Subject: HearMe Question for Jon
From: MMario
Date: 06 Mar 00 - 10:06 PM

JOn - please correct me if I'm wrong:

the hearme is based on your website, right, not hosted by your computer? This means that you do not have to be connected for others of us to go in and use it?

Just beginning to realize what a resource you've handed us if this is true.....

Yes MMario seems if you have got it right.

The Hearme Servers are all on their sight. I did explain some of the rules of hearme (the program - not mine)in a previous thread but as far as I understand it, in this instance they use the address on that one page on my webspace and that becomes a private room for all accessing that particular page and all the hosting (execpt the initial link) is done by them.

The original Hearme suggestion came from Jim (JAB) and Max promptly put up a room using Mudcat. There were howeve time out prblems ( I think 28 econds)using that one and as MC is developing longer term solutions I offered one that while still retaining a cut off, extended it first to 5 minutes and later to 10 minutes.

I was just another step in this chain and have tried to help but the original pionering using Hearme was not my work. Just glad it can be used and seems to work for all.

OH and MM, one addition, there is a limatation for all users of this style/ version of hearme. The talk button needs to be held down which is akward for some players. I did also write a progam that seems to resolve that issue for some.

Jim, in this instance my hope is that whatever programs are used, the ultimate soultion is a MC one and I like to think that whatever I have come up with are temporary but workable and help to solve a short term problem (even though ICQ has fits and Hearme does not support Macs..)

Jon:

You are doing a GREAT Job with the "temporary solution".

That is what got me to thinking on how the Mudcat is evolving. We now have the Mudcat Songbook, the Midi Pages, the Mudcat Resources, the hearme site, the ICQ chat rooms and lists.... Aren't we becoming a distributed community? Isn't Mudcat evolving into something un-anticipated at the outset?

Difficult one that Jim, I firmly believe that certain things like MC live comunication channels should ultimately be under their (MC) control...

There are other resorces such as bbc's pages that I can see reasons for being maintned and possibly controlled elsewhere..

In the mean while comms wise we do our best...

Hi Jon,

I am having problems getting HearMe to work:

I can hear others, but my own mic setup seems to
cause problems. I have tried the Audio Configure tool,
but all I am able to get is scrambled noise.

I have tried 2 different mics (both in working order),
I can record mic input offline in Windows so mic+
sound card are OK. I have tried various combinations
of mic recording level and sound playback level.
Sound volume controls are set as per "advanced
configuration instructions". Mic playback is muted.
Machine details are: Pentium 166 MMX, Win98, IE 4.0, 28.8K modem

Could it be a bandwidth problem? But if it is, how come I can still hear others?

Henrik

Hi Henrick. I am not sure on this one but I would suspect it is a bandwidth problem. Hearme do not specify a minimum connection speed but the rest of you spec is fine and I ran happily on a P133 for a while.

I don't know why the broadcasting seems to go before the playback but that has been known to happen to others although the only cases that I am aware of involved under powered PCs.

The problem I have with the bandwith idea is that although Jeri has a 56k modem, I am sure that she can only get a 28.8K connection with her ISP and she sounds fine.

I agree that it sounds as if everything is configured correctly and I would suggest that you contact hearme's technical support at http://www.hearme.com/support/support.html?to=hearme-support. I'm sorry I can't be of any real assistance.

When I try to log on through the "Click here" button, all I see is the Hear me Logo button, the help button and the advanced audi configuration button. There is no place to log on or anything else for that matter. I followed the instructions on the help FAQ about removing the program and reinstalling it and nothing has changed. I'm getting more than the grey box, but not much more! I am using netscape, Win 95. 200 Mhz and 56K modem. Any help out there as to what I'm doing wrong? TIA

It does sound like the known Hearme/ Netscape problem and MMario has given you what in fact is Hearme's suggested solution. You may however like to try a couple of ideas I had and posted to http://www.mudcat.org/thread.CFM?threadID=24726. I can't guarantee their success but one solved a problem for me and the other tested out OK. If you wish to use Netscape for Hearme, the only other info I can give you is that Dave O found that removing Netscape and then reinstalling it, cured a similar problem for him.

The following may be obvious - I'll take my chances. Kendall, you have to select "Make-a-room" and enter the room name each time you want to go there. The room doesn't exist unless someone's in it. The page defaults to the General Chats.

Hey Kendall,

Are you using IE or Netscape? I can never get Netscape to work right with Hearme anymore, so I always use IE.

If you're willing, I'd like to try an experiment. If you'll use the Make-A-Room option at 12 noon EST, using the name 'Aine', I'll try it from my end and let's see what happens. Remember to click on the little circle beside the room name as well as entering the name of the room.

Kendall, do you mean that you are getting sent back to the top of the entry page where the button saying join song circle is or that you are actually entering the song circle room. I am aware of a very intemittent fault on Aine's page (I've not had it happen on mine which uses the identical JavaScript) which causes the former but it is usually cleared by refreshing the page.

If you are entering the Song Circle room are you clicking the link below the "Make a room" option or the song circle button. If you are clicking on the link below, the only reasons I can think of are one that you have just blanked out the make a room name and not entered anything new(the Song Circle room has no name so they would point to the same room) or that whatever is being entered is not being accepted by the JavaScipt (a technical problem that I would need to look at).

sorry Aine, I didnt see your post in time. It is now3:35 pm. I created this room some time ago, and, as I said it worked fine. Now when I go to the song circle page, I click on Make a room, enter the name of the room I chose, put a dot in the O, then click the link below. It does not offer the window, just jumps back to the Welcome to Mudcat etc.

Subject: RE: HearMe Question for Jon

Yes Kendall, that is the Gremlin (one of 2) on Aine's page that I mentioned above.

The line that appears to be causing the trouble reads:

<a href="#" onclick="Other()">.... down to the </a>;

The useage of # with href is used to move to a bookmarked page and for some reason on Aine's page it seems to move to a non existant bookmark at the top of the page and on others, it acts on the onclick - why it should do one thing most of the time and the other occasionally is beyond me.

Perhaps this very intermittent and minor bug could be cleared by using a button rather than a hyper link for the other room options. The code could be deleted and replaced with something like:

<input type="button" value="Select a room and click here" onclick="Other()">

On installing:

At HearMe Voice Creator, it wants to:
Install C:\INTERNET\NETSCAPE\PROGRAM\plugins\npevp.dll
Replace C:\INTERNET\NETSCAPE\PROGRAM\plugins\nsevp.class
Install C:\INTERNET\NETSCAPE\PROGRAM\plugins\npjac.dll

The licence comes up but also
JaveScript Application
SmartUpdate internal failure (4)

then I'm connected & all works. (That is, I can connect
normally and the HearMe Demo works normally, too

then I close Netscape 4.73

on re-open, Welcome To The Mudcat HearMe Page! only opens 94% even if I give it lots of time

on clicking ClickHere the HearMe window opens and sometimes I can hear but I can't actually connect, type or talk. And I find that Netscape (including the HearMe window) is frozen.

Following the instructions to uninstall and reinstall makes no change.

Help.

Abby, there are problems which occur with Hearme and Netscape which nobody, including Hearme is able to explain and a few users have had to switch from Netscape to IE to be able to use Hearme although someone (I think DaveO) did find that he was able to go back to using Netscape after re-installing it (Netscape).

My own feeling is that the problem lies with Netscape's Smart update program but this is a guess on my part. I have found that clicking on this link while in Netscape can force a re-install although it is not guaranteed to work.

As for the failing to reach the "Welcome to the Mudcat Hearme Page". This is nothing to do with Hearme (the code is only executed whan you try to enter a room) and I can only guess that you have been unlucky and maybe had a bad connection or perhap's Aines page has been down on the occasions you have failed to connect. Sometimes when that sort of problem occurs, it is best to stop the current load and try to reload the page.

Thank you very much for your help and encouragement. Everything seems to work right now. But of course there's nobody there. (Maybe it only works when there's nobody else there.)

I think talking it out helped as I explained all the problems to my computer and your response. It seemed to take it well and understand my feelings and decided to work properly.

Communication is a marvelous thing, as is getting your problems off your chest.

Subject: RE: HearMe Question for Jon

Burke, your mic needs to be plugged into the mic socket of your soundcard. The sound card should be located at the back of your system unit. I know that seems a little vague but I have seen a setup with the mic in on the monitor but the normal is as I described. If in doubt, check your user manual if you have one.

As for configuration, once you are in Hearme, there is a mic configuration program you can use (click on the link). This utility may say it has detected a problem with your existing config and offer to change it. As a general rule, let it make changes - it seems to be right in cases of weird setups like mine which use 2 sound cards in 1 PC. When you have done that, test yor set up. The program is crude and the sound it plays back is not that good but it should give you some idea of levels. Take no notice of the meter, it tells lies - just go by the volume of sound you hear played back.

Mrs. Duck:

Quite possibly if you check your audio configuration on your computer you will find your microphone is turned off. Try double-clicking the speaker icon in the tray of your start bar. There is a box there for turning sound on or off for you mike.

Mrs Duck, you are not the first and you certainly won't be that last to make that discovery. It is easily done.

Thinking of things like that, when I worked at Hotpoint and I got a phone call reporting a dead terminal, my first question was "You have checked that it is plugged in and switched on?". You would be surprised at the number of intelligent people who can miss the most obvious things (and although I hate to admit it, I am one of them - not too sure about the inteligent though).

See you in Hearme sometime.

Lena, as long as you have your PC set up correctly for sound, if someone is speaking, you will have them. If you are talking there is a VU meter that may give you some idea that you are transmitting sound.

You could try clicking on the audio configuration link while in a hearme room. This will take you to a web page where you can get some idea as to what you are sounding like and set recording and playback levels. Go by what you hear rather than the meter though, the meter tells lies - the sound quality is not too good either.
