Subject: Shocking Realization: Tom Paxton RULES!
From: GUEST,Mbo_at_ECU

Yesterday, after getting mad at my sister for stealing my room and busting up a great songwriting mood, I took off to Circuit City to "BE WITH MUSIC" and while haphazardly looking in the miniscule "folk" bin, I came across Tom Paxton's greatest hits. WOOHA! Why didn't you folks tell me he was this great before? Now I've GOT to learn all 26 songs on the album! I wonder if my fellow ECU students think me strage when I was going around singing "We're going to the zoo zoo zoo....."!

--Mbo (BTW can anyone tell me WHY "Bottle of Wine" sounds so darn familiar to me?)

" Bottle of Wine" was a big AM radio hit back in the late sixties I believe, but not the Paxton version. I can't remember the groups name, but it did become quite an anthem for tipplers.

Ya know Meebo, if you'd go back and look at all the times we have talked about Paxton and the general great feelings that everyone around here has for him as a folk artist and songwriter extraordinaire and READ what people say EVERTIME his name is mentioned, instead of skipping past it so you can get in a plug for the "Flaming Genital Lollipop Suckers" or whatever, you'd have already purchased a shitload of Paxton material. No one IMHO writes such a broad base of songs from beautiful, tear jerking, ballads to humorous and satirical pieces with such style. Nice guy too.

HEY! I said he ruled, but I didn't say he was as good as ELO & Jeff Lynne...only Spider Tom holds that honor! **BG** Now, it's time to assimilate Tom into my musical consciousness...hmmm...Paxton-ish arrangements of ELO songs...cool idea Mbo! It said "Bottle of Wine" was done by "The Fireballs" but that didn't seem to help!

Spaw, How can you add - nice guy too - as an afterthought??? ;-)

Sure he's a great songwriter,
Sure he's a great entertainer and all those other things people say about him.
But "I THINK" that the NICE GUY THING is first and foremost.

Bert.

If I remember right, the hit recording of "Bottle of Wine" that I know (bottle of wine, fruit of the vine, when you let me get sober, etc.) was by The Fireballs. Jimmy Gilmer and The Fireballs had a big hit with "Sugar Shack".

Dear Bertie Boy,

Yeah, you're right Bert. Please note the date and time so you can recall the one time that you were. They say the CRS can be slowed by making and reviewing notes.

Actually, I was so caught up in chastizing the lad that I wanted to point out Paxton's great abilities rather than his peronality, which is the real thing that sets him far and above the "Flaming Genital Lollipop Suckers." I was really trying (not to successfully I might add) to point out to Meebo the importance of listening to some of the more knowledgable folks, unlike you and I, rather than hyping something else. There is a time to listen. I don;t think anyone else around has such wide tastes as Meebs, but its nice to humor the old folks now and then.

... here's the link you might wanna check, and by the way; I play a few of Tom's songs, but one that amazes everytime is "I Can't Help but Wonder Where I'm Bound" - I play this almost always to audinces who don't know the song, and before I'm halfway through they're singin' along! It's one of those songs that hits ya first time, every time, and makes ya have to sing along!

In a survey done a couple of years ago for a magazine who's name I forget (Mighta been "Acoustic Songwriter") They listed the most widely admired song writers in the folk style. No question who came first, but of course Tom was second. A parcel of Canucks came in 3,4,5. (believe Phil Ochs was 6th. A Jimmy Dean sausage for the answer to 3,4, and 5.

Strewth!

I've just been to the CDNow listing of Paxton albums. I thought I had a pretty complete collection, but there's a dozen or more I've never heard!

The old Marbles card's gonna take a pasting.

Better late than never, Mbo - welcome to the Paxton appreciation society.

They had a lot of stuff my John Prine, but I didn't know what he was like, or which albums were best, so I didn't get any of him.
