There's a delightful recording of it on Stephen Wade's excellent CD 'Dancing in the Parlour' County CO CD 2721: Stephen Wade, banjo;Alan Jabbour, fiddle; and Nancy Fly, accordian.

I just remembered that Holy Modal Rounders do a version on their recent CD: 'Too Much Fun' Rounder CD 3163, but it is given their inimitably bizarre treatment.

Keep an eye out for a new CD by Dublin singer/collector, Frank Harte, a double album is on its way quite soon. Most of you know of Frank, he is probably the foremost collector of Napoleonic ballads about today.I have heard that the CD will be available soon. ( accompanied by Donal Lunny) P.S. no I'm not doing P.R.

Hello--- At the Nordic Roots Festival in Minneapolis, Minnesota, this year, I saw Aly Bain and Ale Möller play Bonapartes Retreat... I WISH I had a recording of that. They did record all the performances, so maybe... Not very helpful, was I? Sorry:)

Aly Bain, with others equally great performers (like Jerry Douglas), has a version on the Transatlantic Sessions 2. Iona Records, www.lismor.co.uk

And what's mighty keen about Aly playing is that he uses the old style tuning for it. (ADAD)

ta for all the replies there may be more coming of course but in the meantime-Aly Bain and Phil Cunningham did a concert in Alnwick Northumberland and played a set comprising Midnight on the Water and The Lakes of Pontchartrain-I wish I had a recording of that now! Ben

Mark O'Connor medleys Midnight on the Water with Bonaparte's Retreat on his Midnight on the Water disc Chieftains do a version on a disc that I think is named Bonaparte's Retreat. I've heard tell that Glenn Campbell wrote lyrics to BR and recorded it. Doc Watson recorded a version somewhere along the line. Somebody gave him credit for mixing Little Egypt in with the tune. George Hagerty of Vermont has a delightful string band version of it on his "Just Friends" CD.

The lyrics to Bonaparte's Retreat were written by the recently deceased Pee Wee King. Do a forum search (make sure to separate Pee Wee, not PeeWee) and you'll find a lot about him AND Bonaparte's Retreat. Here's one from Dec 97 Dick was explaining how to get the lyrics from the database. Some things never change. As to recordings, sometimes the oldies are the goodies. Check out the Skillet Lickers. Can't get much better than that.
