Harbor," "Rehearsals for Retirement," "Tape from California"), has died. Mayorga also had a distinguished and eclectic career as a classical and jazz pianist.

Lincoln Mayorga was the genius behind the accompaniment to Phil Ochs' "Outside of a Small Circle of Friends." I would maintain that his piano is what made the irony/sarcasm in that song work!

A few years ago, when Lincoln was still living in Chatham NY, a few of us led by Judy Staber put together an English-style Music Hall program for a few performances. We were lucky enough to have Lincoln as our accompanist. A brilliant pianist, recognized as a leading interpreter of Gershwin's music. RIP Lincoln.

Here's the obit with career details - Lincoln was one of a kind: a celebrated classical pianist who was at home with jazz, pop, and more. Founder of two record labels - Sheffield Lab and Townhall Records, he was in demand in the studios as an arranger and composer, and he helped countless other musicians over the years. He brought American and Soviet musicians together during the Cold War to record The Moscow Sessions.
