Subject: No Hawaii hurricane this time around From: Mark Cohen Date: 30 Jul 00 - 11:52 PM Those of you with family or friends in Hawaii will be glad to know that as of 5PM Hawaii time today (11PM Eastern; 0300 7/31 GMT, I think) the tropical storm warning for Hawaii has been canceled, as Daniel was nice enough to turn north. On the Hamakua (northeast) coast of the Big Island, where I live, we're supposed to get 30-40 mph winds and 2-3 inches of rain sometime tonight. That I can handle. Should be some awesome surf here for the next couple of days... Aloha, Mark |

Subject: RE: No Hawaii hurricane this time around From: bbelle Date: 31 Jul 00 - 01:12 AM Mark ... glad to hear you're safe. I'm a survivor of many hurricanes, 2 volcanic eruptions, 2 earthquakes ... and I gots lots of concern for you who choose to live on islands. (I turned down a lucrative job offer in Juneau because I couldn't drive on and off the island, at a whim.) moonchild |

Subject: RE: No Hawaii hurricane this time around From: Mrrzy Date: 31 Jul 00 - 09:54 AM This morning's NPR (at about 8:30 Eastern) said that the warning was back up, for Maui not Hawaii island, for possible the worst storm to hit the island in its history... Were they being alarmist or has Daniel changed course AGAIN? I hope the former! I was chased out of my NC vacation last year by Floyd, and I fled singing Mighty Day quite loudly. Any other good hurricane songs? |

Subject: RE: No Hawaii hurricane this time around From: Morticia Date: 31 Jul 00 - 03:20 PM I guessed things were okay when I got a bunch of e-mail from my aunt ( who lives in Pearl City) as she had said not to expect anything for a little while..... |

Subject: RE: No Hawaii hurricane this time around From: wysiwyg Date: 31 Jul 00 - 03:45 PM Mark, I appreciate this more than you know. My son is at the Navy base there. Since I work for Red Cross, all I ever get are the worst-case scenarios as preparedness activities mount in advance, in case there IS a disaster. (I don't know how many of you know this, but Red Cross gears up within a wide area way ahead of time, so that people and materials are in place ahead of time, whenever possible. Lots of mobilizing.) ~Susan |

Subject: RE: No Hawaii hurricane this time around From: Mark Cohen Date: 31 Jul 00 - 10:40 PM Well, I was partly premature. Daniel definitely bypassed the Big Island, but Maui and the rest of the chain, including Oahu, still may get something. Last I heard was that it was supposed to get to Maui this afternoon (it's now 4:30PM Hawaii time, and I'm finished seeing patients early so I have the radio on, haven't heard anything yet). The good news is that unlike Iniki this storm is no longer a hurricane, the bad news is that it apparently picked up some strength last night and turned more west than north. If you look at a map, you'll see that the Hawaiian chain stretches NW to SE; my island is the youngest and the southeasternmost. The forecasts are for winds from 30-40 mph and 2-6 inches of rain for the other islands, which is unpleasant but not disastrous. (This side of the Big Island averages more than 150 inches of rain a year, so it's all relative.) However, when you're talking about storms that stagger across the ocean like a drunken bull, and islands that are relatively tiny, the forecasts are notoriously unreliable until you're really under the gun. (Last night we were supposed to get high winds and lots of rain, and it never happened.) So, for those with friends and relatives on Maui, O'ahu, and Kaua'i, they're not out of the woods yet but at least we don't seem to be looking at a hurricane. I'll post again if there's any news. Aloha, Mark |

Subject: RE: No Hawaii hurricane this time around From: catspaw49 Date: 31 Jul 00 - 10:54 PM Glad you are safe Mark, but your comment about the size of the islands and the size of the storm is so true. We really are some tiny little insignificant pissants aren't we? But I'm glad to be one and glad you're around here too!!! Spaw |

Subject: RE: No Hawaii hurricane this time around From: Mark Cohen Date: 01 Aug 00 - 06:34 PM OK, folks, the whole state is in the clear as of yesterday afternoon. Apparently Dan'l picked up some strength, even came close to being a hurricane again, and that was good news, because it pulled him north of the islands. Those of you who are meteorologists may be able to explain that, because I sure can't. Maui County (islands of Maui, Moloka'i and Lana'i) closed their schools yesterday (7/31) but they just got a little rain. Sadly, old Dan isn't even going to help out with our drought, just a few showers here and there. So now we'll just have to go back to watching the volcano erupt. Thanks for the good wishes, everybody. And let's all pray that Mbo and his friends in North Carolina and environs don't get hit with a repeat of last year's terrible hurricanes. Aloha, Mark |

Subject: RE: No Hawaii hurricane this time around From: Little Neophyte Date: 01 Aug 00 - 09:22 PM Well if anyone wants a crash course on hurricanes they should read the book I am halfway through right now called Isaac's Storm by Erik Larson. It is about a hurricane that hits Galveston, Texas at the turn of the last century. The author goes into detail about the history of meteorology and gives a good explanation of how hurricanes are formed and tracked. I highly recommend this book unless you suspect a hurricane maybe coming to your town. Then I am not sure if I would read this book. Bonnie |

Subject: RE: No Hawaii hurricane this time around From: Mark Cohen Date: 01 Aug 00 - 11:19 PM Wasn't there a song about that Galveston hurricane? Seems to me I remember Tom Rush singing it. I remember a chorus that went Wasn't that a mighty storm Wasn't that a mighty storm in the morning Wasn't that a mighty storm Blew all the people all away Or was that a different song? Ah, memory...
