Aha !! The Gile Mear rides again !! The altercation that ensued upon his last visit to the Café is not to be repeated.

By the way, anyone interested in Macaronic Song can hear a short burst on Raidio na Gaeltachta this Sat, morning.

Guess who's singing, Philippa ??

Annraoi

If you want to sing a song in a language you don't know well, probably the best thing would be to have personal coaching. If that's not possible, then do what you can to learn the orthography [other threads have given links to sites with Irish lang. pronunciation guides; I think Aine can help by giving a link here] AND listen over and over to a good recording. Because learners usually need to have both the written word and a recording, I am sympathetic with people insisting on lyrics for a specific version of a song.

I think I'd be wasting my time trying to write out words phonetically. Unless we use a standardised phonetic system, such as used in dictionaries, not everyone will interpret the "phonetic" spelling the same way. And you also need to have the stress on the right syllables and the right rhythm of words within a phrase. It's ever so important to use your ears as well as your eyes!

Skarpi, click on the "Altan version" link above. See the many verses posted by Annraoi on 9 Dec. 98. I believe Mary Black sings verses 1, 2, 4 and 10, though I haven't got a recording at hand to double check this info.

Thank you, George Seto! I'll listen to my Mary Black version and attempt the phonetic translation myself.

O'Neal, here is a site with both a literal and a singable translation of the song, with the original Irish lyrics. Thanks, Lesley!

skarpi: Check your email tonight for posted lyrics.

Philippa: Sorry you feel that way. I'm trying to go back to my Irish roots and adding a song-sung-in-Gaelic to my repertoire is very important to me.

Aine': Any assistance on this request would be appreciated and thanked. Also, the english translation, so I know what I'm singing!

OK, Ms. P. -- But you still could do it standing on your head and whistling!

I made a mistake in the first of my links above, so I'll correct it now: STING VERSION
and no, I don't write phonetic versions of Irish lyrics, though I might try to help you with a word or two.

Having no knowledge of which dialect would be appropriate, I'm at a loss. Would Northern be a dialect?

I should correct my post above. I'm sure that Philippa could put the song into any dialect, and probably even Middle and/or Old Irish, whistle a tune and stand on her head at the same time, such is her knowledge and scholarship!

Dear o'neil and Cara,

In which dialect exactly would you want that phonetic translation? Philippa or I could do one, but it probably wouldn't be exactly what you've heard on a disc or tape.

I have the Mary Black version and would be happy to post the lyrics, if you still need them. Would you be willing to translate them phonetically?

and the previous thread include:
Sting version
chieftains' version
Mo Ghile Mear
Altan version [sic]
Jacobite songs

Unfortunately, the database version still hasn't been corrected. All the accented letters appear wrong, for instance é appears as i. I put a correction in the Altan thread (I don't think Altan ever recorded this song)and wrote to Dick Greenhaus about it, but the DT remains inaccurate.
