I didn't even need to be heckled tonight, I sabotaged my own efforts at singing the Dalesman's Litany by starting a fire in my ash tray. Other than that, I did:

New South Wales
Hush Hush Time to be Sleeping
Jock Stewart
Blackleg Miners
Kelly The Boy From Kilane
The Boys Of The Old Brigade
Blood Red Roses
Paddy West

I was asked to post the lyrics to what I called Hush Hush but I have found it in the DT as SMILE IN YOUR SLEEP

The last verse in the DT is a new verse to me but I have a verse that would be the 3rd verse that is not in the DT:

We stood heads bowed in prayer
While ?fatters? laid our cottages bare
And the flames fired the clear mountain air
And many were dead by the morning.

Jon, I request an encore of that one since I missed it last night.

Here is a link that has the DT's three verses (slightly different words in some places) and your verse as the second verse. Your word in question appears to be "battles."

The above link was found at Lesley's site which is mentioned in this Mudcat Forum Thread.

Jon, actually in the thread linked in Mary in Kentucky's post, is a post from Big Mick in which he states "By the way, in the third verse, second line, the second word should be "factors" not "battles". The Factor was the man who carried out the Lord's wishes, and usually handled the financial end of things. In the movie "Rob Roy" this man that was taken to the Island and killed by Macgregor's wife. In most cases they were not well liked."

This seems logical and fits with you "fatters" as well.

Thanks Ivan, that makes more sense - and also means my hearing was not quite as bad as I thought it must have been :-)

Harpgirl, I for one apologise if we missed to invite you to sing (and I most certainly would have loved to here you sing and or play and I really enjoy hearing you) and I can't remember at what point you came in but in defense of Mbo, there was a point where he was the only one willing to sing. There were only 3 of us with mikes, the other 2 wanting to or needing to keep quiet ( In my case, I did start to sing again a little later but was worrying about disturbing the neighbours at that point) and Mbo contributed greatly towards keeping the session alive.

We all do try to take turns and if the next slot comes up and no one takes it, anyone with a mic jumps in. As Jon said, sometimes Mbo has jumped in simply because no one else could or was ready to; all you have to do is speak up.

It also helps if people who have mics and want to use them, will change their name in there to reflect that as in "Mbo got sound" or Alison w/ mic."

I sang Hobo's Lullaby; the Prairie Lullaby; and read my granddad's poem "Salt Ground Eight."

*have not been in HearMe for several sessions now because of work pressures getting ready for a crafts show*

...it isn't easy, is it?...how DO you know when to 'wait' and when to just sing?...If only a couple of people are prepared to sing, should they just 'do it'?...I am afraid, though, I do see harpgirl's point--too much of any one person can be a bit overwhelming. And even when there are 6 or 7 or more 'willing' to sing, they are sometimes passed over if they don't 'push'...

I have, on several sessions 3-4 weeks ago, felt like I was being 'not noticed', for want of a better phrase. I am totally aware that I could have 'stood up and waved my hand' if I really wanted to contribute, but, as in real sessions sitting in the same room, there are those who are more shy and reticent...and those who seem more ummm....'anxious' to fill any dead air with themselves! And it is only partially related to talent & competence...some of the best local musicians I know are quiet background folk who really hate 'competitive' song sessions, where several folk compete in the timing to get THEIR next offering out.

I really HATE saying these things, because in HearMe, there is no easy visual way to read the room and offer turns in a smooth and simple way. People came in and go out, and there is no seating pattern to go by....but, I'm sorry, it DOES happen that patterns develop where several sincere, honest, talented(usually)people end up being the entire show...sometime just by default because they are there and ready and always have nice stuff the offer....and sometimes because the 'shy' bunch just gives up and decides it is too much work to get a song in edgewise!...and there is NO one who has not seen this happen!!! We just have differing ways of dealing with it...some go away, some just shrug and sing more!

I sure wish it were easier, because this is an amazing way to share music around the world and hear folk we never would hear any other way. I even KNOW some musicians who I'd love to get into this, but I am certain they would not cope with the system. Me? Oh, I'll be in sometimes..I'll speak my piece, then stop and sing an occasional song. The music is too much fun to stomp off in a huff, just because I don't see it going exactly to my specs...but, like harpgirl, I may decide it just ain't working on night 'X', and slip out.

IDEA: since HearMe doesn't depend on just the usual link..(any two or three people who wish can call each other and trade songs!)...how about some of those sessions being private? And the 'official' ones being less often with more of a moderator like we started out? And, maybe as more folk get tuned in to the software and we have a bigger crowd, this issue will solve itself......

I don't know what the answers are Bill but I have always hoped that people will take it in turns trying to play "moderator". I hate doing that bit but have tried on occasions, also, there have been times during long periods of silence where I have felt obliged to try and do something just to have someone doing something.

It is pretty well impossible to know how other people are feeling - wouldn't it be nice to be able to see faces and facial expressions? and one can only hope that people can understand those difficulties.

One problem is that it is difficult to know who is prepared to sing and who isn't and we are getting an increasing number of people who come in just to listen for a while so perhaps the mic/no mic suggestion kat made would help everybody know who wants to "perform" and who doesn't. Beyond that, I can only think that we have to try to work in strict rotation, bringing people who join in later as and when possible and IMO, the easies way to do this is for people to remember they were after another person and have to be ready and willing to take that slot or pass onto the next person and wait till it comes round again. It is to much ike hard work for somebody to maintain a list.

Anyway, just my thoughts. The Hearme link may currently use my site but the only time I would interfere with what happens there (I would feel obliged to) is in cases of really abusive behaviour which I don't believe will ever happen amongst our company, and beyond that, it is up to everybody who wants to use to to find a method that works.

Also, while Hearme is on my site, I can provide additional rooms or change some features if anyboy requires.

Jon

Jon you have been a shining example of a good host, as has Alison, when she jumps in. There's never been a designated moderator, but perhaps there should be. I've jumped in just because several people would post "someone sing" and nobody did, so I tried to round 'em up & head 'em out.

When we first started it, someone always tried being the host, including JAB, for a few weeks there, and we tried making lists but the person doing that wound up hvaing to do a lot of work as Jon says.

Maybe one person should offer to moderate and put that after their name. The other thing which may make it work is for people to take a number when they come in; then go down the list, with the first ones in, waiting for their next turn up as others sign in? Dunno, it is hard when you cannot see everyone. I do think Jon, Alison, JAB, and others have done a fine job of encouraging the *shy* ones and we all usually try to greet each person as they come in. The ones who just come to listen are always very encouraging to everyone, too, from what I have seen.

yep..I agree with kat..Jon HAS been a fine 'host' when that position need to be filled, as have Alison and a couple others..in a perfect world, we would NOT need a 'list' or specific rotation, but..*shrug*...that's sort of what we do here in our live Open Sing. Sometimes we have groups at a private gathering where we can just wing it, 'Hootenanny' style, but in a public forum, there seems to be some need for rules

Sorry I missed it yesterday (well, it's still Monday evening here). I went to Oahu (That's Hawaiian for "The Crowded Island") for a part work/part fun weekend. I saw a concert by a slack-key guitarist named Dennis Kamakahe who also plays a mean electric. He's been touring on the Mainland with his son, David, who is an awesome ukulele player. If you're looking for a fantastic evening of traditional and contemporary Hawaiian music (with some good old country/rock as well), check them out if they're in your area. And while you guys were singing, I was going eye to eye with queen angels, Moorish idols, parrotfish, and a baby moray eel.

But to uncreep, I agree that the kind of "personnel management" that is often difficult in a song circle becomes nearly impossible when you can't see the other people. In general, I think everybody does a superb job and I've enjoyed the sessions tremendously. I think the suggestions that have been made are good ones. I do like it when somebody takes on the role of greeter/moderator, as kat and Jon have done in the past. I'll be happy to volunteer to do so next time I'm on -- with the understanding that it's a rotating position!

Also, before I hit the F9 key I try to do two things. (Three, if you count figuring out what I'm going to sing and whether I remember the words!) Step One, I look through the list of participants to see if there's anyone who hasn't sung or played something since the last time I did. If so, then Step Two: I wait...then wait some more. Sometimes, if it seems appropriate, I'll offer an invitation. I think there are some people for whom HearMe offers a chance to do something they might not have the courage to do with other people in the same room. And having been in that situation in times past, I would like to give those "shy persons" as much space and encouragement as possible.

Okay, enough said. I'll be in Colorado next week, but I'll try to be back the following week. And you DownUnders, send me a message if you want to try a session on a weeknight, and I'll stay up late and join you.

Aloha,
Mark

Mark! I think it was Kamakahe I got to see on tour in Rhode Island several years ago, called "Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar Masters", one of the very first CD's I ever bought...gorgeous music. Did you play kissy-face with any of those idols or angels?**BG**

I think we all try to look over the list and see if someone is waiting or ask if they'd like to take a turn. I'd hate to see it become a rigid thing with the number suggestion, though. Maybe we need to designate what kind of session we'd like it to be when one of us sets up the thread or is moderator. We used to try to designate a theme at times. There've been some nights where it has really turned into a neat "practise-try out new songs/poems/stories" giving people a chance to do so with valuable feedback.

Have fun in Colorado, Mark.

Everything to moderation! I have been laying low from hearme for awhile simply because I have gotten too far behind in the other parts of my life. Work, music, volunteering, etc. It's too easy and too adicting. Instead I've been trying to get out in the real world. Even went to a live sing at the Washington Folk Fest and sang a song (Sailors Way) Saturday night. In comparison, Hearme is great, but its no substitute.

Anyway, I agree with Mark. The most rewarding experiences I have had on Hearme is when the sessions seemed more like a front porch music session, than song circle. Early on, we chatted, exchanged thoughts, and got feedback. I got to "know" kat, alison, MBO, Bill D, Jon, and some of the other regulars. I want feedback. That is how I improve. The last time I was on, I found out that I sing "My Tommy's Gone to Hilo" as "My Tummy's gone and I'm going to". Sounds like I've been on a diet or something. Soooo, I'm practicing my enunciation!

So I'm on less due to time constraints, but even if I had the time I'd probably vote for quality over quantity and more interaction during the hearme sessions.

I really enjoyed the autoharp evening. Maybe we can have another. A banjo night would be fun. Another thought I've had is to exchange styles for common songs. For example, I sing Haul Away Joe my own particular way. Alison sings it differently. Others may also sing it a new way, with a different lyric or tune. The Cuckoo is another song that has many variations.

Hearme is something new. With its synchronized chat it adds a new dimension. Let's experiment, be creative, and explore how it can be used. Let's not just try to make it fit the old molds of communication.

JAB

Coming out of my hole for a brief second.

I am however uncomfortable and offended by some of the comments which are showing up on the threads which seem to attack certain folks..THIS should not be happening...IF you don't like what you are hearing on Hearme leave..If you want to sing announce the fact hit F9 and go for it...KGH

I am one of the shy ones. I enjoy Hearme very much and am truly thankful for the ones that jump in and sing instead of just letting Hearme be in silence.

I have found that people are asked if they want to sing, and a lot of people decline the invitation,or say maybe later or something. I am one that most times will decline, but when I feel comfortable to sing or play my harp or dulcimer the reception I get is fantastic. Feeling uncomfortable has nothing to do with who is on Hearme or whether I am given a chance, it is always because I am shy. Sometimes I ask if I can sing and am never turned down. If a shy person can ask anyone can.

Sometimes it is fun and enjoyable to just sit and listen to some of the really talented ones. I know of several I could just sit and listen to all night.

A suggestion was made that when you go into Hearme if you don't want to do anything but listen you can change how you sign on. I some times have signed on as "just listening" as have many others. If you want to sing or something put "mic" after your name. I quite honestly don't see what the problem is as I have always been treated very politely and encourged 100%. Mbo, Dave, Jon, & Callie thanks for the great entertainment last night.

keltcgrasshoppper:

Yes, kelt. If people would only behave like those in the room were really sitting in front of them then I think it would be much much better. I have labeled the supposedly witty comments Keyboard Tourette's Syndrome (KTS). It occurs both in the threads and in hearme, and I find it to be a real pain.

One additional suggestion is that if a singer wants feedback on their song, or how to improve they should mention it. If I'm practicing a song before I try it out in a 3-D venue for example I would ask for comments/suggestions. Otherwise, unless you know the person, treat them with the respect they deserve. If you want to be smart send a private comment via the personal messages or ICQ.

JAB

Likewise, if someone is singing too much, or not enough, or is exhibiting immature behavior a deluge of private messages should correct the problem. This takes it out of the public attack/defense escalation.

Hello workers of the world. I will be instituting some new guidelines on HearMe, as of NOW.

--Rule #1--Upon entering, you will be given a numeric designation. The numbers will be assigned on a "who came first" basis. If you enter the room first, then you will be number 1. If you were the fifth person to come in, you are number 5. The numbers will be called in order, when your number is up, you must sing within 30 seconds of your name being called, otherwise, your turn will be forfeir and will move to the next number.

--Rule #2--Each person may sing up to, but not exceeding, 5 songs within a given session.

--Rule #3--The textchat will be used for honest, candid, and frank reviews of the music performed. There will be no extraneous material in the textchat. Any one violing this rule will be forcibly dumped from the room. This is a chatroom after all, and therefor chat has no place.

--Rule #4--Each person's repetoire must not exceed 12 songs. Anyone found to have performed more than 12 different songs over a given course of time will be forcibly dumped from the room.

--Rule #5--HearMe is , contrary to popular opinion, not a place for entertainment. It is a tool to practice music on live humans before you perform in realtime public. The questions will remain academic in nature, and the replies will be objective and terse.

--Rule #6--If it seems that a certain person has performed more over the course of time than others, this will not be attributed to popularity, but to selfishness and self-promotion.

--Rule #7--Any talking over the microphone line is prohibited. Only live music will be played. Anyone found to be using tapes, CDs, minidisk, 8-tracks, phonograph records or answering machines will be forcible dumped from the room.

Thank you for accepting my new rules. Follow them, and we will unite the world. Disobey, and you will face my Red Army.

Sincerely,

V.I. Lenin

LOL!!!!! Lenin, my friend, I think you have a gift. Not since Swift have I seen such timely and humurous satire! By all means, let us legislate and regularise Hearme. This current state of balanced chaos is dangerously anarchistic! LOL!

Seriously folks, I find that I cannot see how hearme could be much improved. I love hearme! The folks are kind and encouraging, the sessions varied and fun. Sure, there are those more likely to jump in when no one else is performing, but this keeps the session going. Often there are only two or three people with mics, and the session takes on the aspect of a private concert....something I rather enjoy. But these people are also very gracious about inviting others to perform. Mbo, for example, has a wide and enjoyable repetoire, and is a very enthusiastic performer- he is also a very enthusiastic audience, and has encouraged myself, and others, to perform more. If someone finds that they'd like to perform more, all that is needed is a slight cue, a comment about knowing a nice song, or some fiddling with the f9 key, and the wonderfl folks on hearme - people like KGH and Dan, DaveO, Dave TAM, Mbo, Kat, JAB, Jon - will be all over themselves coaxing out a song or two. Singing, sharing, music and smart aleck kidding around....sounds a lot like the 'Cat to me.

Pax,
Ceitagh

Ye liked it, eh? Ol' Vlad was me, playing the fool. All this talk of rules and numbers and academics on HearMe was making me surly. Blame it on my empty stomach!

it seems to me that Lenin...ummm Mbo.. makes a very good point *grin*...it is not lots of extra rules we need, but simply an awareness of our differences and the good will to make it as open and easy as possible.....sometimes just 'airing' the various concerns is all it takes, rather than allowing things to fester.

I have made some changes to my Hearme entry page to make it possible for people to create their own "privte" rooms if they wish.

If 2 or more people agree on a room name and use the create room option, a room that is unique to my domain will be opened for use. Note that my domain is Tripod.co.uk so it is always possible that other Tripod users could be using Hearme and pick on the same room name and in that case, you and them would all end up in a common room.

I have also decided to make 4 of the Hearme Internet Wide channels accessible but be warned that there are some very unpleasant people who visit these rooms.

Jon

About the only thing that's bugged me is when I've said I'm going to do a song, others have said "go ahead," and someone jumped in ahead of me and cut me off. I put this down to exhuberance. Maybe if I were in a foul mood, I'd get mad about it, but it's hard to be in a foul mood in HearMe. Anyway, having people chomping at the bit to do a song is preferable than "Who's turn is it? Anyone want to sing? Please?"

And for my part, I'd love to hear constructive criticism. Not merely "nice song," but "I liked the song, but you were a bit off-key on some of the high notes." I'm my own worst critic, and no one who's honest will be harder on me than me. (And I'm not in a good position to judge.)
