recently found out that 'Eric sings von Schmidt' (containing his song 'acne') has been reissued on CD by (japanese) PVINE CD 5305 and can be purchased from Elderly ($24.50 !!!)

BTW: The song - as Eric sings it on his record - consists of a further verse:

Now we walk alone, now we walk alone, me, God and acne.

Bert, you tune a toaster GEBBDBCAA: glowing element, bread baked dark brown, crumbs all around. Hope that helps.

I'm pretty sure it's been proven that while touching yer face and such can 'contribute', the real cause of acne is the same thing that causes male pattern baldness... an excess of testosterone...

Hormone therapy can help... or you can just accept that yer a horny, spotty balding bastard like me and move on!!
LOL!!!!!

Stefan, I think you may have put your finger on it. The folks I knew who sang it used to listed to von Schmidt a lot so I'd gesss he was the source. I thought they were singin "The Acne Blues" prior to 1964 though.

Good site, by the way. Makes me think I should have listened to von Schmidt; I never did.

don't know if that's the one cited above, but there's a song called 'acne' written and performed by Eric von Schmidt on his album 'Eric sings von Schmidt' (Prestige 7384); can also be heared on the sampler 'Take A Trip With Me' (Prestige 7539); both out of print. For more info about Eric von Schmidt have a look at the website I put together at http://www.wirz.de/music/vonschm.htm ACHTUNG: Takes some time to load !!!

Here's a bit of an old song you all might know. I last heard it played nearly forty years ago and never bothered to learn it but it went something like this:

The progression is the slow C A- F G Doo Wop progression.

You said that you'd ask me,
You said that you'd ask me,
To the high school prom,

You din't ask me,
Found out I had acne,
Oh darlin you know,
God put it there.

I don't know whether it was actually recorded by someone or was just made up by people I was hanging around with at the time. Does it sound familiar to anyone?

Sophoclese, you said 'you could practice appliance repair as that will get into more women's apartments.' Dammit NOW you tell me. Should have done that years ago.

I'll give it a try. Might get a few funny looks taking a washing machine along to a song circle, but it won't sound any worse than a bodhran.

Or maybe a toaster! any one know how to tune a toaster?

Bert.

Does anyone know who wrote "Zits wonderful, Zits marvelious, that you should care for me" ?? And does it qualify as a folk song ???

SINSULL replies in part(highly edited):"...a particularly nasty eruption." I'd say that this is an apt discription of this thread in general. Just MHO. Not trying to bring anything to a boil. Squeezes to my Mudcat palz.

Mbo, St. Ives Apricot Scrub daily applied vigorously with a washcloth or net scrungy.(Hard to be manly with a pink net scrungy but...)

Please don't ever mention it again. It will interfere with my enjoyment of Hearme.

I have ugly visions of you contorting yourself behind the microphone trying to reach a particularly nasty eruption.

I have no doubt that there is. However.

I presume with the band name on your shoulders, you would have to either lie down or turn your back to the audience.
Neither of which I would particularly recommend as a sure-fire tactic of meeting the future mother of your children. (God help us)

Sorry for stealing your light, Praise.

Well, just imagine if the gut from Sublime had zits messing up the band name tatooed on his shoulders? Not a babe-getting thing! And yes there is such a thing as acoustic folk punk ska.

What are 'horrible mores'?
And what relation to they bear to Folk music?

Better clear up the acne if you wanna be a babe magnet. And I've never seen a virile mandolin player. Ever. (Just kidding, of course.)

Personal hygiene is important, as Mbo has probably found out by now.
Along with the dreaded spotty pus we have also the 'missing teeth' brigade. These are normally bodhrán players, although box, and curiously enough, Amish pitchfork nose intonation attenuator players, often fit into this category.

Folk musicians tend to have more sweat and saliva drooling from their bodies, as Mbo has attested to elsewhere in this document. All this salty stuff has two purposes. One is to get under your skin and cause zits, the other is to send out STRONG 'I am available to the opposite/same sex'(Delete where applicable) signals.

As I prove time after time. Having just come back from a little party some friends and I organized where I had sex with selected teenagers of my choice.

Don't worry Sir Arthur. Just give them that 'I am virile' look over the top of your mandolin, and the chicks will be fighting like little cats, getting all hot in the underpants, over the privilege of a menàge a trois with you and your F-holes.

Love is just around the corner.....

Along with a lot of the rest of us, a substantial part of my motivation for learning guitar and folksinging, back in the late Jurassic, was in the hope it would be a babe magnet.

More's the pity, the net result was in the other direction. Even if I got her attention, I found that when I had my arms around the guitar I didn't have my arms around the girl!

don;t know MBO, maybe something to that arguement, but the issue of babe magnet? Well, maybe if Mr Conan Doyle can resolve the accuracy issue, the acne will cure, and the babes will flock to him!

I'd try the Bill Monroe idea. Even if it doesn;t work, you can't go wrng with ol' Bill.

SACaD, talent IS an aphrodisiac, and someday I'll show you someone with talent and you can see how the babes fall for her, in the meantimne you could practice appliance repair as that will get into more women's apartments.

Since guitar & mandolin strings, as well as tin whistle are all made of metal, it would seem right that the combination of the oxide from the metal, as well as sweat and grime that accidentally get on the face by inadverdant touching, can cause clogged pores, resulting in blackheads, rashes, acne, and general bad complexion. The cure? Was your hands! My classical guitar teacher told me that washing your hands before and after musical performance will not only be beneficial to the strings and finish of the instrument, but to your skin as well. But don't overdo it...too much water softens callouses on the fingers, resulting in a not-so-good sound when playing.

Perhaps you're right Jed.

Everything I've learned up to now, has been from listening to Mudcat Radio.

Perhaps I should invest in a few Bill Monroe albums.

If talent is an aphrodisiac, where are the babes?...That's what I want to know!

It is a well known scientific fact that folk music heals acne, as well as strengthens the character and sweetens the breath. You must be doing it wrong!!

I've noticed that a lot of Folk musicians have bad complexions and wondered if there was any medical or scientific correlation to this phenomena?

Since taking up banjo, penny whistle, and mandolin, I seem to be breaking out all over, and am frustrated by it. I thought I was well past this point.

Any suggestions or thoughts?
