I'm afraid, Lyrinda, that the problem is in your ear. Stan very clearly sings "Upper Canadian".

I remember a friend of mine first hearing that recording back in the '70s, and responding with some indignation: "That's not Upper Canadian concrete and glass - it's Nova Scotian concrete and glass!" He was right. Stan was a Nova-Scotian-Upper-Canadian who had gotten it into his head that Upper Canada embodied all that was wrong with modernity, and Nova Scotia all that was right about the past. I think he got over that before too long.

'Upper Canada' was the pre-Confederation (1867) term for what we now call Ontario. In the 1970s, it was used in a kind of pejorative way to refer to Ontario.

Only The Almighty might 'have the ear of Mr Rogers' - he died tragically in 1983, the victim of a fire on board an aircraft.

I cleary hear this as "Upper Canadians" as it is also printed in the album's booklet.

I have listened closely to Stan Rogers' Fisherman's Wharf many times and have yet to hear the words "Upper Canadian". This seems to be simply copied from bot transcriptions from other websites. He sings very clearly, but I keep hearing "Perkin Eek" (perkinique?) or such "made of concrete and glass" and NOT anything even CLOSE to "Upper Canadian"! Anybody have the ear of Mr. Rogers who could ask him for the phrase - and its meaning? I keep thinking that it is the name of a ship - or perhaps a commercial development... And I LOVE that song!!!
